Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce bury 10-year feud with Ray Allen (New York Post)

On Sunday, when Kevin Garnett got his jersey retired by the Celtics, Ray Allen was there by his side.

That’s what I focused on was the last 10 years is everything we did together — that to me is the most important.” “When I left I was so excited for my journey that I was on, but I’ve always loved these guys,” Allen said. “It’s good to see Ray Allen here.

Kevin Garnett made it okay for Celtics fans to forgive Ray Allen: 6 ... (Boston.com)

Kevin Garnett made it clear to Celtics fans during his jersey retirement that his longstanding feud with Ray Allen is officially squashed.

“The first thing I did after the press conference was come in here and look up at the rafters. At one point late in the fourth quarter, the Mavericks threw the Celtics for a loop by simply refusing to let Tatum or Rob Williams score. 4. The Celtics also played a basketball game on Sunday — they came up short against the Mavericks, who clamped up Jayson Tatum down the stretch. The Celtics did the same as they filmed his pilgrimage through the locker room. Both teams were really blitzing their main guys, and as I’ve said all year, Jayson is just as happy to see our guys feed off of him, and he makes the right play, makes the right pass. Disloyalty was the ultimate sin (just ask Kyrie Irving). By forgiving Allen, Garnett did more than just squash a beef with an old teammate — he gave a city permission to forgive a player with a complicated history. “Once he accepted me, then the people accepted me. Garnett was perfectly himself throughout the evening. Completely unprompted, in the middle of a different answer, Garnett pointed to Allen. On an evening the Celtics’ operations team expertly planned and produced down to the minute, the best moment was raw and pretty clearly unscripted. “Words didn’t have to be exchanged,” Allen said. Garnett also helped set the culture for Celtics fans.

Every playoff run is a chance for Tatum and Brown to cement their legacies in green. His relentless intensity created a new standard for everyone in the organization and guided Boston to a title in the Big Three’s first season together. Boston could fret a whole bunch of little mistakes along the way Sunday. Eight first-half turnovers prevented the Celtics from tearing the game open. Boston wasn’t particularly crisp in crunch time Sunday and it was enough for Luka Doncic to burn them at the finish line. Here’s what Celtics fans should hope the Jays take away from the proceedings: Both Garnett and Pierce were elite NBA talents but winning a title in Boston changed everything for them. Their only regret is likely that Boston’s Big Three hoisted just one championship and injuries conspired against the quest for more.

“I want to say something, it’s good to see Ray Allen here,” said Garnett as he, Allen and Pierce embraced with a hug at center court. Garnett, who is one of three NBA players to ever compile at least 20,000 points and 10,000 rebounds for his career, cemented his status in Celtics lore by obtaining that championship ring. “I would have never thought y’all loved me like this. He is simply the best.” It’s been real, man,” said Garnett in his final words to the crowd. “His selflessness and team leadership were critical to bringing a 17th banner back to Boston. He proved that nothing is impossible when you play as a team and trust each other.

Kevin Garnett's Number Retirement Proves 'Anything's Possible' (wbsm.com)

Tim Weisberg reflects on his time covering NBA Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett as the Boston Celtics raised KG's No. 5 to the rafters of TD Garden.

All I was thinking at the time was that Paul Pierce had not yet shown he could really step up to be a true captain, and how Allen was a quiet, reserved player, and that they needed a real general on the floor. Nobody got more excited for “Gino Time” at the Garden, when in a blowout, the JumboTron would show a clip from an old ‘70s episode of “American Bandstand” featuring a disco dancer in a Gino Vannelli t-shirt and the crowd – and Garnett – would explode with cheers. Something drastic needed to happen that following off-season, and it wasn’t going to be just drafting someone with the fifth overall pick in the upcoming draft – which, by the way, was the worst-case scenario for the Celtics in the draft lottery, meaning they missed out on a shot at Greg Oden and Kevin Durant. You couldn’t speak to him before a game; other players might be willing to have a chat with the media in the locker room, but not Garnett. If you saw KG in the locker room pre-game, you’d better not even get caught looking in his direction. I spent about a little over a decade covering the Boston Celtics for the Standard-Times. I began when the Celtics were at a low point, having just fired Rick Pitino a season before. He was a great player, but he was only Boston’s for a part of his Hall of Fame career, so it seemed unlikely he’d join the longer-tenured Celtics on those retired number banners.

These Great Boston Stars Could Have Their Number Retired After ... (NBC10 Boston)

Boston Celtics legend Kevin Garnett had his No. 5 retired to the rafters at TD Garden on Sunday. Garnett spent just six seasons with the C's but helped the team ...

He won an MVP, a Rookie of the Year Award, four Gold Glove awards and three World Series titles (although he barely played in 2018). Manny Ramirez (No. 24) was one of the league's top players during his Red Sox career from 2000 through his trade to the Dodgers in 2008. Two longtime Red Sox players whose numbers are worthy of retirement are pitcher Roger Clemens (No. 21) and outfielder Dwight Evans (No. 24). Clemens won three Cy Young Awards as an elite pitcher for the Red Sox from 1984 through 1996. We don't see a lot of numbers get retired in football because you always have 53 players on a roster and there are only 99 possible numbers. Evans was a three-time All-Star, won eight Gold Glove awards and helped the Red Sox reach the World Series in 1975 and 1986. His resume speaks for itself -- seven Super Bowl victories (six with New England) and many league/team records. Dustin Pedroia (No. 15) is a great candidate from recent Sox history. That said, there are exceptions, and someone like Tom Brady certainly qualifies. The recently retired Rask was one of the best goalies of his era. Patrice Bergeron is a slam dunk to have his No. 37 retired. The Bruins have enjoyed a very success period from 2004 to today. From a statistical standpoint, few goalies in team history can match what Rask accomplished. Everyone who's worthy has already received the honor.

On the day Kevin Garnett saw his No. 5 raised to the rafters at TD Garden, he officially buried his beef with Ray Allen.

"We appreciated you, man," said Pierce, who was one of eight members of the 2008 championship team in attendance. I just manifested, not only a championship, but being immortal in the ceiling, you know what I'm saying? The game was, essentially, a two-plus-hour warmup act for the main event. It was a moment that officially brought closure to a rift that opened up between them 10 years ago, when Allen chose to sign with the Miami Heat as a free agent. "Just because I moved away doesn't mean that relationship, that friendship, ends. "Yeah, that's a big one," said Philadelphia's Doc Rivers, who coached that 2008 title team, when asked about Allen being in attendance Sunday night. I was glad we could do that and people could see, 'We won with this guy in 2008, and that's what matters most.'" "Most definitely," Allen said. He admitted that, for a long time, he wasn't sure such a reunion would be possible.

And I was lucky enough to meet Kevin as a teenager and kind of know him and see him away from the court. Definite honor to be one of the greats. “You brought a sense of culture to this city that was desperately, desperately needed. Fans you guys, you got a chance to see him on the court. Garnett said doing his homework on Boston and the environment he was stepping into helped prepare him mentally for his first season in green and white. Coming off his 10th All-Star selection in 2007, he was dealt to the Celtics as the final piece of an offseason shakeup that teamed him with future Hall of Famers Pierce and Ray Allen. As agile as he was lanky, Garnett moved like a guard, creating the archetype of the power forward capable of stretching opposing defenses with his ability to shoot from the perimeter. “I’m just trying to soak it up, being honest, I’m trying to be very humble.

The incomparable Kevin Garnett (CelticsBlog)

How do you describe Kevin Garnett to someone who didn't have the privilege of watching him during his playing days? The short answer is that you can't.

Kevin Garnett literally changed the game of basketball like the Beatles changed music. You can look up his list of hardware, his championship banner, read all these praise pieces, watch all the tribute videos, and see what he meant to the game of basketball. I would love to be a fly on the wall when a new player joined the team and a veteran sat him down to explain what to expect in that locker room. How do you describe Kevin Garnett to someone who didn’t have the privilege of watching him during his playing days? Could lead the league in literally any stat you can think of but always gives the game exactly what it needs. It might be with a disarming smile, or a signature laugh, or just the way they treat everyone as if they are the most important person in the world in that moment.

After several luminaries were introduced and the current Celtics took seats on the court, Pierce came out holding the 2007-08 NBA championship trophy before being followed by many of his teammates. “This is incredible, man,” he said. And on Sunday, with tears streaming down his cheeks and his daughters Kapri and Kavalli by his side, Garnett tugged at a slim, black rope and raised his No. 5 to the TD Garden rafters. “What more could be said about a person that hasn’t already been said?” Pierce said during a brief speech.
