In another last-second thriller, the Villanova Wildcats took down the Creighton Bluejays, 54-48, for their fifth Big East title in eight years.
As many should remember, the Wildcats had that same seed in 2016 and went on to win it all. “But that’s just a credit to the staff and how hard they push me and my teammates and instill confidence in me.” “Tonight, I thought we had some pretty good looks at the basket,” McDermott said. But we put it in his hands to make those plays.” At the 2:49 mark, Gillespie splashed a 3-pointer to make it 47-44 in Villanova’s favor. “I’m always prepared for the next play if we don’t score,” Wright said.
The Jays fall to 22-11 and will now wait to hear their fate and whether they will recieve a spot in the NCAA tournament on Selection Sunday.

Creighton comes into this game 22-10 on the season and 12-7 in conference play, good for the fourth seed. Creighton was lights out from the floor, shooting 52.6%. Four players scored in double figures. Or will an underdog come away with the crown for the second year in a row? At one point during the game, the Bluejays went on a 27-2 run.

And then we meet as a team and then make our plan, once we know who we're playing, we make our plan for the week. We trust in each other and have confidence in each other to make plays. Q. Collin, you've become the first player to win Scholar-Athlete, Big East Player and Tournament Most Outstanding Player in the same year. But we found a way and we've got to go back and we have work to do to prepare for those situations. And secondly, I want to say how blessed we all think we are to play here, be part of the Big East in Madison Square Garden. You guys were here, you watched it. I grabbed him on the way to the locker room and I said, you need to shoot that 100 out of 100 times. And in a couple of those plays, that was the case. We've got to lose ourselves in the process and hopefully we'll grow in that process that the results will come. They just trust me to be able to make some space and go get the ball, I guess. And from November 10th to March 10th, we're sitting here and it's a tied game with Villanova in the Big East championship team with a two and a half minutes to go. And this is our fourth time sitting up here talking to you after one of these losses in the championship game, and that's tough to swallow. And I hope we've got to the point where the Big East just isn't a Northeastern league.
The path to a 2 Seed in the East is there, Villanova just needs to take care of business and hope for some help.

Guts and glory won it out for the Wildcats as both teams struggled to make shots.
Gillespie, the two-time Big East player of the year, 2021 and 2022, was named 2022 Big East tournament MVP. Johnson noted that Gillespie was the 2022 Big East tournament MVP. The Bluejays had put the worst loss in tournament history on a No. 1 seed when it beat Providence by 27 points in the semifinals. Gillespie, noting that he was tired, was good with Justin Moore taking the ball to start those plays. This was no classic, any part of this 2022 Big East championship game, with all the shooters, tired or not, both Big East finalists, Villanova and Creighton shooting exactly like it was their third game in three days. “It’s a unique mindset, and that’s what the great ones have.”
Get a recap of the Creighton Bluejays vs. Villanova Wildcats basketball game.
Villanova: The Wildcats are tournament-tough and played in their 11th Big East final. The Bluejays got going first when Alex O’Connell hit a 3 for a 41-39 lead and waved his arms to cheering fans down the court. The Wildcats went only 8 of 32. The two-time conference player of the year hit both and was soon mobbed by teammates at midcourt to kick off the championship party. The 2016 victory, of course, was one of the most famous title games ever when Jenkins hit a buzzer-beating 3 to win it. These were not the same Bluejays who outscored top-seeded Providence 31-2 in about 10 1/2 minutes during a 27-point rout a night earlier in the semifinals. The winner was going to come down to whichever team could make a few shots in succession after a dreary start to the game. O’Connell was the worst offender; he went 0 for 5. That percentage, any percentage above 0, would have given the Bluejays the lead at halftime. Or maybe it's just the Wildcat Way forged under coach Jay Wright of shaking off nerves, bad shots, a stifling defense, whatever distraction got in their way, to always hit that next big shot and win the next big game. Gillespie missed both postseason tournaments in 2021 with a torn ligament in his left knee. But we put it in his hands to make those plays.”

That brings us right back to where we started with the Villanova Wildcats. This conference was in absolute peril when it realigned and now they are the premier college basketball tournament in the country. Anyways, back to the Wildcats. I am not completely crediting them with ‘saving’ the Big East. However, I will say that they are a huge part of the revival. The Big East has a bonafide blue blood in the Villanova Wildcats. While they were the most dominant team the Big East has ever seen for about a decade, their recent success, or lack thereof, is why I can not give Georgetown top-dog status either. Villanova has five Big East championships, tied with Syracuse and trailing only Connecticut (7) and Georgetown (8). They have a chance to move into a solo third-place position on Saturday night with a win over the Creighton Bluejays. Now credit where credit is due, they did win the National Championship in 2014, slaying Villanova in the process. In 2018, Villanova fielded quite possibly the best college basketball team of all time (that is a story for another article), and defeated every team they faced in the tournament by double digits. Longtime Big East members Pittsburgh and Syracuse would decide to abandon their conference for the ACC. This created a domino effect that left the Big East in peril. Notre Dame fled to the ACC, while Louisville and Rutgers landed in the American before spinning off to the ACC and Big Ten. A 2014 ESPN documentary titled ‘Requiem For The Big East’ detailed the meteoric ascension and subsequent downfall of a conference that was once the most successful college sports league in America. In 1979, Providence College head coach Dave Gavitt formed the Big East Conference. Gavitt did so with ambitions of assembling a northeastern basketball-centric athletic conference. Villanova head coach Jay Wright has been at the helm of the program since 2001 and it did not take him long to establish a competitive and successful program.
Second-seeded Villanova continued to assert its dominance in the Big East with a 54-48 win over fourth-seeded Creighton on Saturday at Madison Square Garden ...
His performance just wasn't enough, as the Bluejays' second-best player was Alex O'Connell, who finished with just 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal. COLLIN. GILLESPIE. ‼️@Colling1021 'Cats take the lead ✌️ pic.twitter.com/u9410siUPO Villanova never seemed to lose control in this game, especially down the stretch, thanks to Big East Player of the Year Collin Gillespie, who finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. Villanova now has the third-most Big East title wins with six, breaking a tie with Syracuse, who has five. The Bluejays have never won a Big East Championship and are now 0-4 in the big game.
