MLB ends lockout, details of CBA emerge (McCovey Chronicles)

The San Francisco Giants will open the season on April 8 after MLB and the Players Association agreed on a new CBA to end the 99-day lockout.

The 2022 schedule will remain as is, with the canceled games getting filled in as doubleheaders and with a few extra days at the end of the season. On the bright side, the players were able to avoid the 14-team postseason field that the league wanted — but it will still be a 12-team field, which is a bit too big for most people’s liking. Jersey and helmet advertisements will also be permitted, which will be a bit of an eyesore, but will generate more revenue. Furthermore, there will also be a limit on how many times a player can be optioned in a given season (five), which has never been the case in the past. That’s not actually the case, but the league did create a 45-day window to implement new rules for next year, and those two have been mentioned. Sports betting before was a matter of league policy—now, been decided by both sides— Evan Drellich (@EvanDrellich) March 10, 2022 The MLB Rule 5 Draft was supposed to take place in early December, but was put on hold due to the lockout. That’s a win for the Giants, who left some notable prospects — such as Diego Rincones, Ricardo Genovés, Seth Corry, and David Villar — unprotected. It’s no secret that service time manipulation is a rampant issue in baseball. The dissenting votes came from the player reps for the New York Yankees, New York Mets, St. Louis Cardinals, and Houston Astros, plus all eight members of the executive subcommittee (Zack Britton, Jason Castro, Gerrit Cole, Francisco Lindor, Andrew Miller, James Paxton, Max Scherzer, and Marcus Semien). The players wanted it, because they think it will increase pay for players. The owners wanted it, as it means more offense, and offense sells.

MLB Lockout Ends and 162-Game Season Will Be Played (The New York Times)

After a long series of deadlines, threats and delays, a tentative agreement was reached and a full 162-game season should begin on April 7.

“This negotiation started a long way apart — and in case anyone missed the memo — they did come with a very, very broad agenda for change. A week after Manfred called off the games, M.L.B. tried again to facilitate a deal with a new deadline. In negotiating this agreement, the club owners and the players pushed each other to the brink. Realizing that significant changes to the system would be tense and full of brinkmanship, the union spent years preparing for this fight against M.L.B. owners, who ran an estimated $11 billion-a-year business before the pandemic. Although a top union subcommittee voted 8-0 against the deal, the union’s larger executive committee voted 26 to 12 overall in favor of it. In the end, a full schedule will be retrofitted into the existing calendar, with the previously canceled games being made up on off-days and with nine-inning doubleheaders scattered throughout the season, which will end only three days later than normal. There was a lot of uncertainty at a point in time when there’s a lot of uncertainty in the world. Players remained engaged and unified from beginning to end, and in the process re-energized our fraternity.” With the agreement, baseball will get to approach something closer to a normal season for the first time since 2019. He then tried to strike a more conciliatory tone with players — and fans who watched the labor fight drag out in public and compromise spring training. “Being back on the field is exciting for owners, players, fans as well,” Gerrit Cole, a Yankees star pitcher and a member of a union subcommittee that worked on the deal, said in a phone interview. The five-year collective bargaining agreement will increase pay for young players and better incentivize teams to compete, among other provisions.

MLB dodged a disaster by agreeing to end the lockout, but other ... (CNBC)

Major League Baseball may have reached a deal with players, and saved the full season, but several sticking points remain.

"Those (injuries) are always a concern," Clark said Friday, responding to a CNBC inquiry on the matter. There could be muscle overuse leading to injuries as MLB needs to make up roughly 90 games it postponed due to the lockout. But it could add three to five days to the season, which usually ends in early October. Also, during the 2020 season, stars, including New York Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge, missed time due to leg injuries. MLB returned to its 162-game schedule in 2021. That means small-market and non-competitive MLB clubs could especially be hurt if cash-strapped fans can't pony up the money to pay for tickets. Manfred said he called MLBPA executive director Tony Clark "and expressed my desire to work with him. Usually, players get nearly two months to prepare, but since MLB will start its year on April 7, players have only three weeks. "And it's hurting." MLB's record high for attendance was 79.5 million fans in the 2007 season. It's when clubs promote new players, the 2022 schedule, ticket packages and stay engaged with season-ticketholders for renewals. Conway said the league would need to repair its image, especially in smaller markets.

The MLB Lockout Is Over. Now the Chaos Begins (Sports Illustrated)

Get ready for a free-agent frenzy, a mad dash of trades and spring training games. The next month is going to be baseball like you've never seen it before.

And as all of the front-office activity is going down, players will be reporting to spring training as soon as possible. The incoming rush of free agency will be joined by a similar one of trade activity. But NPB and MLB agreed to pause the clock in this case: Suzuki has a few more weeks to negotiate with teams. If you’re familiar with the “posting” system for free agents coming from Nippon Professional Baseball, you’ll recall that players have just a 30-day window to talk with potential suitors in MLB, and 30 days was obviously up here a long time ago. Remember the chaos of late November? With Max Scherzer, Javy Báez, Marcus Semien, Corey Seager and more all flying off the market in the space of just a few days? After a 99-day lockout, plenty of contentious debates and more than a few blown deadlines, MLB and the MLBPA have finally settled on the structure for a new collective bargaining agreement to last through 2026.

Baseball is back: MLB, players agree on new CBA to salvage 162 ... (USA TODAY)

After more than three months, Major League Baseball and the players union agreed to a new deal to salvage a 162-game season.

The luxury-tax ceiling promised to be the sticking point in negotiations, and it did not disappoint. And the sides established a $50 milliona pool for high-achieving young players not yet eligible for arbitration. If by July 25 the union does not relent to an international draft by 2024, MLB will reattach draft-pick compensation and qualifying offers to free agents. "No agreement comes together until those two things play on in a way that you find common ground. Such a bonanza looked grim after MLB flexed its muscles with more cancellations Wednesday, wiping out four series for each team. That's a lot of baseball compressed from early April into November.

The cost, though, was rancor that cast both owners and players as money obsessed. Players think that too low of a threshold and too high of a rate acts tantamount to a salary cap, which the union fought off with a 7 1/2-month strike in 1994-95. Players can begin reporting Friday, with training cut to about 28 days rather than the usual 42 for pitchers and catchers. Players had fumed for years about the deal that expired Dec. 1, which saw payrolls decline 4% in 2021 compared to the last full season, back to their 2015 level. a person familiar with the balloting said, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no announcement was authorized. Owners planned to vote on the five-year agreement at 6 p.m., and approval was expected.

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association reached a new collective bargaining agreement Thursday afternoon, finally halting a 99-day ...

"The way the process of collective bargaining is designed to work under the statute, it's really driven by two things: time and economic leverage," Manfred said. "We built some processes into this agreement where we're gonna be interacting more regularly with players on topics like the international draft and rule changes. The league imposed another deadline for Tuesday, this time for a full 162-game season, and finally agreed to higher competitive balance thresholds, seemingly carving a path for a deal. "There were spots where I was concerned we were going to miss a lot of time," Manfred told Rogers. "Whenever you think you get going and it looks like you can make an agreement and then it doesn't happen, that's concerning. Their first core-economics proposal came in May, but the league didn't counter until August. Manfred instituted a lockout on Dec. 2, stating hopes that it would trigger accelerated bargaining, and the two sides went 43 days without talking. I respect them, and I respect the input that we've received from them during this process. Under the new CBA, minimum salaries will begin at $700,000 in 2022 -- an unprecedented 23% increase from the prior year -- and rise to $780,000 for the final year in 2026. "Our union endured the second-longest work stoppage in its history to achieve significant progress in key areas that will improve not just current players' rights and benefits, but those of generations to come," Clark said in a statement. An international draft, a component that added another layer of difficulty to negotiations on Wednesday, could be implemented as early as 2024. Sort of the way the process of collective bargaining works sometimes, but I do apologize for it. Twenty-six of the 38 union leaders voted in favor of a five-year CBA that saw its members make significant gains with regard to minimum salaries and the competitive balance tax threshold, among other areas. With the end of the second-longest work stoppage in the game's history, the market officially opened, paving the way for trades and free-agent signings.

CBA talks implode as MLB issues another failed ultimatum (Bless You Boys)

It seemed that a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between Major League Baseball's (MLB) players and owners was getting close again on Wednesday ...

A group of Latin players flew to the site of the negotiations to put a stop to it. We could speculate that the impacts on trainers and coaches who coached and represented many current major league players could be substantial, and it’s not surprising that the players would object to a sudden decision to implement it. The players offer, for what it’s worth, was that the two sides continue to talk about the draft and free agent compensation and if they could not agree by November, things would be restored to status quo, just as they were last year. Players have been adamantly opposed to an international draft every time the subject comes up, so that they were still opposed in this round was no surprise. The IFA draft discussion could be postponed to allow some time for considering the consequences. The players are often criticized for not standing up for minor league players who receive wages below the poverty line. As things snowballed, the international draft became the focus of negotiations, to the point where owners issued an ultimatum to the players. The owners said that they would be delivering a complete counter offer, but instead issued the ultimatum, refusing to discuss any other subject until the international draft had been settled. MLB had proposed the elimination of free agent compensation in 2017, if the players would agree to an international draft. It seemed an idea that was probably scrapped for this CBA until the owners raised it again as a point of contention. On December 1, 2021, just a day before the prior agreement expired, MLB was due to present a counter offer to avoid their threatened lockout of the players. It seemed that a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between Major League Baseball’s (MLB) players and owners was getting close again on Wednesday afternoon.

“It’s just a very democratic process and some of these sorts of things take some time. The deal brings major changes that include expansion of the DH to the National League, increasing the postseason from 10 teams to 12, advertisements on uniforms, a balanced schedule that reduces intradivision play starting in 2023 and measures aimed to incentivize competition and decrease rebuilding, such as an amateur draft lottery. Tax rates remain unchanged at the initial threshold, second and third thresholds. Players’ pictures that had been scrubbed from the league’s website were restored. MLB Lockout Tracker: Sides come to agreement on international draft (Phillies Nation)

MLB self-imposed a Feb. 28 deadline for a deal to get done in order to both start the regular season on March 31 and play 162 games. The MLBPA is seeking a $238 million tax in 2022 that rises to $263 million at the end of the deal in 2026. The sense is that there is a slight chance the two sides could come to an agreement in time to start the season on March 31, but the sides still remain far apart on key issues. Tuesday, Feb. 22: MLB and the MLBPA met for a second consecutive day. MLB’s luxury tax rate proposal currently stands at 45% for the first tier, 62% for the second ($20 to $40 million over) and 95% for the third ($40 million or more). MLB’s current first luxury tax threshold stands at $214 million for the 2022 season. For a deal to be agreed upon, MLB will have to both significantly lower its luxury tax rate proposals on all three levels and significantly increase its proposed luxury tax thresholds. Players want a $245 million tax threshold for 2022 andprevious reports have indicatedthat anything below $230 million is a non-starter for the union. MLB’s current proposal is a $220 million tax that increases to $230 in 2026. Per Drellich, MLB is proposing a 2022 luxury tax of $228 million, which would increase to $238 million in 2026. According to multiple reports, the league has made a set of comprehensive proposals. After the two sides began making progress in the later hours, the deadline was extended to Wednesday. Now, service time and pay are a big issue moving forward in negotiations. Thursday, March 10: According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, MLB and the MLBPA have reached an agreement on the international draft and qualifying offer.

How MLB, players can make 2022 the Year of the Fan after ugly ... (Sporting News)

Major League Baseball has spent the past few months force-feeding its fans what felt like a never-ending stream of reasons to resent their favorite sport.

The time between innings and between pitches can feel excruciating on TV, but at the ballpark they just feel like like part of the flow (well, to an extent). Your fans — the ones who stuck around — deserve at least that much. Every single day, baseball authenticates dozens and dozens of baseballs used during the game. A ball that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. smashed off the center-field wall has a scar. In the ballpark, too, but creating engagement on social — Twitter, Instagram, TikTok — is important. For some people — check my mentions — it’s all about the “greedy players” and nothing will move them from that belief, so it’s up to the players to help fix this. The sights and sounds of a ballpark just hit different. And, yeah, it’s great that MLB finally started to move toward the players and that the MLBPA took more steps toward the middle. So, MLB, let’s be liberal with free trials and passes that allow fans to at least sample the streaming services. Line the baseline with players signing cards and baseballs and hats and shirts and posters and whatever. Not just from the people getting the autographs, but from Cabrera himself. Lip service about the importance of “our fans” — especially by commissioner Rob Manfred — was followed over and over by evidence that fans just didn’t rate very high on the negotiation priority list, if they were even there at all.

Milwaukee will play its season opener April 7 against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field and its home opener April 14 against the St. Louis Cardinals.

"I expect in the next day or two we’ll get clarity on all that, and then we’ll announce how we’ll be able to fit those six games in. Finding three games to put at home during the rest of the package is a little more complicated; you’re dealing with travel logistics, finding open dates and making sure that we can squeeze them in. "A lot of fans who bought for the original March 31 opener, those tickets will be honored, and if they can make it on April 14 we will welcome them," Schlesinger said. "The one thing (team principal owner Mark Attanasio) has always made clear is, he wants to win. "Yeah, I don’t see those happening simply because logistics-wise, we set those up when we were opening at home," he said. But again, until we know the details, until David presents Mark with potential (deals), it's very speculative. But I think with all that our fans have been through, this is just one small gesture of many that we’re going to do to welcome them back and embrace them." "It’s somewhat serendipitous that our home opener is 414 day, which obviously has a lot of real meaning to the people of Milwaukee. "I think that we can add three games to the end of the schedule relatively easily. The Brewers' Cactus League schedule was released late Friday afternoon. "We have good inventory," he said. "All systems are go," Milwaukee Brewers vice president of business operations Rick Schlesinger said Friday morning.

MLB lockout ends as MLBPA, owners reach CBA agreement: Five ... (CBS sports.com)

Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association reached a deal for a new collective bargaining agreement on Thursday, ending the league's ...

Numbers appeared close but there was a report that MLB wanted the MLBPA to drop a grievance filed over the 2020 season. So, right now, if the board is against, they need two-thirds of the player reps to vote for the proposal for it to pass. (The owners had pushed for a 14-team format.) The exact details are unknown, but the league had resisted the "ghost win" approach used in Japan and South Korea. After that got sorted this morning, the league has reportedly asked for the MLBPA to drop a grievance from 2020. Two on-field rules from the last two seasons, seven-inning doubleheaders and a runner on second base to begin extra innings, are not part of this new deal. The new CBA not only raised the league minimum by more than $100,000 (it was $575.5K in 2021), it introduced the pre-arbitration bonus pool, funded at $50 million. (The union had alleged the league opted to play fewer games than it could have.) (The previous record belonged to the 1990 lockout that lasted 32 days.) The way MLB's compensation system is set up, players who have fewer than three years of service time are essentially guaranteed to make no more than the league minimum, no matter how well they play. The union voted to approve a new proposal by a 26-12 margin (a simple majority, or 20 votes, was all that was required for the new agreement to pass, but it's notable that the eight members of the executive subcommittee all voted no). The owners ratified the new five-year CBA on Thursday night, voting 30-0 in favor. The two sides then met here and there, but it wasn't until late February when they began to meet multiple times, in-person, on a day-to-day basis. The owners, for their part, prioritized an expanded postseason, an international draft, and the power to make rule changes, including, potentially, installing a pitch clock and larger bases, as well as restricting defensive positioning.

MLB players vote to end lockout, salvaging 162-game season (fortworthbusiness.com)

Players have voted to accept Major League Baseball's latest offer for a new labor deal, paving the way to end a 99-day lockout,

Players think that too low of a threshold and too high of a rate acts tantamount to a salary cap, which the union fought off with a 7 1/2-month strike in 1994-95. The deal came at a cost, though, with years of public rancor again casting both owners and players as money obsessed. Players had fumed for years about the deal that expired Dec. 1, which saw payrolls decline 4% in 2021 compared to the last full season, back to their 2015 level. Commissioner Rob Manfred had set a Tuesday deadline for a deal that would preserve a 162-game schedule along with full pay and service time required for players to reach free agency. MLB sent the players an offer Thursday and gave them until 3 p.m. to accept in order to play a full season. The deal also will set off a rapid-fire round of free agency.

The Seattle Mariners and the rest of MLB have work to do. All 18 non-playoff clubs will enter a lottery for the top six picks. Teams that promote top prospects to the Opening Day roster will also be eligible to receive draft picks with Top 3 ROY or Top 5 MVP/CY finish.— Mark Feinsand (@Feinsand) March 10, 2022 top prospects who finish 1st or 2nd in their league's Rookie of the Year voting will receive a full year of service. The MLB Players Association has agreed on a 26-12 vote to approve the final proposal after 99 days of locked out negotiations, and now awaits an expected mere formality of receiving 23 of 30 votes from MLB’s owners. How this exactly manifests is confusing and tying award voting to compensation is a bit suspect, but hopefully will improve service time manipulation to some degree.

MLB lockout: What new collective bargaining agreement means for ... (SB Nation)

The lockout is finally over. Now it's time to look towards what the next few years may have in store for Major League Baseball.

This time around, baseball simply staying active and in the daily sports conversation is a win for both MLB and the MLBPA. There’s still plenty to be fixed with the sport, but at least now the best part of the sport will be able to have all of their talents on display during this spring, summer, and fall. The issue of the International Draft has been kicked down the road and the players and owners will talk about that in the middle of this season. This will probably be one of the more fascinating facets of the new CBA to keep an eye on going forward. Run differential could potentially play a huge role in baseball and perhaps this now means that we won’t have to hear about why swinging for the fences with a 3-0 count in the middle of a blowout is a cardinal sin against the unwritten rules of baseball. The other four will have to do battle in the Wild Card Series and in order to make sure that the first round starts on time, tiebreaker games have been eliminated. Our long, national nightmare is over and by the time April 7 rolls around, bats are going to be cracking and mitts will be popping for Opening Day. On top of that, baseball’s first labor stoppage since the strike in 1994 and the second-longest work stoppage in MLB history will result in zero regular season games lost.
