UConn women’s basketball team could land in NCAA Bridgeport regional. Here’s how. (unknown)

Coming off an impressive run through the Big East Tournament, UConn could land in the...

Greensboro is a geographic reward for South Carolina’s season as the No. 1 team in the country from start to finish. A spot in Spokane will keep Stanford in the Pacific Time Zone en route to the Final Four. UConn fans purchased tickets anticipating the team would be at the building formerly known as Webster Bank Arena, so there’s an economic incentive to keep the State U in the state. Oklahoma (23-7) or Kansas (20-8) are the potential semifinal opponents. The Michigan and LSU losses allowed UConn to jump ahead, placing them firmly as a second seed. Teams from conferences with multiple programs in the top 16 can be moved easier if they are not locked into one of the top two seeds. Stanford, the second overall seed coming off the Pac-12 Tournament title, will assuredly be the top seed in Spokane. How could UConn land in the regional close to home as a No. 3 seed without multiple teams from Power Five conference clustered in the same bracket? The Big 12 Tournament is this weekend, with top-16 second seeds Baylor and Iowa State playing. Stanford (28-3) did receive 11 of the 28 first-place votes. Meanwhile, there were indeed upsets; Michigan and LSU — the teams directly ahead of UConn — lost in their first conference tournament games last week. South Carolina, the top team in the country all year, will no doubt retain the No. 1 seed and seems likely to land in Greensboro, a mere three-hour drive from campus.

‘Thursday was pretty cool. But semifinal Friday is even better’ (unknown)

A quarterfinal victory over Seton Hall, Hurley's alma mater, is hardly something that would show up on a program highlight montage, signal a new direction in a ...

UConn made its presence felt in New York for the first time in a long time. “We’ve got the best fans in the world,” Cole said. UConn held Seton Hall to 7-for-28 shooting in the first half and led 29-18. The Huskies last played before fans at this tournament in 2012. The lead was pushed to 16 midway through the second half. “This was our first real, live conference tournament game in a couple of years in front of fans. Hurley retreated to the coaches’ room that afternoon, adjacent to the locker room, closed the door and put his forehead to the wall. But his particular version of the Huskies, in this new era, had never tried itself in such a setting. A team can lose at the Garden in March and leave New York having felt like it lived it all. Three years ago, Hurley’s first season, UConn defeated South Florida in an AAC first-round game in Memphis and was blown out by Houston in a quarterfinal, 84-45. To remember that the air in the building just about crackles with energy, a team has to harness that energy and exit the building with the guarantee of re-entering 20-something hours later. “I think it’s a pressure to validate the very good regular season we had, to come in and beat a very good Seton Hall team.

UConn locks up on defense in double-digit win over Seton Hall (unknown)

Bring on the Wildcats. The University of Connecticut was able to stick to their brand of basketball as they focused on their defensive identity to move on ...

UConn chants, clothing and more could be found in Madison Square Garden as they looked to give the Huskies an advantage. If the Huskies can play a similar defensive performance to Thursday’s win, that would bode well for UConn’s chances to advance toward a Big East championship. That defensive focus could be seen the most in the first half as the Huskies held the Pirates to just 18 points. UConn played as advertised on offense with valuable contributions from all their starters with the absence of freshman Jordan Hawkins and an off night from Adama Sanogo. Seniors Tyrese Martin and R. J. Cole were a huge part of UConn’s offense on Thursday. Both players combined for 34 points to lead the team’s offensive barrage. Jackson was able to show off his passing ability too with some great feeds to his fellow Huskies and control UConn’s offensive tempo. UConn now moves on to one of their biggest tests of the year, a rematch with Villanova University on the biggest basketball stage in the world, Madison Square Garden. Villanova moved on to play the Huskies after a huge 17-point comeback to win by just a single point.

UConn men's basketball fans swarm the Big East Tournament for the first time in a decade (unknown)

Alex Chambrello, left, and Eimante Eidukaityt, both of Waterbury, made their first trip to Madison Square Garden since the beginning of the pandemic on Thursday ...

“Obviously, it’s not ideal but I get it,” said Brimecombe, who gave up his season tickets at the XL Center several years ago. Following new guidance from New York City officials, fans were not required to show proof of vaccination or wear a mask to attend the game. “As you get deeper into the tournament, there’s more and more UConn fans showing up.” “I think conference championship games are always so exciting,” Lawson said. “It’s going to be great, it’s going to be loud, there’s going to be a lot of UConn fans there tonight,” Zyskowski said. “It’s a ton of fun, especially for UConn fans because it’s like a madhouse,” Brimecombe said Thursday as they rode a Metro-North train to the game.

Takeaways from UConn men’s basketball’s Big East Tournament win over Seton Hall (unknown)

Big performances from the UConn defense and Tyrese Martin propelled the Huskies to victory.

It’s one of the reasons why UConn is comfortably a five seed on Sunday and the Xavier Musketeers— who went 13-29 (!) in their first round exit to Butler — are likely playing in the NIT next week. If those ticky-tack fouls start to pile up, especially on Cole or Sanogo, the Huskies will have to find positive ways to channel their frustrations. Sanogo is 36th in the country in rebounds at 8.6 per game. The Huskies did just that yesterday, going 12-14 from the charity stripe. Villanova’s ultra-efficient offense will be a major test for this team, but UConn seems ready for the task. The Huskies held Seton Hall to just 18 first half points, the Pirates’ lowest total of the season.

Ayanna Patterson is Miss Basketball. And best is yet to come from this generational talent. (unknown)

The UConn recruit guided Homestead to a 23-2 record and its fourth-straight sectional championship this season, averaging 25.8 points.

"I was trying to stay in the game mode," Patterson said. "She came down afterwards and I was so excited to take a photo with her," she continued. "Everyone stood up and started going crazy because we knew what she was going to do," Stephens said. It was also her ability to pass and create for teammates, to defend — all kinds of things where you're just like, 'Wow, that's next-level.'" Patterson peeked over her shoulder to make sure no one was chasing her and committed: She was going for the dunk. "I didn't know what to do," Parker said. "She was just down there going nuts on people," he laughed. "If I get the ball on the left side, I gotta go for the dunk." She's taken every advantage she can to make it a positive impact and help grow the game." Andre was confident his daughter could play college basketball and believed the academic rigors and class offerings at Homestead would enable her to get into any school she wanted. "Homestead has developed two Miss Basketball players — (that) says a lot about coach Parker and his program," she continued. Patterson took a moment to collect herself, then began to admire the red-white-and-blue jersey, clutching it with one hand as she wiped away tears with the other.

Big East Tournament Preview: No. 3 UConn men's basketball vs. No ... (The UConn Blog)

Martin and Cole will need to continue to shoulder the offensive load to match the production of a dynamic Villanova backcourt led by Collin Gillespie. Sanogo ...

In general, Villanova’s experience, depth and versatility makes them a tough out in just about any tournament, and the Wildcats are likely the odds-on favorite to win the Big East now following Providence’s debacle with Butler Thursday afternoon. With Samuels, who scored 13 points against UConn last time out, potentially out once again, the Huskies will almost certainly rely on the trio of Daniels, Moore and Gillespie to get most of their buckets. With the injuries and illnesses possibly holding Hawkins and Polley out of the game, the door is once again open for Jalen Gaffney to make a legitimate difference. If he can even hit one deep shot early on, it will help open up the paint for him, Martin and Cole to drive to the hoop and prevent double teams on Sanogo and Whaley in the post. After a stifling defensive performance against Seton Hall in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals to secure a 62-52 win, the UConn men’s basketball team will take on No. 2 seed Villanova Friday night in the semifinals. Whether it was first game jitters, an off night or something in between, the Wildcats may not be be playing their best basketball but still has managed to win all three of their games since losing in Hartford on Feb. 22

Here's what UConn men's basketball coach Dan Hurley had to say ... (Torrington Register Citizen)

One win down, two to go for the UConn men's basketball team in this year's Big East Tournament. The Huskies advanced to the semifinals of the tournament ...

“These guys, that’s why you come to a place like UConn to play, the big dogs play in the quarters and the semis. Jordan, it’s going to be tough for him to play in this tournament.” And that was pre-COVID in the AAC quarters... “And it’s a tough thing to do because (Jared) Rhoden, (Myles) Cale, those are two big time wings. At the rim, we made everything really challenging on them. And obviously we won it with our defense and our rebounding, which is our identity.”

The Sun's Arizin: Villanova Basketball's Seniors Step Up (VU Hoops)

But the spotlight for this game really belongs on two of the players who celebrated Senior Day just over a week ago: Caleb Daniels and Brandon Slater. Let's ...

Get excited.Providence, winner of the Big East regular-season title for the first time, is the No. 1 seed, but second-seeded Villanova is the favorite according to our model. And we’ll need them to play just as big a role tonight as Villanova takes on UConn in the Semi-Finals. The Big East tournament is in Madison Square Garden with a full house back in the stands. The Wildcats It’s absolutely true that Villanova wins as a team, but that team play is often made up of incredible individual efforts. That of course brings us to today’s poll, and we’re keeping it simple. Not only did he make an amazing effort play to come up with an offensive rebound to get to the line in the final seconds of the game, he calmly sank two shots to both tie and then win the game. Wheeler had just made a huge dunk to get the Johnnies back within a point of Villanova, and then they forced Jordan Longino into a “charge” (cue huge eye roll). Coming out of the TV timeout, St. John’s continued to attack Nova by driving the lane, but this time Slater was having none of it. St. John’s was starting to shift the momentum. Slater sprinted with him down the court, finished through contact, and hit the following free throw to bring Nova within one point of taking the lead. Villanova was on a big run, and starting to close in on St. John’s when Gillespie came up with a steal. He connected on five critical threes that kept Nova in the game in the first half and helped spark the comeback in the second half.
