North Carolina is making a charge toward the NCAA Tournament, but if they make any real noise in March it will be because of RJ Davis.

The 6-foot guard was UNC’s most valuable player in the win over Duke. He had 11 first-half points, including a buzzer-beating three. It was a game reminiscent of recent UNC lead guards like Joel Berry and Marcus Paige. Junior forward Armando Bacot is the Tar Heels’ best player. UNC faces Virginia Tech in the ACC Tournament semifinals on March 11 and hasn’t lost since Feb. 16. The Tar Heels have the on-paper talent to make a run through the ACC Tournament and past the first weekend of the big dance. North Carolina Tar Heels rolled to a win over Virginia Cavaliers in their first ACC tournament game Thursday. UNC basketball plays Virginia Tech Hokies ...

It was the first time a UNC player outscored a team in a half since Reggie Bullock had 21 points to Maryland’s 20 in a 62-52 win on Jan. 19, 2013. Carolina didn’t play like a team coming off its biggest win of the season. Bacot now sits at 398, which is just one behind Tyler Hansbrough and 18 behind Brice Johnson, who set the record at 416. Bacot broke a tie with Brice Johnson who had 23 the 2015-16 season. “They’re a rhythm team, the offense that they run, our physicality with them really made them struggle.” “I just wanted our best defensive on Clark. We felt like his size and his athleticism would bother him.” Having guys on the floor that are also threats gets me more space, more time and more chances to be open.” And the 43 total points allowed were also the fewest in an ACC tournament game in the shot clock era, which began in 1985-86. Clark is the one player who really makes the Cavaliers go. But North Carolina gave the Cavaliers a dose of what that feels like in its 63-43 win during the ACC tournament quarterfinals on Thursday. “I thought where we got our confidence and our strength was us continuing to get defensive stops,” UNC coach Hubert Davis said. It was the fewest points allowed in a first half during the shot clock era in ACC tournament history.

UNC basketball cruised past Virginia, setting up an ACC Tournament semifinal matchup with Virginia Tech. Here's what to know about the Hokies.

“Do you double-team the post, or do you stay at home with the shooters? He finished with 21 points on 8-15 shooting and was personally outscoring UVa. at halftime. They’re just a very difficult team to match up with.” The Tar Heels fell short of that mark against Virginia’s pesky pack line but assuaged any immediate Durham hangover concerns with some strong defense of their own. The winner of this rubber match plays either Duke or Miami in the ACC championship game. “They’ve got great spacing and balance.

Brady Manek skies for an offensive rebound and then spins on Jayden Gardner on the baseline for a reverse layup for the game's first basket. Virginia is struggling to keep up on both ends of the floor through the first 15 minutes of the game. Brady Manek drives baseline and scores a layup to put UNC up 33-13 at the half. The officials spend an extended time reviewing a Francisco Caffaro offensive foul in which he elbowed Brady Manek in the chin, but the refs conclude that it was just a common foul. Kihei Clark dribbles in a circle in the paint and gets free for an easy layup. UNC has an immediate answer on Brady Manek's second three-pointer of the game. Beekman fouls Caleb Love on a three-pointer and Love makes two of three free throws. Love dishes to Manek for an easy layup, giving Manek 21 points in the game. Jayden Gardner makes an acrobatic up-and-under layup as the Cavaliers take advantage of a 5-on-4 situation with Caleb Love stumbling into the photographers on the baseline on the other end of the floor. Poindexter feeds Shedrick for a layup over McKoy to bring the margin to 20 points. Poindexter pulls up and cans a three-pointer to put the Cavaliers over 40 points. What's your score prediction for Virginia vs. UVA will need one of its best defensive performances of the season to have a shot at advancing to the ACC semifinals. Share your thoughts at Cavaliers Now Forums Armando Bacot had 23 points on 10/11 shooting in UNC's win at Duke on Saturday and he finished second in the voting for ACC Player of the Year. He has the ability to take over games and Virginia must be sound and physical in the paint to prevent that from happening on Thursday night. Virginia could be better adjusted to playing in the ACC Tournament environment than UNC, though. Virginia will likely need to do the same in order to have a chance against a North Carolina team that flexed its offensive firepower at Duke on Saturday. Armando Bacot, Caleb Love, RJ Davis, and Brady Manek each scored at least 20 points as the Tar Heels showed just how dangerous they can be when they play their best.

UNC Basketball: Tar Heels in need of victory to get off 8/9 line? (Keeping It Heel)

Is the UNC basketball program still on a collision course with a 1-seed in the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament? The Tar Heels will.

It’s my belief that an ACC Tournament semifinal win over the Virginia Tech Hokies would do just that, even if they were to lose the following night in the conference championship game. At present, that top seed would be the 29-3 Arizona Wildcats. The latter would still put them in a likely collision course with a 2-seed in the tournament’s first weekend, but it would at least keep them away from the top seed in their bracket.

The North Carolina Tar Heels were an NCAA Tournament bubble team at one point during head coach Hubert Davis's first season in charge.

But it appears the Heels are playing their best when it matters most. However, inconsistencies have held the team back for chunks of the year. Fellow sophomore backcourt mate RJ Davis was in double figures for four of those games including 21 points on 56% shooting and 50% from deep in the win over the Blue Devils. It may be construed as coach speak, but playing your best basketball heading into the conference and NCAA tournaments is key to a potential National Championship run. Instant Analysis: UNC Rolls in ACC Tournament Opener (247Sports)

The Tar Heels will play No. 7 seed Virginia Tech in the semifinals on Friday night.

By halftime he had outscored Virginia, 19-13, which marked the first time a Tar Heel had outscored an opponent in a half since Reggie Bullock scored 21 points to Maryland’s 20 on Jan. 19, 2013. In UNC’s last 12 games, Manek is averaging 17.6 points on 51.3% shooting, including 43.4% from the 3-point line. The Cavaliers shot 18.5% and committed six turnovers in the first half, which yielded 0.41 points per possession. Brady Manek started his postseason much in the same way he closed his regular season. UNC’s victory over Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday was undoubtedly the program’s biggest win in several years, which set up the possibility of a sluggish start to the postseason. That’s with the Tar Heels struggling to find much rhythm offensively in shooting below 40% for only the sixth time this season.

North Carolina held Virginia to just 13 points in the first half, an all-time low in the ACC Tournament since the start of the shot clock era. They outrebounded the Cavs by 14 (46-32), assisted on 17 of their 25 made buckets, and committed just seven turnovers as a team. UNC Basketball Locks Down Virginia to Reach ACC Tournament ... (Chapelboro.com)

Virginia's defense may have been more decorated, but it was UNC's defense which stole the show in Brooklyn Thursday night.

We don’t look at things that are outside of our control, and we don’t look at things in the past.” It gave Carolina some down time in the Big Apple, but Black was eager to finally take the floor. It was certainly a quieter day for Bacot than his 29-point, 22-rebound performance against the Cavaliers in Chapel Hill in January, but it was an historic one nonetheless. Carolina led by as many as 24 points in the second half while cruising to the 63-43 win. “And our attention, and our focus, and our preparation and our practice from last Saturday has been squarely on the ACC Tournament… that’s where we are. Unlike Virginia’s history, Bacot’s was of a positive nature: he scored 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to secure his 24th double-double of the season, which is a new single-season record for UNC. Bacot broke Brice Johnson’s record of 23, set during the 2015-16 season. And having guys on the floor that are also threats gets me more space, more time and more chances to be open.” The UNC offense wasn’t much better, but got a major boost from graduate forward Brady Manek, who outscored the Cavaliers himself with 19 points on 7-11 shooting in the first half. Manek would finish with a team-high 21 points in his first ACC Tournament game. One of the things that I hope people are seeing, he’s not just a great three-point shooter. Virginia’s defense may have been the more decorated unit, but it was Carolina’s defense which stole the show in Brooklyn Thursday night. Carolina’s defense combined with historically poor Virginia offense in the first half.

At the half, Manek alone was outscoring Virginia 19-13. With his strong first 20 minutes of play, Manek accomplished something that a UNC basketball player hasn’t done since 2013. As he once again shot over 50 percent from the floor, it was his first-half performance that was rather eye-popping.

ACC Tournament Preview: Tar Heels face off with Virginia Cavaliers (Keeping It Heel)

The UNC basketball program faces off with the Virginia Cavaliers in an ACC Tournament quarterfinal showdown Thursday night.

The Tar Heels outrebounded the Cavaliers by eight (36-28) and assisted on 19 of their 28 made buckets. They lost by a 10-point margin following the intermission and never really challenged the Tar Heels. At the Dean Smith Center in early January, The Tar Heels cruised to a 74-58 victory behind a strong second-half performance overall and an incredible 29-point, 22-rebound double-double from Armando Bacot. The Tar Heels are also the best free throw shooting team in the conference at an outstanding 77 percent.
