Martic rallies past Raducanu to reach Indian Wells Round of 16 (unknown)

Former Top 15 player Petra Martic came back from a break down in the final set to outlast reigning US Open champion Emma Raducanu at the BNP Paribas Open.

There were no breaks of serve at all in the second set, but from 4-4 in the tiebreak, Samsonova reeled off three straight points to triumph. Martic went up an early 2-0 break in the third set, but Raducanu won five of the next seven games to serve for the match at 5-4. World No.32 Samsonova won her first Hologic WTA Tour singles title last year on the grass courts of Berlin, when she was still ranked outside of the Top 100. Martic saved a pivotal break point with a winning volley en route to a hold for 5-4, and she hit another amazing volley to reach double set point in the following game. But Raducanu saved her best for the tiebreak, firing a dazzling series of passes and down-the-line winners to collect the one-set lead after just over an hour. And then, the same thing in the third.

Peers and Polasek surged to the first set but then fell away as they were constantly put under pressure on serve. El Salvadorian Arevalo and Dutchman Rojer came into the match having lost just once in their past three tournaments. The Americans’ serving game was on fire throughout in the 6-3, 6-7(5), 10-7 victory.

2015 champion Simona Halep earned her second Top 20 win of the season, defeating birthday girl Coco Gauff in the third round of the BNP Paribas Open.

So [I'm] starting the season a little bit here for me." So I think it will be a really tough match, but also it's great to have a match against a top player that I'm playing for the first time. She tries to play more aggressive so she has everything that you need to have for a top player. I'm happy with how I played and my performance." It was a little bit windy out there so I was trying to get used to the wind, stepping one step forward and taking the match in my hand. With Gauff serving at 4-5, Halep earned triple-match point with two phenomenal forehand passing winners and converted on her third to break for the win. Up next for Halep: It's an all-Romanian derby in the Round of 16, as the two highest-ranked Romanians will face off when Halep faces Cirstea, who came back to defeat Anna Kalinskaya 5-7, 6-1, 6-0. In addition to her win over No.17 Gauff, Halep also defeated Ons Jabeur en route to the semifinals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in February. "I'm not scared about the wind," Halep said. I think I was making the right decisions, just not executing them." Halep secured the 6-3 opening set after 38 minutes, but Gauff was not without her chances. Tale of the match: On Sunday night, Halep, who won here in 2015, proved the more experienced player in the wind.

The ugly experience of Serena and Venus Williams in the tournament years ago "went into my head," Naomi Osaka told fans.

It reminded me how far the sport has come, and how far I’ve come, too. Richard Williams said at the time that he was called the n-word. But her comments showed that the Williams sisters’ experience in the tournament in 2001 lingers. Her answer wasn’t definitive and, when Serena stepped onto the court to play Kim Clijsters in the final, the crowd got nasty. Unseeded in Indian Wells, Osaka has dropped from No. 1 in the world to 78th. She also missed Wimbledon but returned for the Tokyo Olympics, where, playing for Japan, she faced enormous pressure and lost in the third round.
