Your, my, and our Iowa Hawkeyes (22-9, 12-8) tip-off their Big Ten Tournament campaign with the Northwester Wildcats (15-15, 7-13) Thursday afternoon in ...
Buie was in that group of players that barely played in Iowa’s 21-point drubbing of the Wildcats in February. He took two shots in the game, missed both, and also missed his two free throw attempts. Todd Lickliter definitely never won a game in the event. Tom Davis never won a game in the event. Berry was 5-10 from 3 in the first game, scoring 19 points, while Young chipped in 10 points and 7 rebounds. He didn’t record a stat in any other category, so that was a big missing piece in the first game. Iowa won the lone meeting with Wildcats, leading by as many as many as 30 points in an 82-61 win on February 28 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Keegan Murray led the way with 26 points and 18 rebounds, while Jordan Bohannon and Connor McCaffery punctuated Senior Night with 18 and 17 points, respectively.
COACH FRAN McCAFFERY: Yeah, we can't play much better than we played tonight, obviously. Everything was clicking, our offense was really good.
That group, you know, Harper, Geo, McConnell, Mulcahy. I think Cliff's one of the most underrated players in the country, probably one of the most improved players in the country. So that's always a challenge, but it's also exciting and I think those guys have just kind of stayed the course and believed in themselves and continued to get better. I will say this, I have a tremendous amount of respect for that program and the job that Steve has done. COACH FRAN McCAFFERY: I think the thing that's impressive is we had a lot of different guys making them, it wasn't one or two guys and that's, obviously, what you want as a coach. I felt like we had a team that was deep, I thought we had a lot of different weapons, I thought we had -- we've got length, we've got depth, we had enough shooting, we had enough veteran leadership. That was kind of a struggle for me early on in the Big Ten season and just staying on the floor as much as I can. We just have a lot of pieces that are flowing together and we're going to continue to try to stay together the rest of the season. KEEGAN MURRAY: Yeah, I think it's a team we only played once this year and we all felt it's a game should have won at their place. I'm wondering when the bracket comes out, you see the next opponent on the docket, are you excited to get another crack at them and take that taste out of your mouth and get another crack at them? The walk-ons come in, they're able to get a chance to play in front of their families and be a part of this Big Ten Conference Tournament experience. So we felt like we needed to play with the kind of effort we played with tonight in order to win. KEEGAN MURRAY: Yeah, I think it's kind of -- we have that a couple of times this season.
Iowa guard Payton Sandfort, right, shoots over Northeastern guard Quirin Emanga in the first half of an NCAA college basketball game at the Big Ten Conference ...
Iowa broke all of the records, breaking the tournament single-game records for made 3s (19), field goals (43), points scored (112), and margin of victory (36).
I mean of course Iowa can’t sustain that kind of offense for a second game, but damn – that Northwestern team was 50th in Kenpom adjusted defense and Iowa eviscerated them. He had Michigan a spot ahead of Rutgers in the pecking order for the last four byes, and IU right on their heels as the first team out, though that order could shake up a bit given IU’s win over Michigan in the first game of the Thursday session. Usually I want that extra rest, but Iowa got what was essentially a tune-up game with the Wildcats and the opportunity to find their groove again after that difficult Illinois loss. They’re fun in a weird way and managed to rescue this season after a trio of terrible losses early in the year to DePaul, Lafayette, and UMass. That was one of the last times Iowa really got punked in that stat column, as they were outrebounded by 11. I just checked 4 different mock drafts and he was nowhere to be found (Keegan’s floating between 5 and 8 in the first round). That disastrous foul call by Courtney Green on Keegan with 2 seconds left secured the head-to-head for the Scarlett Knights and ended up being the difference-maker for the double-bye. For some reason, Joe Lunardi still has Rutgers as a bubble-ish team (right side of the bubble, but still bubble), and I can’t understand why. For comparison, Michigan scored 69 points (nice) in the first game of the session. Rutgers, who took the 4-seed and the last double-bye on the back of a hot stretch of play in early-to-mid February, beating Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin (away), and Illinois all consecutively to rescue their NCAA chances. Iowa broke all of the records, breaking the tournament single-game records for made 3s (19), field goals (43), points scored (112), and margin of victory (36). It’s a game where literally everything clicked for Iowa. Keegan dominance? Check. Defense slipped for a portion of the first half?
Iowa basketball showed no mercy from beyond the arc on Thursday against Northwestern, setting the Big Ten Tournament for made 3-pointers.
Iowa made eight of its 13 attempts from deep, shattering the previous conference tournament record for 3-pointers in a game. Iowa made 11 of its 16 3-point attempts in the first half, too. That hot shooting continued in the second.
Senior forward, Pete Nance, played his last collegiate basketball game as a Northwestern Wildcat. Falling to the Iowa Hawkeyes, 76-112, the 'Cats Big Ten ...
With slim chances of making it to the big dance, Nance reflected on his time with Northwestern basketball. The first half ended with the ‘Cats in a 33-point deficit to the Hawkeyes, 31-64. From there, the Hawkeyes continued to pursue the ‘Cats. The game ended with a shot outside the paint by Iowa redshirt senior, Austin Ash, whose team's score was well into the hundreds. The ‘Cats had another run late in the second with five minutes left on the clock. Even with the ‘Cats shooting consistency, Iowa continued to go shot-for-shot with them. Murray went three-for-three on field goal attempts and showed out with a breakaway dunk just four minutes into the first half.

“With the Murrays, with Rebraca, with Patrick McCaffery, with Perkins — those guys are in there on the boards. Your support helps provide the necessary resources and training to continue our mission. “I think it was simply just recognition that we had to do better,” Fran McCaffery added. “What you’re seeing now is a much more confident Tony. He’s able to do a lot off the dribble and be confident with not only his scoring, but he’s doing a really good job of finding other people. Said he felt good, but he seemed to be a little fatigued. “He ran out of gas a little bit. The sophomore only scored six points, but grabbed four rebounds and dished out a career-high six assists while playing standout defense on the perimeter. He’s always been a great scorer, but now he’s realizing he can use that to his advantage and help really open up other people’s games.” Iowa’s 12th-year head coach also called Perkins one of the best rebounding guards he’s ever been around. “You show up in this tournament, whoever you’re playing against, you’d better be ready,” Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery said. Over the final 13 minutes of the loss, the Hawkeyes scored just eight points. It’s just putting pieces together, putting together a scouting report, and getting reading for a really physical team.”

Northwestern moves ahead to the second round of the Big Ten tournament to face off against Iowa.
Redshirt junior Ryan Young added 10 points for the 'Cats. They were just shy of outscoring the Hawkeyes in the second half (46-44), but the rebounding margin (50-35) is what hurt Northwestern in this regular season game. Forward Pete Nance was held to just four points — his lowest contribution for a single game during the regular season.
INDIANAPOLIS — Payton Sandfort hadn't seen the box score. “I'm sure it's pretty absurd,” the Iowa freshman forward said. The numbers from Iowa's 112-76 win ...
“I’ve definitely been marking this game since we saw it on our side of the bracket,” he said. We feel like anybody we show up to play against, we can beat them. “We saw the starters smoking them,” said Sandfort, who had three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points. “Anybody you show up to play against can beat you. The last couple games, I feel like in the first half we've been getting on runs, our defense has been really good. “Those guys, they're playing at a really high level,” Collins said. The Hawkeyes get fourth seed Rutgers in Friday’s 1 p.m. quarterfinal. “I just think early on I feel like we're moving the ball really well, especially at the start of games, and that's kind of fed into different guys getting easy looks,” said forward Keegan Murray, who led Iowa with 26 points in just 20 minutes. The Hawkeyes had a 45-18 rebounding edge — 16 offensive rebounds led to 16 second-chance points. “You show up in this tournament, whoever you play against, you'd better be ready,” he said. “We came in firing. Everybody was hot.”
