Draymond Green's injury seemingly knocked him out of Defensive ... (CBSSports.com)

When Draymond Green played his last game, he was well on his way to locking up the Defensive Player of the Year award. He'd already crossed the even-money ...

The books are betting that voters will view Adebayo's 50-something games played as enough to win the award and Green's 40-something as not enough. That puts him only one off of Gobert's record for a Defensive Player of the Year, yet at this moment, he has the second highest-odds at Caesars Sportsbook (+175). Green has missed only nine more games to this point, but Caesars hardly considers him a viable candidate. Where this gets tricky is that the reality of the voting process is that the award tends to be an uncertain mix of both. Here are the six that are currently ahead of Green: If we are being absolutely technical, the most valuable defender this season has probably been Jackson or Bridges. Neither are as valuable while on the floor as Green or Gobert, but by virtue of being on the court more often, they've likely provided more overall defensive value. The margin in a possible Green victory in 2022 might not be that much bigger. He lost the 2015 Defensive Player of the Year award to Kawhi Leonard despite playing 15 more games. The award, after all, is titled Defensive Player of the Year, not Most Valuable Defender. That has given voters a fair bit of leeway to choose winners based on how well they've played while on the floor rather than weighing both the quality and quantity of their contributions. When Draymond Green played his last game, he was well on his way to locking up the Defensive Player of the Year award. But Gobert took home 89 of the 100 available first-place votes in 2018, suggesting that he had a big enough margin for error to miss more games if he'd needed to. That's less than 55 percent of the season, and let's not forget that he was averaging fewer than 30 minutes per night when he was healthy. Green is expected to return Monday against the Washington Wizards. If he does so and plays in every remaining Warriors game, he would finish with 48 games played total (47 if you don't count his seven-second stint in Klay Thompson's return). Let's assume he sits out half of Golden State's three remaining back-to-backs.

Fantasy Baseball Free Agent Tracker: Josh Donaldson, Gary ... (CBSSports.com)

Yes, there was an offseason prior to the MLB lockout -- and a frenzied one at that -- but it ended suddenly at the start of December with much work left to be ...

A three-year deal is a little surprising for a pitcher who has so far compiled a 5.39 ERA in his career, but Kikuchi showed everyone how good he could be with a 3.18 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in his first 15 starts last year. As for Kiner-Falefa, he's in line to take over as the Twins' primary shortstop, though he was already poised to play every day with the Rangers, who now have a hole to fill at third base. Because the power is mostly to his pull side, the move to Yankee Stadium doesn't change much for him, but he's in a better lineup now. An ERA in the mid-threes is more likely than a repeat of last year's, but with a comparatively low WHIP. Here's betting he'll still be well worth a mid-round pick. It's a curious move for the Nationals, who looked to be in full sell-off mode last season, and a curious move for Cruz, who's signing with a non-contender for only a guaranteed $15 million. The 31-year-old has hit .271 with a .901 OPS since joining the Yankees in 2018, homering at a better rate than Matt Olson during that stretch, but an injury last year opened the door to the Yankees replacing him. It's more of the uppercut we're used to seeing here that the flatter swings more common in the Far East, and it resulted in some long home runs in the NPB. He'll face the usual challenges, such as adapting to higher velocity, but his exceptional plate discipline should give him a leg up there. The 38-year-old goes back to where it all began, back to the organization where he won his lone Cy Young award in 2009, and to the extent that venue matters to a ground ball-generating control artist like him, this is clearly an upgrade. The rich get richer with the acquisition of the best pure hitter on the free agent market, who surprisingly didn't return to the Braves. Freeman was already in a loaded lineup and a perfectly adequate park for his skill set, but you could argue he's in an even better spot now. For more on what his ceiling could be and what his arrival does to the rest of the Dodgers lineup, check out my full-length article. The Twins weren't thought to be a serious contender for Correa's services but swooped in with a clever offer that apparently won him over. It's a big ballpark the World Series MVP heads to, but remember, his 48-homer season (2019) came in Kansas City. He has the sort of power that should translate anywhere, placing in the 83rd percentile for average exit velocity last year and the 99th percentile for maximum exit velocity.

Every NFL team's greatest free agent signing: Tom Brady, Tony ... (CBSSports.com)

Free agency, which began in the early 1990s, has blossomed into a two-week stream of big signings and team-altering acquisitions. And just when the dust begins ...

During his first full season in Seattle, Bennett helped the Seahawks win their first Super Bowl, a 43-8 romp over the Broncos. Over the next four years, Bennett made three Pro Bowls while helping Seattle make it back to the Super Bowl in 2014. The Raiders then defeated Houston, Cleveland and San Diego to reach Super Bowl XV, where they became the first wild-card team to win the Super Bowl. Plunkett took home MVP honors after throwing for 261 yards and three touchdowns against the Eagles. He led the Raiders to a second Super Bowl win in 1983. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010. After a successful first three seasons in New England that included a Super Bowl appearance, two Pro Bowls and the Offensive Rookie of the Year award, Martin inked a six-year, $36 million deal with the Jets during the 1998 offseason. He won Super Bowl MVP after leading the Rams to a win over the Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV. Warner won his second MVP in 2001 after leading the NFL in passing yards and touchdown passes. Brees spent his first five NFL seasons in San Diego, where he led the Chargers to a division title in 2004. A part-time starter in 1991, Randle broke into the starting lineup in 1992, when he recorded the first of eight consecutive double-digit sack seasons. The Cowboys' second-round pick in the 1992 draft, Smith did not catch a pass during the Cowboys' run of back-to-back championships during his first two seasons in Dallas. After sitting out the entire 1994 season, Smith earned a roster spot with the expansion Jaguars following a workout. A member of the NFL's All-2000s Team, Gates is first among tight ends in career touchdown receptions (116). He is second among tight ends in receptions (955) and yards (11,841). Gates helped the Chargers make seven playoff appearances. He was signed a few months later by the Lions, where he carved out a Hall of Fame career. A ninth-round pick in the 1985 draft, Tasker was claimed off of waivers by the Bills during the 1986 season. Championships are won in mid winter, but the seeds of those championships are sewn in the spring.
