And that’s the difference.” “The trainer said he can’t move,” said Wright. “He didn’t even come out for the start of the game. “I mean, it’s no surprise to us,” said Wright. “We weren’t disappointed in our play at all. And we just said let’s just see what he looks like.” He wasn’t on the bench at the beginning of the game. I don’t know what the time was, but whenever he appeared I just put him in the game. And I wouldn’t change it for anything.” “That took place here and it took place at their place. And we’re just going to gut it out each and every game.” “We just toughed it out, said Wright. “Our upperclassmen were great down the stretch, Collin made some big plays. The Johnnies tried to answer with a desperate half-court heave, but it was off the mark. They gave me that confidence and I was able to knock it down.”
Seton Hall lost to UConn in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals and will now await their NCAA Tournament destination on Selection Sunday.
He and the Pirates will now have a week off before playing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. Myles Cale scored a team-high 17 points and Kadary Richmond added 14, but the rest of the offense never showed up as the Pirates (21-10) saw their six-game winning streak snapped. Couple days off, Selection Sunday, it’s not going to be a bad thing.” No. 1 Providence will face No. 4 Creighton in the first Big East semifinal at 6:30 p.m. It’s the third time since 2016 that the top four seeds have advanced to the semifinals (2019, 22). “I’m proud of these guys,” Pirates coach Kevin Willard said. The No. 3 Huskies took out the No. 6 Pirates, 62-52, at Madison Square Garden to advance to Friday’s semifinal showdown with No. 2 Villanova, which survived a massive scare before fending off No. 7 St. John’s, 66-65.
The 2022 Big East men's basketball tournament got underway Wednesday, but the conference's top five teams weren't in action...
Villanova's talented backcourt, featuring senior guard Collin Gillespie (16.3 points per game) and junior Justin Moore (15.3), will likely help the Wildcats put up impressive numbers in this contest. Take the over in this quarterfinal matchup. The Bluejays won both contests, as they notched a 75-69 victory in double overtime in Jan. 1 and then beat the Golden Eagles 83-82 on Feb. 20. The over/under line is set at 142.5 total points, and Creighton and Marquette exceeded that number in each of their first two meetings. Providence earned the No. 1 seed in the Big East tournament by going 14-3 in conference play this season. And with the stakes raised, there's a decent chance that the teams could go to overtime again. Butler snapped a five-game losing streak with its first-round win over No. 8-seeded Xavier on Wednesday, and it should give the Friars another challenge. In the second meeting between the teams, Butler took Providence to overtime before falling 71-70 on its home court. These teams both received byes into the quarterfinals, and they are set to face off for the third time this season. No. 2 Villanova (-5.5) vs. But things are about to pick up in a big way. The 2022 Big East men's basketball tournament got underway Wednesday, but the conference's top five teams weren't in action.
Al Durham's late 3-pointer from the left corner sealed the Providence victory; the team advances to a semifinal on Friday evening against Creighton.
Providence improved to 15-2 this season in games decided by single digits and 11-2 in games decided by five points or less. “I couldn’t be more excited to play here in this incredible tournament,” Cooley said. “So we just pride ourselves on the defensive end.” It was impossible to find any offensive flow and the 31-31 tie into the locker room felt appropriate. Providence (25-4) was rusty off a nine-day break and looked in some trouble throughout most of the second half. They managed to tie the game on three different occasions before Durham put his team over the hump. “It was a little rough there for a second but the last shot went in,” Durham said. The two teams combined for 26 personals and shot 35 free throws prior to the break. “We didn’t do a lot of things great but we did enough to win,” Providence head coach Ed Cooley said. A.J. Reeves made an extra pass from the wing and Durham — who was 0-for-7 from the field to that point — hit nothing but net. Providence faced a 59-58 deficit with a minute to play and found Durham for an open look in front of his own bench. It was his first make from deep since late January and it came at the ideal time.

"But I think if you take away some of the plays they had in transition and then some of the drives we gave up from the top, I thought our guys did a nice job on defense. "That's kind of why we went on a run. Wanting to play a perfect game." "If we do those things we can be a really good defensive team. The Bluejays converted eight of their first nine shots to start the second half and finished 18 for 27 (66.7%) in the final 20 minutes. And I think today, for whatever reason, we're in the Big East tournament, our guys really, really wanted to win.
With win in the BIG EAST tournament finals, Connecticut clinched 20th conference tournament title. Villanova projected in NCAA tournament.
In addition to UConn’s automatic bid by winning the conference tournament title, Creighton is also projected to be part of the field. As members of the conference from 1982 to 2013, UConn won 37 conference titles (19 regular season, 18 tournament). When they returned to the league last season, the program picked up where it left off, going undefeated in league play and winning the regular season and tournament titles. They won the BIG EAST tournament in 1986, 1987 and most recently 2003. The BIG EAST Conference tournament came to a close on Monday and with that, the conference season is over. In the first half, the Huskies held Villanova to 8-of-27 field goal shooting (29.6%) and 2-of-11 (18.2%) from behind the arc. Ultimately, UConn’s physicality and depth overwhelmed the Wildcats in a 70-40 win.
Providence (25-4) will meet fourth seeded Creighton, which outsed No. 5 Marquette 74-63, in the semifinals Friday at 6:30.
“Nate was a monster the whole night,” Cooley said. Tellingly, the Friars’ hardware included the top sixth man (Jared Bynum) and the conference’s coach of the year (Cooley), relying upon a well-coached and disciplined group to weather any obstacle it faced. Minaya was quiet for much of the matinee and went 2-for-5 for six points, but he didn’t need his jump shot to save the Friars from ignominy. The formula worked again. He erased an 0-for-18 skid and the deficit, giving the Friars a 61-59 bulge they would not relinquish. “He’s made some big shots for us the whole time.
It was just a tease. This game. This season. St. John's dream of running the table in the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden ended at a raucous ...
“I mean, it was a charge. It couldn’t get a stop. It led to a Villanova free throw, but more importantly it contributed to Alexander’s time on the bench in the second half. “It was a charge,” the coach fumed. It couldn’t convert. “Just like tonight.” It was 44-30 at the time, 14:05 remained. When he checked back in, 3:40 later, the lead was down to two. I feel like the guys, we gave it our all.” Still, St. John’s punched back, retook the lead on Stef Smith’s three-point play with 2:08 left, and had the ball up one with under a half-minute left. It was all going so right for the seventh-seeded Johnnies. They were up 44-27. The dream of running the table here this week seemed possible for large stretches of the evening.

After a crazy opening night of action, here's a look at the four games on tap for a loaded day of hoops at Madison Square Garden.
It wasn’t pretty, but Seton Hall will look to shake off its mistakes and nurse some injuries from a 57-53 opening round win over conference winless Georgetown. The Pirates enter with six-straight wins and appear to have turned a corner after some turbulence in January. They haven’t lost since Feb. 16, when they fell to UConn on the road. UConn is the only team that has two All-Big East first-teamers this season, with leading scorer and clutch guard R.J. Cole, as well as sophomore standout Adama Sanogo. Tyrese Martin, who averaged 13.4 points and 7.6 rebounds, will play like he has something to prove, after not even earning an honorable mention. UConn doesn’t plan on stopping short this time around, especially after losing in the Big East Tournament semifinals last season. Posh Alexander was also a non-factor in the first meeting, but was out with an injury for the rematch at the Garden. Aaron Wheeler may have caught them by surprise, so they’ll be better prepared to not allow a 31-point outing. Its uptempo style and high-pressure defense will look to disorient the ‘Cats. Mike Anderson aims for 40 minutes of hell, it hasn’t happened against the ‘Cats yet — maybe just 8-10 minutes — but it also depends on which St. John’s team shows up on the court. With Bryce Aiken out and Kadary Richmond hurt, it’ll be up to senior veterans Jared Rhoden and Myles Cale to set the tone. The Wildcats may have swept the Johnnies, but there were a couple of scares. Providence will have Al Durham back after being out last week with a sports hernia, another weapon alongside All-Big East second team selections Jared Bynum, who was also Big East Sixth Man of the Year, and Nate Watson, who tortured the Bulldogs in both meetings this season. The Wildcats led comfortably by 20 in their last meeting at Madison Square Garden, only to have the Red Storm seemingly come out of nowhere with a 23-6 run in the final minutes of the game — with a shot to even tie and potentially force overtime. Marquette may have fallen short in two close meetings, but it might get the last laugh on Thursday. All-Big East second team selection Ryan Hawkins and Big East Defensive Player of the Year Ryan Kalkbrenner will look to limit him once again, but it’s hard to imagine a player of Lewis’ caliber getting shut down once again. The Bulldogs were slumping entering the Big East Tournament, losing each of their last five games to end the regular season.
ACC tournament has struggled to find an audience in Brooklyn. The Big East tournament — celebrating 40 years at Madison Square Garden — continues to be a ...
It felt part like a watch party for a game and part like a celebration of the past. In Brooklyn, meanwhile, the ACC tournament feels like an awkward gesture to appease the schools that used to play in the Garden every year around this time. The Big East and New York City, meanwhile, don’t feel the need for a similar sort of formal designation. There’s an irony, now, in the dynamic between the ACC and Big East tournaments, which are happening not all that far from each other but in some ways are a world apart. When Maryland left the ACC for the Big Ten, which league did the ACC turn toward to find a replacement? Pollone, a journalist with NBC News, was also sitting in the upper deck, in a section overlooking one of the baskets, and he and a friend were the only two people in that particular section. It’s not a stretch to suggest there’d have been more of them for a Big East Tournament game in the Garden, given the school’s history there. Beyond that, though, the game mattered because in New York City the Big East Tournament still matters. Meanwhile, the Big East Tournament, much like the ACC’s, is not what it was. Syracuse fans, of which we have been told there are many in and around New York, didn’t even come Wednesday to see their team in the ACC tournament. The ACC’s problem in Brooklyn goes deeper than match-ups, and the relative lack of attractive ones in what has been one of the conference’s worst seasons in memory. Thursday began the quarterfinal round, and featured the debuts of Duke and North Carolina, which both finished in the top four of the regular season standings and thus earned a double-bye.

3/2/2022 3/2/2022 2/26/2022 2/26/2022 - Creighton's assist leader is Ryan Nembhard with 4.4 per game. 2/20/2022
On Thursday, March 10th, the Marquette Golden Eagles and Creighton Bluejays will face off in the quarterfinal round of the Big East Tournament.
Still, they have quality pieces that can score when they need it, like Ryan Hawkins with 14.3 PPG or Ryan Kalkbrenner with 12.7 PPG. The team depends on their starters more than most in the Big East, with just 6 bench points in the past three games for Creighton (where they have gone 1-2). With question marks as to who will produce off the bench, the starters look to keep this Creighton team moving in a positive direction without Nembhard. The Bluejays (20-10, 12-7) wished they had some of that depth. That is not meant to undermine Marquette and what Shaka Smart has done with Marquette in just his first year. It is already pretty difficult for what I would call evenly-matched teams to beat or be beaten by the other team three times. The Golden Eagles (19-11, 11-8) have been a legitimate threat for every conference opponent this season. Darryl Morsell averaged 13.3 PPG and was also able to distribute the ball in place of Tyler Kolek at times with 2.6 APG. Tyler Kolek, the starting point-guard, is averaging 5.7 APG, Greg Elliott and Kam Jones are averaging 7.5 PPG with three-point percentages around 40%, and other major pieces (Kur Kuath, Olivier-Maxence Prosper, Oso Ighodaro) are adding depth to this team.
Creighton men's basketball held off a late Marquette charge as the Jays defeated the Golden Eagles to advance to the Big East tournament semifinals.
"We played them on a night when I'm not sure the Golden State Warriors could have went in there and won that night," McDermott said. Creighton shot just 33% from the field in the first half but led 29-26 at halftime. "Since (Ryan) Nembhard went out, he's really done a great job at the point guard spot. "And I thought we got better at defending that small lineup as time went on." "I just told them in the locker room, I take timeouts when my team looks unsure, scared or panicked. It looked like Thursday would go down to the wire, too.

The 2022 Big East Tournament continues on Thursday with the quarterfinals and here are the best bets to make, including one for St. John's vs. Villanova.
The Johnnies, meanwhile, are a feisty underdog and are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six as betting ‘dogs – with that lone push coming against ‘Nova a month ago. St. John’s boasts the nation’s fastest tempo while Villanova ranks 344th in pace (per KenPom metrics). One team loves to push it on offense on every possession and the other prefers to slow it down as much as possible. In fact, the Johnnies played Villanova tough in this building a month ago before ultimately losing by six. They won both regular-season matchups over the Red Storm and Vegas is predicting a similar outcome for this game. Under head coach Shaka Smart, the Golden Eagles feature a unique brand of basketball by scoring fast in transition on offense and then slowing teams down and playing tight defense on the other end. We’re talking about the difference between a couple shots and maybe the seeds are flip-flopped in this Big East Tournament. However, St. John’s is coming in hot after eclipsing 90 points in yesterday’s first-round win with All-Big East First Teamer Julian Champagnie leading the way with 26 of his own. Meanwhile, Creighton is 66th in the NET and may barely squeak into the Big Dance as a bubble team. With Nembhard sidelined, the Bluejays’ offense simply isn’t as dangerous and their depth is a legit concern. The big issue for Creighton is they’re playing without starting point guard Ryan Nembhard, who’s out for the season with a wrist injury. Despite being seeded lower, Marquette enters as a 2.5-point favorite with a 142.5 over/under. Though the Bluejays won both regular-season meetings, the Golden Eagles are clearly viewed by Vegas and nationally as the better team right now on a neutral court. Marquette lost by one on the road in February and in double-overtime at home two months ago.
The Huskies open up tournament play with a matchup against the Pirates in the Big East Tournament Quarterfinals.
Richmond had a career high 27 points in the first game of the season against the Huskies, scoring on any and every defender UConn threw his way. With the injuries and illnesses possibly holding Hawkins and Polley out of the game, the door is once again open for Jalen Gaffney to make a legitimate difference. Both games this season were competitive — UConn lost by three in overtime on the road in their first game back from a COVID-19 pause, but was able to beat the Pirates in the rematch at Gampel Pavilion by a margin of five about a month later. UConn had a bye from receiving one of the top three seeds, and Seton Hall just beat the winless-in-conference Georgetown Hoyas to get to this position. Both squads come into this game hot, with UConn winning seven of their last eight, and Seton Hall riding a six game win streak. Seton Hall finally broke through and took the lead with 40.3 seconds left on a deep 3-pointer from Jamir Harris and never looked back, closing things out to secure an ugly 57-53 win.
Good morning college basketball world! Welcome to our college basketball odds series, which includes our Butler-Providence prediction, odds, and pick.
Center Nate Watson will be a name that Butler has to find a way to limit his scoring chances, as the Friars big man has accounted for at least seven games of 20+ scoring performances, including 22 points in his last game against the Bulldogs. As extremely challenging as it is for any team to defeat another three times throughout a season no matter their prestige, Providence has to put the pressure on the Butler half-court offense and force them to turn the ball over, something that Butler has limited for a majority of the college basketball season. The Bulldogs do not have the athletes and amount of statistical production to give Providence a run for their money in 2022. Two of their four losses have come against Nova in hard-fought matchups, and it is difficult to find a more well-balanced contending team than the Friars. During their contest against Butler on Jan. 23rd, the Friars had their way from behind the arc, scorching the Bulldogs with a 41% mark from deep. Entering Thursday’s big-time matchup, Butler is hoping that they got their shooting woes out of the way and to ride the momentum from Wednesday’s dramatic overtime win against the Friars. The Bulldogs shot only 27% from downtown and will need to be more effective in that category if they want any sliver of a chance. In this Big East showdown between the Butler Bulldogs and the Providence Friars, the stakes are high and the betting odds are in play! However, the Musketeers underestimated the Bulldogs’ powerful bite during round one of the Big East Tournament, as Butler outlasted their conference foe in a game that saw both teams shoot the rock rather poorly from three-point land and from the floor in general.

Anthony Dabbundo previews how to bet two quarterfinal matchups in the Big East tournament: Providence vs. Butler and Marquette vs. Creighton.
Creighton not only has the best interior defense in the Big East, but the Blue Jays are ninth in the entire country at protecting the rim. They finished the season 1-2 with losses to Providence and Seton Hall and now have a difficult task offensively to create without him. Both Marquette and Creighton have faded a bit down the stretch of the season for different reasons. Both teams finished the season as generally pretty overrated based on ShotQuality and other metrics. The Friars offense is excellent in transition based on the metrics, but when they tend to struggle, it usually comes in the halfcourt. Those are major reasons that the Friars are good in close games, but they have not been great at covering big numbers as favorites in the league.
NEW YORK — In early February, Providence coach Ed Cooley likened his guard Al Durham to Yankees legend Mariano Rivera for his reliability in closing moments ...
But Justin Minaya, I feel like that name should be heard a lot and should be heard around the world a lot more.” “We didn’t do a lot of things great but we did enough to win,” Cooley said. And it was another unsung hero — Justin Minaya — who was also instrumental in helping the Friars survive. “Dunkin’ Donuts of the South. It’s down here in New York.” “I feel like he’s the best defender in the Big East. I feel he should be having national recognition about it. Bynum corralled the layup and made both free throws to effectively seal the win. Durham was 0-for-7 from the field prior to the shot, and hadn’t even made a 3-pointer since Jan. 30. Nate Watson — who finished with 26 points and seven rebounds — was the biggest reason the Friars were in it, though his four missed free throws nearly cost them. I hang my hat on that and never get too high, too low, because it’s just basketball at the end of the day.” Durham was never even guaranteed to play on Thursday. He’s been dealing with the injury for more than a month. Durham has been nursing a serious sports hernia injury for weeks, and he couldn’t buy a shot for the first 39 minutes of the Friars’ Big East tournament quarterfinal. It was just getting my feet up under me,” Durham said of the slow start.
Butler led 59-56 with less than 90 seconds left but could not put away the Friars, losing to them for a third time.
Bryce Golden scored all of his 13 points in the second half. The Bulldogs tried Golden, Bryce Nze and Ty Groce against him. The go-ahead basket was by Al Durham, a transfer from Indiana who sank a 3-pointer to push Providence in front 61-59 with 39 seconds left. The Bulldogs finished a 14-19 season for their most defeats in 32 years. Butler was trying to make Big East history by becoming the first team to make the semis with as many as 14 conference losses (6-14). The Bulldogs came from behind to beat Xavier 89-82 in overtime Wednesday. The 10th-ranked Friars (25-4) will play in a semifinal of the tournament at 6:30 p.m. Friday against the winner between No. 4 seed Creighton (20-10) and No. 5 seed Marquette (19-11).
Red Storm men's basketball team will meet Villanova on Thursday in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. inside Madison Square Garden. Produced by: redstormsports.com.
The Red Storm led by as many as 27 with seven minutes to go in the contest. The Red Storm responded with a 12-2 run of its own, tying the game at 14 on a Mathis 3-pointer with seven and a half gone in the game. The old record of three was set by Georgetown against Boston College on March 6, 1987. Two other Johnnies finished in double figures, as Stef Smith tallied 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. DePaul trimmed the St. John's lead to 17 in the opening minutes of the second half, but that was as close as the Blue Demons would get the rest of the way. That 12-2 spurt kick-started a larger 24-5 run for the Red Storm, as 10 straight points from the Red Storm made it 26-17 and forced a DePaul timeout with just over eight minutes remaining in the half.
