Griffin picked up the game right where he left off against Miami and curled his way around a screen for the layup and Duke’s first basket. But Duke needed a critical bucket, and as he has all tournament, freshman forward AJ Griffin delivered with a turnaround jumper in the low post. "He was spectacular but it really starts with the energy that [Storm] Murphy gives them and the leadership that he gives them and the experience." The Blue Devils already found themselves in trouble after Cattoor took over, but things got worse when sophomore guard Jeremy Roach picked up his fourth foul on a charge at the 14:12 mark of the second half. All in all, the sharpshooter knocked down seven threes on a ridiculous 11-of-16 mark from the field, with no triple being bigger than the one he hit to give Virginia Tech a 10-point lead with just over six minutes to play. I think we had more belief in those moments even than we did in the summer and the preseason with all the expectations.” This is only the second time in his three-year career Cattoor has hit more than five threes in a game. The Hokies came to the Barclays Center with it all to play for, sitting squarely in the middle of the bubble. “I don’t watch the prognosticators and bracketologists,” head coach Mike Young said after the game. Virginia Tech dominates Duke to claim first ACC title, secure NCAA ... (The Washington Post)

The Hokies got a career-high 31 points from Hunter Cattoor to win the ACC tournament title for the first time.

Even before Saturday’s result, the Hokies had made a furious push to be included in the NCAA tournament’s field of 68 by winning 12 of 14 entering the ACC final, including victories over No. 2 seed Notre Dame in the quarterfinals and third-seeded North Carolina in the semifinals. Cattoor sank two in a row, and his third of the half followed by a three-point play tied the score at 22. Virginia Tech had been in front by as many as seven several times, including after Aluma’s layup to close a stretch in which he scored 11 of the Hokies’ 13 points. It’s a process, and at the end of the season we’ll pull it all out, and we’ll savor and we’ll congratulate and pat one another on the back. With four wins in four nights, Virginia Tech was about to become the first No. 7 seed to win the ACC tournament. That brought the Virginia Tech fans at Barclays Center to their feet as Cattoor, named the tournament’s most outstanding player, raised both arms and urged the crowd to join him in celebration.

North Carolina scored 55 points in the second half and made 39.1 percent of its threes in a 94-81 win on March 5. Virginia Tech has secured an automatic berth in the NCAA men's basketball tournament. There was never a point in the first half when Virginia Tech allowed the Blue Devils to settle in. There was a sense of urgency for Virginia Tech in this game that Duke didn't need to have. No one will remember that Duke lost in the ACC title game … if the Blue Devils make a run in the NCAA tourney.

But been a rough last week, losing to UNC at home on Coach K Day and now failing to beat bubble Virginia Tech team. The Blue Devils had issues boxing out, allowing the opposition to get 13 offensive rebounds. Virginia Tech's offense did not slow down in the second half. Not to be outdone, Keve Aluma had 11 points, six rebounds and four assists in the first half. Virginia Tech's junior guard hit the 10-point mark with 9:37 remaining in the first half. Paolo Banchero led the way for Duke's offense in defeat. Hunter Cattoor played the game of his life in the win.

Previewing the ACC Championship Game between Duke and Virginia Tech; do the Hokies score another upset or do the Blue Devils claim the title?

The interior defense hasn’t been impressive in the ACC Tournament and this team will need to improve against the bigs of Duke. The Hokies have now managed to defeat Clemson, Notre Dame, and North Carolina in consecutive days, with the most impressive of the bunch being that double-digit win against the Tar Heels. Both of these teams are great offensive units and it’ll be interesting to see the pace that game takes. Talented senior forward Justyn Mutts (10.3 ppg, 7.6 rpg) will also play a major role, especially as the Hokies try to run their interior offense. Duke sits 9th in KenPom, and 10th in the most recent NET rankings. Duke held on for wins over Syracuse and Miami the last two nights and now looks to deliver Mike Krzyzewski one final conference crown.

All that is potentially important but we would tell you this too and point to the earlier rounds as undeniable truth: basketball is a game fueled by passion and pride. They are going to give Duke everything they have because they are playing like champions. It’ll be because Duke plays with as much heart as the Hokies have shown all week. The Blue Devils do have one possibly significant advantage: Virginia Tech will have to play four games in four days. Virginia Tech makes it very difficult to defend the inside because doing so often means giving up the outside, and that team is very dangerous from outside. Duke’s small, quick team that we sometimes see is 6-10, 6-7, 6-6, 6-4 and 6-1. And after three games in four days, the threes may not be as easy either. Virginia Tech a team that is groping towards greatness. He shot 2-6 against Clemson, 3-6 against Notre Dame and 1-5 against UNC. Keve Aluma declined from 7-15 and 8-12 to 6-14. It’s worth noting that against Clemson the Hokies attempted around 15 shots around the basket, hitting 10. And as we saw Friday night, Virginia Tech has become a very capable defensive team. That took huge balls - and confidence.

ACC Tournament Final Preview: Virginia Tech against Duke (247Sports)

Duke comes in as favorites for a reason because of the size and athleticism across the entire roster. Paolo Banchero and Mark Williams are the two main post ...

Maddox is averaging 6.4 points and 1.6 rebounds per game but is coming off a 20-point game against North Carolina and is one of the best shooters in the nation, hitting 54.1% from three. Pedulla helped push Murphy forward and is an incredibly gifted playmaker and shooter in his own right, averaging 5.1 points and 1.4 assists per game while hitting 45.6% from three. Getting the gameplan that worked so well against Carolina and having multiple guys that are capable of stepping up this should be an excellent game. Alleyne is averaging 9.9 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game while hitting 37.4% from the perimeter. Hunter is averaging 9.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while hitting 40.1% from three. Baker is more of a flex four and has range that extends out to the perimeter. Keve Aluma and Justyn Mutts are the two post players and they both bring their own flair to the game. The two true guards are Trevor Keels and Jeremy Roach. Keels brings another physical presence to the floor, averaging 12 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3 assists per game. Roach is a true point guard that is averaging 8.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. Moore is averaging 13.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game and is the player that impacts the game the most from an overall perspective. Both players are capable of taking over from the perimeter with Moore hitting 40.4% from three and Griffin hitting 48.8% from behind the arc. Mark is averaging 11 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.

"The heck with that stuff," he said. He knows that flipping a switch on defense in the middle of March is nearly impossible. But it's not like the Hokies caught the Devils on a bad day. Could Duke basketball drop to a No. 3 seed, out of Greenville after ... (The Fayetteville Observer)

Duke basketball entered the ACC Tournament championship as a clear No. 2 seed, but a resounding loss could drop the Blue Devils a tad lower.

We get a couple days of good practice in order to prep for who we have. But CBS Sports’ Sunday morning projection had No. 3 seed Duke facing No. 14 seed Delaware in Pittsburgh, with the winner moving on to play either No.6 seed LSU or No. 11 seed Indiana. That projection has No. 2 Auburn and No. 3 Tennessee as the top two seeds in Greenville. ESPN’s Sunday morning bracketology had No. 2 seed Duke facing No. 15 seed Delaware in Greenville, with the winner moving on to play either No. 7 seed Michigan State or No. 10 seed Davidson. Duke's average seeding across 131 updated bracket projections is 2.40. The difference between a No. 2 and No. 3 seed could have geographic implications for Duke. The Blue Devils' best-case scenario: opening NCAA Tournament play as a No. 2 seed in Greenville, S.C., which is about a four-hour drive from Durham. Duke last played in the Greenville regional in 2017, losing to South Carolina. We've got to forget about this one. Listed as the top No. 3 seed on Sunday morning, Tennessee beat No. 2 seed Kentucky in the SEC Tournament semifinals and will play Texas A&M in the conference championship game at 1 p.m. Sunday on ESPN. Purdue, the second No. 3 seed on Sunday morning, also beat Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament semis and advanced to the title game against Iowa at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. “We’re 28-6 regular season champs. Bracket Matrix's Sunday morning update listed Gonzaga, Arizona, Kansas and Baylor as the four No. 1 seeds and Kentucky, Auburn, Villanova and Duke as the No. 2 seeds in that order. Right now, we’re 0-0. Duke entered the game as a solid No. 2 NCAA Tournament seed – with an average seeding of 2.23 across the 143 projections collected by the website Bracket Matrix – but could fall to a No. 3 seed on Sunday.
