Big East Tournament Preview: No. 3 UConn men's basketball vs. No ... (The UConn Blog)

Martin and Cole will need to continue to shoulder the offensive load to match the production of a dynamic Villanova backcourt led by Collin Gillespie. Sanogo ...

In general, Villanova’s experience, depth and versatility makes them a tough out in just about any tournament, and the Wildcats are likely the odds-on favorite to win the Big East now following Providence’s debacle with Butler Thursday afternoon. With Samuels, who scored 13 points against UConn last time out, potentially out once again, the Huskies will almost certainly rely on the trio of Daniels, Moore and Gillespie to get most of their buckets. With the injuries and illnesses possibly holding Hawkins and Polley out of the game, the door is once again open for Jalen Gaffney to make a legitimate difference. If he can even hit one deep shot early on, it will help open up the paint for him, Martin and Cole to drive to the hoop and prevent double teams on Sanogo and Whaley in the post. After a stifling defensive performance against Seton Hall in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals to secure a 62-52 win, the UConn men’s basketball team will take on No. 2 seed Villanova Friday night in the semifinals. Whether it was first game jitters, an off night or something in between, the Wildcats may not be be playing their best basketball but still has managed to win all three of their games since losing in Hartford on Feb. 22

The Sun's Arizin: Villanova Basketball's Seniors Step Up (VU Hoops)

But the spotlight for this game really belongs on two of the players who celebrated Senior Day just over a week ago: Caleb Daniels and Brandon Slater. Let's ...

Get excited.Providence, winner of the Big East regular-season title for the first time, is the No. 1 seed, but second-seeded Villanova is the favorite according to our model. And we’ll need them to play just as big a role tonight as Villanova takes on UConn in the Semi-Finals. The Big East tournament is in Madison Square Garden with a full house back in the stands. The Wildcats It’s absolutely true that Villanova wins as a team, but that team play is often made up of incredible individual efforts. That of course brings us to today’s poll, and we’re keeping it simple. Not only did he make an amazing effort play to come up with an offensive rebound to get to the line in the final seconds of the game, he calmly sank two shots to both tie and then win the game. Wheeler had just made a huge dunk to get the Johnnies back within a point of Villanova, and then they forced Jordan Longino into a “charge” (cue huge eye roll). Coming out of the TV timeout, St. John’s continued to attack Nova by driving the lane, but this time Slater was having none of it. St. John’s was starting to shift the momentum. Slater sprinted with him down the court, finished through contact, and hit the following free throw to bring Nova within one point of taking the lead. Villanova was on a big run, and starting to close in on St. John’s when Gillespie came up with a steal. He connected on five critical threes that kept Nova in the game in the first half and helped spark the comeback in the second half.

Villanova steals one from St. John's, 66-65 (247Sports)

The mantra dictates "play 40 minutes of Villanova basketball" ... on Thursday night in the Big East Tournament Quarterfinals against St. John's, ...

Jordan Longino (3 Min, - ORtg, 0 Pts, 0-0 2PFG, 0-0 3PFG, 0-0 FT, 0 Reb (0 Off), 0 A, 1 TO, 0 Blk, 0 Stl) His strange stat line includes zeros for assists and turnovers but makes some sense given he only participated in 17% possessions. Chris Arcidiacono (5 Min, - ORtg, 0 Pts, 0-0 2PFG, 0-1 3PFG, 0-0 FT, 1 Reb (1 Off), 0 A, 0 TO, 0 Blk, 0 Stl) Slater drilled 5 of 5 free throws for the game including the two crucial FTs with 2.8 seconds remaining to turn a one point deficit into the game-winning, one-point lead. 9 rebounds in only 15 minutes is "getting it done" on the boards. Where there is a will there is a way is how the saying goes ... in this game, Gillespie, faced with plenty of ball pressure and physicality from the Red Storm defense, demonstrated will finding creative ways to score the ball. Samuels did great work on the boards, hit a pair of critical free throws late in the game and worked his way to the bucket for an important lay-up in crunch time as well. Moore never went on much of a scoring binge during the game but he did pick his spots to be aggressive and, as a result, he scored the ball relatively consistently throughout the contest. The game was nip-and-tuck from there on out; with ten lead changes taking place down the stretch. But that wasn't the case either ... the Cats responded by tearing up the eviction notice and clawing back to grab a 51-50 lead, with 8:11 remaining, on a pair of Caleb Daniels free throws. Luckily for 'Nova, the Johnnies couldn't hit threes in the first half either (shooting only 1-9, 11% from beyond the arc in the opening frame) - a weakness which served as a governor on just how large a lead the Red Storm could build while they blanketed the 'Nova offense. The Red Storm expanded their 7-point lead to a whopping, 17-point lead with 15:38 remaining in the game and it looked as if the Cats were being escorted out of the doors of the Garden and sent home early.

Stakes are high for UConn men's basketball vs. Villanova: 'Thursday ... (CT Insider)

The UConn men's basketball team defeated Seton Hall Thursday in a Big East Tournament...

UConn made its presence felt in New York for the first time in a long time. “We’ve got the best fans in the world,” Cole said. The Garden is a special place.” UConn held Seton Hall to 7-for-28 shooting in the first half and led 29-18. The Huskies last played before fans at this tournament in 2012. Hurley retreated to the coaches’ room that afternoon, adjacent to the locker room, closed the door and put his forehead to the wall. “This was our first real, live conference tournament game in a couple of years in front of fans. But his particular version of the Huskies, in this new era, had never tried itself in such a setting. A team can lose at the Garden in March and leave New York having felt like it lived it all. Three years ago, Hurley’s first season, UConn defeated South Florida in an AAC first-round game in Memphis and was blown out by Houston in a quarterfinal, 84-45. To remember that the air in the building just about crackles with energy, a team has to harness that energy and exit the building with the guarantee of re-entering 20-something hours later. “I think it’s a pressure to validate the very good regular season we had, to come in and beat a very good Seton Hall team.

Big East Tournament Odds: UConn-Villanova prediction, odds, pick ... (ClutchPoints)

UConn and Villanova face off in what should be an elite Big East classic! It's time to continue our college basketball odds series with a UConn-Villanova ...

This spread is close so if they want to cover they will need to keep it a one-possession game at the very end. UConn finished (13-17-1) ATS as Villanova ended a little better at (15-14-2). This game will be played at Madison Square Garden as it usually is, so it will once again be an elite atmosphere. Villanova is one of the worst teams in the nation in blocks per game at just 2.3. So without the rim protection, they must try and force them to shoot threes. They will need to play a similar style of basketball as Villanova is looking for revenge. That will usually get the job done but the one thing they need to improve on is their three-point shooting. The Wildcats’ record this season is (24-7). This should be a classic!

UConn has been dominant on the offensive glass this year, grabbing about 38% of offensive rebounds. The Wildcats shoot 36.4% from deep, also pound the offensive glass and commit fewer turnovers than the Huskies. UConn picks, you could win $26.45 on a $10 bet? Gutted: St. John's drops BET heartbreaker to Villanova, 66-65 (Rumble In The Garden)

Free throws in the last 3 seconds undo what was a strong upset bid from the Red Storm in the Big East Tournament.

After the first media timeout of the half, Posh Alexander picked up his third foul and the Red Storm offense began to sputter when the Wildcat defense started effectively forcing Julian Champagnie to catch the ball away from is spots. However, the Red Storm’s game plan to double any Wildcat with the ball in the post began to backfire when the team was unable to force a turnover and the patient Villanova players were able to pivot around until they found an open shooter on the perimeter. Over time, the Red Storm softened, and Villanova started their surge. The Johnnies were competent offensively in the half-court, as the team did score over .9 points per possession while spending a majority of the half playing at Villanova’s pace. Despite being forced into their half-court offense, which other coaches allegedly described as the “easiest team in the Big East to game plan for” in the half-court due to their lack of offensive sets, St. John’s appeared comfortable playing a slower game for stretches. After reaching the quarterfinals for the sixth straight season, St. John’s looked to play on Friday night in the Big East Tournament for the first time since 2000.

Friday College Basketball Best Bets: Back UConn In Big East ... (TheLines.com)

TheLines lead writer Eli Hershkovich shares his college basketball bets bets for Villanova - UConn in the Big East tournament semifinals.

The Huskies closed as two-point home favorites in their second affair. When Wright uses Samuels at the five-spot in his small-ball lineup, his floor-spacing presence forces Huskies center Adama Sanogo to guard the perimeter. The glass wasn’t a factor in the outcome because each team was ultra-efficient with at least 1.11 points per possession. I’d expect Samuels to give it a go once again, but Wright could play it cautiously with March Madness on deck. But ShotQuality stated that the Huskies should’ve tallied a nine-point win, grading the Wildcats’ contested makes as positive shooting luck. UConn presents a top-two rebounding rate at each end in Big East play.

UConn men's basketball tops Seton Hall in Big East quarterfinals ... (CT Insider)

NEW YORK — With the Big East tournament highlighting this week and the NCAA tournament looming on the near horizon, Dan Hurley knew his team needed to get ...

“They take a lot of pride in that, and they take a lot of pride in rebounding, too. It’s the second straight trip to the Big East semifinals for UConn, which lost to Creighton in last year’s semis. The Huskies had four blocks and forced six turnovers, but those numbers don’t even do justice to the suffocating defense they played. “That’s who we are as a team, that’s who we are as a group. “Every game, defense and rebounding are our first game keys,” Martin said. “It’s gonna be a good match-up,” Cole said. Guys like Andre and Isaiah make things so easy for those guys, because he’s so unselfish.” Meanwhile, sophomore Andre Jackson was everywhere, finishing with six points, six boards, four assists, two steals a block and numerous floor burns, hitting the court multiple times for loose balls. He’s enhanced the games of R.J. and Adama and Tyrese — all the guys that kind of get the scoring and production on the offensive end. And that’s how the third-seeded Huskies advance in this tournament. Martin added eight boards and helped hold Seton Hall leading scorer Jared Rhoden to seven points on 2-for-13 shooting. The Huskies couldn’t have been much more impressive defensively in their Big East quarterfinal-round bout with Seton Hall on Thursday night.
