Dodgers To Re-Sign Clayton Kershaw (unknown)

Very early in the offseason, it became apparent that the Dodgers and Rangers were the favorites for his services. The 2014 NL MVP didn't tip his hand publicly ...

Kershaw would’ve immediately stepped in as the Rangers’ top arm and a veteran voice for their younger starters. The Reds and A’s are generally expected to make impact starters available over the coming weeks. Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic first reported Kershaw was returning to the Dodgers on a one-year deal. Kershaw’s return to L. A. no doubt will come as a disappointment to the Rangers, who had made no secret of their affinity for him. Kershaw and Carlos Rodón were quite arguably the final two top-of-the-rotation starters available in free agency coming into the day. Because they’ll be a repeat payor, the Dodgers would be subject to a 30% tax on every dollar spent between $230MM and $250MM; they’ll be taxed at a 42% rate for expenditures between $250MM and $270MM. As the club showed last season in blowing past all three thresholds, though, that’s not a concern for ownership in certain circumstances. The southpaw missed two months between July and September due to inflammation in his elbow/forearm area. Yet it’s not out of the question the Dodgers keep trying to add there; they showed at last summer’s deadline in acquiring Max Scherzer they’re never afraid to pursue elite talent if the opportunity presents itself. And Kershaw’s peripherals were better, right among the top of the league. Yet there’s little question the Dodgers — again one of the top on-paper contenders in the league — also were motivated to bring him back because they believe he’ll still be an effective pitcher in 2022. He returned to make a few starts but dealt with renewed discomfort in his final regular season outing. It’ll be Kershaw’s fifteenth season in Dodger blue, as the future Hall of Famer returns to the only organization he’s ever known.

The only addition they had made to the starting rotation was signing Andrew Heaney, a reclamation project, to a one-year deal. Walker Buehler, Julio Urías, Tony Gonsolin and David Price are the club’s other options to start the season as it stands. In the end, it was up to him. He’s the face of the franchise. His offseason home is minutes from Globe Life Field where the Rangers play their games in Arlington. Rangers general manager Chris Young is a close friend. The deal will be official once Kershaw passes a physical.

Trevor Bauer put on administrative leave by MLB ahead of spring training (unknown)

Major League Baseball has put Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer on administrative through March 19.

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge denied the restraining order last August, ruling there was no evidence Bauer would “harm or even have contact” with her and saying she had been “materially misleading” in the petition. Bauer later retweeted a post from Watson: “When you stand on the TRUTH, the LORD will FREE you!” Of the 15 players previously suspended under the policy, all have accepted a settlement in which they agreed not to appeal. Bauer is due $32 million this season; players are not paid during spring training. The league did not handle player business during the lockout. Trevor Bauer will not report to Camelback Ranch this week.

New coaches can begin to develop relationships, new players can meet their new teammates, the works. The deadline for teams to tender their arbitration-eligible (and pre-arbitration-eligible) players a contract for 2022. The player files what he believes he should be paid, and the team files what they believe the player should be paid. Teams want protection in case a player they left exposed in the Rule 5 Draft comes to camp with a new slider or a swing change, and makes himself into a more desirable Rule 5 Draft target. Teams will be looking at possible Rule 5 Draft picks and negotiating arbitration salaries while also scouring the trade market and free agency. Inevitably, a few surprise injuries will be dropped on teams when they reconnect with players, and that could impact their free agent and trade decisions. Inevitably, some will have to wait into the season to sign. The Rule 5 Draft is a mechanism to prevent teams from burying players in the minors indefinitely. The Dodgers need a starter. Each offseason the Rule 5 Draft is held on the final day of the Winter Meetings. This offseason that was Dec. 9, a week after MLB locked out the players, so the Rule 5 Draft never happened. Or, now that minor-league camps are opening, an unprotected player could arrive in spring training and show enough improvement to captivate opposing teams, making himself a Rule 5 target in March even though he might have been barely on any club's radar in December. Executives fear a club would be unfairly penalized if it lost a player while operating under a different set of assumptions than it did at the time of its original decision. Otherwise the COVID policy figures to look a lot like last year's. The two sides just have to shake on it.

In his last start of the regular season, Kershaw exited the game with discomfort in the forearm area. ESPN Insider Connects Trevor Story to LA (unknown)

ESPN's Buster Olney believes that the Dodgers could be taking a look at shortstop Trevor Story during a frenetic 2022 free agency period.

If Story is healthy, he could be an absolute force at the plate for whatever team he plays for this coming year. The Dodgers need a shortstop. Story’s battle with elbow inflammation last season has given teams pause says Olney. It could also open the door to a short-term contract. The starting rotation needs to be beefed up, but the Dodgers also need to replace Corey Seager’s bat in the lineup. “I’m kinda watching the Dodgers on him Tim. I think there’s a strong sense in the industry that Trea Turner is a short-timer with the Dodgers. He’s not going to be a guy who’s with them beyond 2022. Now, free agency is here and the Dodgers, who are always willing to upgrade, are surely on the hunt for some roster upgrades.

Dodgers pitching prospect Hyun-il Choi is just 21-years-old, but has already won a major award.
