THE PLAYERS Championship suspended for the day Friday due to ... (WOKV)

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — THE PLAYERS Championship said play will be suspended for the rest of the day Friday due to “unplayable golf course conditions.”.

The PGA Tour says tickets and parking are non-refundable. Guests must present their Friday mobile ticket at any of the tournament entry gates to be scanned. Tour officials said they are anticipating winds that could be in the neighborhood of 60 mph on Saturday, and the pace of play will be slower. If they are unable to resume play on Friday, Tour officials said they are likely in a situation where they will have to finish the tournament on Monday. While Tour officials say they are confident they can finish the tournament on Monday, the possibility of a Tuesday finish is there. The PGA Tour said players may finish the hole they were on at the time of suspension.

We would stick with that as the earliest" If our calculations on everything hold together and we're able to start tomorrow, we certainly expect to be finished with the championship on Monday." At one point on Thursday, Collin Morikawa -- who is even thru 15 holes -- hit a top with his 3-wood because conditions were so slick and nasty. Players like Jon Rahm and Will Zalatoris, who played early on Thursday, might not hit a shot again until Sunday depending on delays and how much water the course takes on overnight. After enduring an early downpour, players were pulled off the course at 11:15 a.m. ET with Round 2 just about to start as Round 1 headed toward a close.

It was break some golf clubs or shave my beard,” Fleetwood, the English golfer, said of his recent struggles on the PGA Tour. “I went for the beard.”

“I was quite happy when the delay came,” he said. He was playing in a tournament with his fellow tour players Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa on his 31st birthday in January, he said, when the duo looked at him and told him: “We had to Google your age. “Clare definitely prefers me with a beard, so I’ll definitely grow it back,” he said. “I still have one of the best jobs in the world,” Fleetwood said. He finished with a birdie on the par-5 16th hole and another on the treacherous 18th. Looking ahead to his next round, he said: “I might play terrible, I might play great. Then I started the day by holing a putt and got going again.” And that goes for even the best of the best. “I’ve just not been performing to the level that I want to perform at. I went for the beard.” “You’re playing minimal events on both tours,” Fleetwood said. “So then your confidence takes a hit because you’re not quite comfortable out on the golf course.

The Players Championship facing scheduling crisis with rain delays (New York Post)

The Players Championship is fighting a race against time after having play suspended for the second consecutive day at TPC Sawgrass.

It’s a shame to not finish up at least one round in the books, and now it’s just a bit of a waiting game.” “Our plan is to resume play [Saturday], no earlier than 11:00 a.m. That would be the earliest.” Right now, we’ve messaged our players 11:00 a.m., no earlier, and that’s the plan.’ ” “My caddie said, ‘Just land it a little past and right.’ I actually thought I missed it, but I looked back up and [the ball] disappeared. Brice Garnett is also 6-under, but was through 13 holes of his opening round. “We are very confident at this point [that] we’re into a Monday finish,” Young said.

Players 2022 live updates: Tommy Fleetwood, Tom Hoge share ... (GolfDigest.com)

Tommy Fleetwood plays his third shot on the 14th hole during the first round of the Players Championship. David Cannon.

Hideki of course is one of a handful of players to hold the course record at TPC Sawgrass when he shot the opening 63 during the first round of the canceled 2020 Players. 8:15 a.m.: Will Zalatoris has started his Players Championship with a bogey at the opening hole. Beau Hossler and Russell Knox each converted birdie putts at the par-5 11th and Kramer Hickok started his day with a birdie at No. 1. It's been a tough couple months with some injuries for Webb, and it looks like the former Players champion will be behind the eight-ball early here at TPC Sawgrass. 8:37 a.m.: The 11th hole appears to be playing quite easy so far this morning—Tommy Fleetwood joins the group at 1-under par early with a nine-footer for birdie. Patrick Cantlay and Jon Rahm both burned the edge with their long-range birdie putts at 10, and Viktor Hovland, who looks like he got a fresh haircut since Sunday when he held the lead for much of the final round at Bay Hill, just missed his 13-footer for birdie. 10:53 a.m.: Patrick Reed may not have been getting a lot of love from oddsmakers, but Will Zalatoris was a popular bet and he has now moved into a tie for first at four under after a two-putt birdie at the par-5 11th. After narrowly qualifying for this event, the 31-year-old Brit is off to a fantastic start after birdieing the difficult 18th hole to shoot three under on his opening nine. They kind of develop in the morning and they come at us in waves throughout the day." His latest red number was a 9-footer holed at the par-3 13th hole to get to 5-under. Poulter made the birdie putt and took off sprinting again, with the players in front of him moving out of the way so he hit his drive. When he birdied the 16th, he was at seven under and had a two-shot lead.

Weather updates: THE PLAYERS Championship (pgatour.com)

UPDATED THURSDAY, MARCH 10 (11 a.m. ET): More than one inch of rain (1.3 inches) fell overnight at TPC Sawgrass, delaying the start of the first round one hour to 7:45 a.m. Play was suspended at 11 a.m. ET due to dangerous weather. UPDATED THURSDAY, MARCH 10 (3:14 p.m. ET): Round 1 resumed at 3:14 p.m. ET. Nearly a half-inch of rain (0.45 inches) fell on TPC Sawgrass during the delay of 4 hours, 14 minutes. We are meticulous in every aspect but it is certainly fair to say Saturday’s winds are a point of focus for us, particularly as we could be finishing up Friday’s round on Saturday, so that affects Friday’s set up as well. At that point we've got to evaluate the golf course and make sure that it is in proper condition for us to get back out there.” The superintendent and his crew are going to need proper time to pick up debris and get the golf course back in condition. As the players sought shelter, the forecast showed continuing rain and lighting at least through 4 p.m. ET. As for Saturday, more severe winds have prompted a gale warning. UPDATED SUNDAY, MARCH 13 (10:20 a.m. ET): Round 3 tee times will be approximately 2:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. ET, with players in threesomes off of Nos. 1 and 10. “In our meetings with Wade Stettner, our meteorologist, and looking at future models, there is the possibility that this area that's settling in right now could move slightly to the north. If players cannot return to the course Friday afternoon, THE PLAYERS is likely headed for its first Monday finish since Fred Funk’s incredible win as a 48-year-old in 2005. Forty-eight players had yet to complete their opening rounds when play was suspended because of standing water on the greens and approaching lightning. There is no rain in the forecast for Saturday afternoon or Sunday, but players will face with cold temperatures and high winds. (Click here for how to follow the action live)

Tommy Fleetwood's Close Shave Saves Face at Players ... (Sports Illustrated)

The Englishman, sans beard, shoots 6-under 66 at TPC Sawgrass to take the lead in a rain-interrupted first round.

The last two years he has struggled, he admitted, and he might be in that downturn for three years, who knows? “My wife prefers me with a beard,” he said, “so I’ll definitely grow it back.” Or he might be coming out of the other side this week. “Then I birdie eight, one of the hardest holes on the course.” Fleetwood’s 24-foot birdie putt just barely curled in the left edge. Fleetwood did what you’re supposed to do at TPC Sawgrass. He birdied the first three par 5s he played. He bogeyed the sixth after a badly errant drive and he saved par at the seventh after another poor drive, an approach shot over the green into a lie so thick it nearly required a ladle. “I completely stole par at seven,” he said with a smile. It might be a while before you hear about Fleetwood again this week, in other words, because he may not get back on the course until sometime Saturday, depending upon the weather. So, I went for the beard.” Friday’s forecast calls for all-day rain and the weather radar shows great globs of green, orange and yellow massing for the assault. You can believe in hair care as the path to better golf or not. Then came the last two years and … poof!

The PGA Tour’s first suspension of play in 2022 meant the opening round wouldn’t be completed on Thursday. Sixty-nine of 72 players in the morning wave completed the first round Thursday; 60 of 72 players in the afternoon wave began the first round. It was the first of three consecutive birdies for Fleetwood, who canned a 13-foot birdie putt at 1 and wedged to nine feet to set up birdie at the second. Harold Varner III was cruising along at 7 under with birdies on all four of the par 5s, when he spun his tee shot off the green at the infamous par-3 17th island green. He holed more than 100 feet of putts on the day, the longest of which was a 24-foot birdie at the par-3 eighth, which was his seventh and final birdie of the day. Starting on the back nine at TPC Sawgrass, Fleetwood took advantage of soft conditions, no wind and preferred lies in the fairways. He barely squeaked into the field at the Players, which exempts the world top 50.

2022 Players Championship picks, odds: Expert predictions, betting ... (CBSSports.com)

Who will win The Players? Our experts dive into all the twists and turns of the year's first significant tournament.

I'm not running out to bet Rahm for a missed cut, just pointing out that I'm not in love with his outlook for the week. I'll happily fade Cantlay in matchups and throw a little on him to miss the cut at +275. Sleeper -- Brooks Koepka (35-1): This is going to be a chalky sleeper pick, but I can't help but root for Brooks in this spot. Star who definitely won't win -- Dustin Johnson: The former world No. 1 hasn't turned in an under-par day in his last three rounds and he's coming off a brief week at the Genesis in which he failed to make the cut. My surprise prediction is that, on a course conducive to giving up low scores, the winner has to stage a comeback in the final round. Sleeper -- Talor Gooch (50-1): There are few sleepers in the field who have the same potential Gooch does. Winner -- Viktor Hovland (20-1): Hovland missed the cut a year ago by two strokes after incurring a two-stroke penalty in his opening round for failing to return his ball to the correct spot on the 15th green. He should be amped for such a big-time event, and though there are better choices for who will actually finish in the top 10, there aren't any better numbers on four-time major winners than this one. His history here is as good as anybody in the field, and his number is way too long at 50-1. His career strokes gained of 1.99 is fifth-best in the field behind Si Woo Kim, Hideki Matsuyama, J.T. and Sergio Garcia. Oh, and he's somehow become one of the best putters in the world. Winner -- Justin Thomas (14-1): I know nobody has gone back to back at TPC Sawgrass, but I'm unconcerned with how this multi-decade history actually affects J.T. in 2022. With a tremendous field featuring 47 of the top 50 golfers in the world, we are in for an epic ride beginning with Thursday's first round.

Would be pretty wild if the tournament ended on Tuesday morning! 2022 The Players: Friday Recap, Reaction & Analysis From Rainy TPC Sawgrass There's plenty of time to salvage the tournament, of course, but when we look back on this event in the future, we will likely remember it for the dreary, rainy bummer of a week it's been thus far. » https://t.co/dZJBEwI5kH https://t.co/rNxhnU16sF March 11, 2022 welp— The First Cut Podcast (@FirstCutPod) https://t.co/J4bs23QxtL March 11, 2022 All in all, this week has been a sloppy, unfortunate mess, especially with all the excitement and storylines coming into the event. A glance at the radar shows more rain expected on Saturday morning before the wind howls in the afternoon.

Rain pushes The Players into the weekend; Monday finish a certainty (WJXT News4JAX)

Two days of bad weather and a miserable forecast for the rest of Friday has forced the postponement of The Players Championship, with a Monday finish now a ...

Bad weather this year forces the more than 20 restaurant vendors to lose money. Bad weather isn’t good news for the business side of the tournament though. Despite fickle Florida weather, there hasn’t been a Monday finish at The Players since 2005. Rain was steady throughout the early part of Thursday’s first round. Young said that he feels confident that the event can wrap up even if The Players went into a three-hole playoff. A four-hour weather delay Thursday led to a truncated opening round.

Former Georgia Bulldogs Keith Mitchell, Brian Harman start strong at ... (The Florida Times-Union)

Keith Mitchell credited Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps with helping his recent gains, including a 5-under 67 at The Players Championship.

But he found a rhythm after the weather delay, with birdies on No. 2, No. 4, No. 6 and No. 9. In 2018, he shot an opening-round 67, only to follow up with a 75 and a 78 that plunged him down into a tie for 77th. "[Phelps] was kind of helping me through some like downs and kind of really hit the reset button about a year ago," he said. That would have been my first major [in 2018], and I definitely did not handle it very well, so hopefully I can do better." If not for a bogey at 18, Mitchell would have finished as the Thursday night co-leader alongside Tommy Fleetwood and Tom Hoge. "I've had a little bit of time to adjust to the spotlight a little bit at this golf tournament, because in the Stadium on 17 and 18 is really unlike any other golf course and any other tournament," he said. It was more of kind of how to act and focus on the course, which is how you would do in swim meets." That rhythm has been a recurring theme for Harman at TPC Sawgrass, particularly since the tournament's move to March. Harman owns three top-10 finishes here, including two since the schedule switch: a tie for eighth in 2019 and a tie for third in 2021. His best finish at The Players came in 2019, when he shot a 71 and a 65 before fading over the weekend to 3 under for the tournament and a tie for 47th. The day brought a superb finish for Harman, who turned his Thursday around as the first golfer to hit a shot on the back nine, opening the delayed round at 7:45 a.m. A too-short approach on No. 10 led to a bogey, and he dropped another stroke after finding water on No. 11. "I'll never forget, it really made an impact on me. Mitchell stayed nearly trouble-free, including an eagle at No. 9 to wrap up the front nine in 33.

“In our calculations, these are all based on the weather conditions that are forecasted, and we feel that we’ve got favorable conditions. Play was then suspended due to darkness at 6:36 p.m. ET with the majority of the field unable to finish. We will assess the weather situation with Wade Stettner, our meteorologist, and at that point we will have a better idea of what is happening with this severe weather system that we’re expecting to come through the area sometime between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. tomorrow. We are still building in our normal three hours between the two waves, making sure that things turn right on time, spacing them appropriately. “The golf course has just reached a point of saturation, and unfortunately the weather conditions are not providing us any relief, so we have suspended play for the day,” said Gary Young, the PGA Tour’s vice president of rules, competition and administration. The staff battled tough conditions, including using squeegees for puddles on greens, but it was a losing battle.

Can the Players Championship be shortened? Or finish on ... (Golf.com)

The Players Championship has been doused by rain. Will it be shortened or even finish on Monday? Here's what you need to know.

Windy! “The conditions we’re going to be facing [Saturday] with the winds that are predicted, the pace of play is going to be slower as well,” Young said. Once that front goes through, we know we’re going to have good weather conditions, and then we’re just planning it like we would normally plan a round of golf.” According to the PGA Tour handbook, when it comes to the Players Championship, the commissioner has the ability to extend play beyond Monday in order to complete 72 holes. Although it’s going to be windy, we feel we’re going to have the next two days rain-free following this weather event [Saturday] morning. We just want to message that to everyone. “The potential is there,” Young said. “The potential, but let’s hope not. “We are very confident at this point — we’re into a Monday finish,” Young said. Young said play won’t begin before 11 a.m. on Saturday. “The rules committee will arrive early [Saturday] morning,” he said. If our calculations on everything hold together and we’re able to start [Saturday], we certainly expect to be finished with the championship on Monday.” Young added that, in an ideal world, there’d be enough time on Monday evening to squeeze in a three-hole playoff, if necessary. The first round of the tournament was delayed on Thursday morning, again a few hours later and a handful of players never even teed off. Play was suspended at 11:15 a.m. and called for the day four hours later.

Day 1 review: THE PLAYERS Championship (pgatour.com)

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – A quick look at Thursday's water-logged opening round at THE PLAYERS Championship.

Upon sticking his tee shot to 4 feet at the par-3 17th, the veteran Englishman sprinted to the green as the crowd roared. Hoge entered THE PLAYERS at No. 3 on the FedExCup, and he matched Fleetwood’s opening 6-under 66 to share the overnight lead. Poulter completed the opening round, as did his playing partners Pat Perez and Jhonattan Vegas. After Varner’s ball plugged on the opening hole, Ryan Goble, the caddie for Will Zalatoris, found Varner’s ball with about five seconds to spare before Varner would have had to declare a lost ball and take a stroke-and-distance penalty. He was alone in the lead before becoming the first player of the week to hit his tee shot into the water at 17. THE GOOD AND THE BAD: Golf giveth and golf taketh away. He finished T20 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational after making the cut on the number, and the road to redemption continues – clean-shaven and all. “Just was in between clubs and didn't execute the shot, and that's what you get a lot out here. The opening round will resume at 7:15 a.m. ET Friday. Varner made par on the hole, then rolled off seven birdies and no bogeys over the next 15. HOGE EMBRACES THE GRIND: North Dakota native Tom Hoge earned his first PGA TOUR title at last month’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and the adopted Texan hasn’t slowed down. After narrowly gaining THE PLAYERS entry via his spot on the Official World Golf Ranking, the Englishman carded an opening-round 66 including a chip-in birdie from 49 feet on the par-4 18th (his ninth), currently playing as the most difficult hole in Round 1.

His tee shot was a little long and a little left, and it caught the walkway and rolled down the slope as it hugged the edge. He hit a tree on the 15th and dropped down into a flower bush, from where he could only hack out. Because players can lift, clean and place golf balls in closely mown areas, he didn't have to stand on the wooden frame to attempt his pitch. Daniel Berger was among those at 5 under, and he was the first sign the conclusion of the opening round might have to wait. And still a long way to go before this tournament takes shape. He holed a 40-foot birdie putt from the fringe on No. 12 and, just as important, hit a beautiful lag putt from 50 feet on the 13th. Out came the squeegees, and a delay waiting for them to move away the water. He slowly reached into his bag for a rain jacket. The opening round was delayed an hour at the start, and then was suspended for 4 hours, 15 minutes. He followed with birdie putts from 18 feet and 15 feet to reach 5 under. Puddles formed on the putting surfaces when play was stopped, and the rain kept coming. All the Monday finishes have occurred in March. The Players was held in May for 12 years until returning to its earlier date in 2019.
