Reuniting star-producer Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy after their winning collaboration on "Free Guy," "The Adam Project" has the generic feel of a ...
Reynolds neatly sums up "The Adam Project's" modest ambitions in the production notes, saying that the concept "ticked every box for us." The Adam Project" recalls the past in cinematic terms by feeling conspicuously like what used to be dubbed a "B" movie, a genre that no longer has much traction in theaters. That's probably enough for Netflix coming off a success with Reynolds in "Red Notice," but like the film's plot, this amounts to rehashing history.
Time travelers Ryan Reynolds, Zoe Saldana and Mark Ruffalo star in Netflix's frothy but heartfelt family romp.
Catherine Keener does some compelling stuff as a villain who acts as the devil on the shoulder of her own younger self, even if her who-cares evil scheme is basically the plot of Back to the Future 2. Before the bad guys start shooting, The Adam Project explores how young Adam is dealing with the loss of his father. It's a neat example of taking a bit of plot logistics and making it part of the emotional theme. Probably the film's biggest strength is the amount of time it spends establishing the emotional stakes. There's a lot of fun to be had with his futuristic not-a-lightsaber weapon, though it all feels a bit low-stakes as the endless platoon of faceless bad guys just evaporate in bright colors like video game sprites turning into showers of coins. It's a fast-moving, family-friendly sci-fi romp reteaming Reynolds with director Shawn Levy after last year's hit Free Guy, and it has a lot of that same infectious video game energy.
Now, Reynolds returns to headline another star-studded roster — also including Zoe Saldana, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner and Catherine Keener — in “The Adam ...
By the time we get around to Adam’s late father (Ruffalo) — whoops, make that two dead relatives — any semblance of storytelling, beyond a simple point-A-to-point-B mission, is out the window. A textbook supervillain (Keener) has used time-travel technology to enrich herself at the expense of the rest of humanity; if Adam can get his ride up and running, he might be able to stop her before she gets started. And — because every lazy time-travel story needs at least one dead relative — he’d like to find and rescue his late wife (Saldana) in the process.
Ryan Reynolds plays a time traveling wise cracker in Shawn Levy's science fiction adventure.
Instead, “The Adam Project,” directed by Shawn Levy, might as well be called “The Ryan Reynolds Project.” Last summer, Levy and Reynolds teamed up under a different Hollywood juggernaut to deliver the clamorous video game flick “Free Guy.” This new movie (on Netflix) is a comparable package — noisy and formulaic, but still occasionally enjoyable. Early in “The Adam Project,” a pipsqueak asthmatic named Adam (Walker Scobell) and his golden retriever gallivant through the woods among shimmering falling debris. Add a few flying saucer chases, cook up a quickie solution to the grandfather paradox and this movie might have fallen at the intersection of “E. T.” and “Back to the Future.”
Starring Ryan Reynolds as a time traveling pilot and directed by Shawn Levy, the movie takes the old cliche about what you'd tell your younger self and adds PG- ...
Two and a half stars out of four. But before things get too real, adult Adam shows up in the past at their house and breaks all the known time travel rules when he accidentally runs into young Adam. This is a movie universe in which “Back to the Future 2” exists. This, I’m certain, is not part of the retro vibe they were going for but unfortunately they did. He’s quick-witted and unflappable, so it’s supposed to be jarring to cut back to see middle school Adam (Walker Scobell in his debut) as the little guy with the big mouth who is prone to getting in fights and losing. This is ultimately a film about boys and their dads. Reynolds and Scobell are a good match.
Good science fiction shouldn't be a sobfest. That's the No. 1 issue facing “The Adam Project,” a Ryan Reynolds vehicle on Netflix about a time traveler who ...
Although it is a soft PG-13, “The Adam Project” is stylistically geared toward 5-year-olds who aren’t going to watch a movie about time travel and frayed parent-child relationships. Big Adam’s goal was to hop back to 2018 to destroy time travel and prevent the death of his wife (Zoe Saldana) at the hands of Maya, an anodyne villain played by Catherine Keener. But he overshoots and lands in 2022. Letting us know Big Adam’s identity from the outset is a huge mistake because it gives the pair nowhere to go.
Ryan Reynolds is at his charming best in 'Adam Project'; also worth seeing is 'Turning Red' and 'Last Days of Ptolemy Grey,' with Samuel L. J Jackson.
Meise’s uncompromising feature is a thumb in the eye of governments stifling and corrupting the lives of those who don’t conform to an insidious standard. “Indemnity”: A few weeks back Liam Neeson starred in the lame actioner “Blacklight,” which aspired — and failed — to be a political thriller of merit. “Great Freedom”: Sebastian Meise’s damning indictment of an archaic and disgusting anti-gay 1871 German law that was on the books for way too long failed to land a spot in the best international feature category. Riccio’s story is filled with lovable Cape Cod eccentrics navigating the aftermath of the death of a gay man. New York son Martin (Jamie Effros) wants to be as efficient as he can in settling the estate, which includes a house that his dad shared with his lover (Norbert Leo Butz), a surly, unconventional landscaper left out of the will. Her trio of friends — all given unique personalities here — along with her overly controlling mother (voice of Sandra Oh), try to keep her in check, but hormonal challenges make that cumbersome to say the the least. “The Adam Project”: “Free Guy” (now available to stream on Disney+) was easily 2021’s most pleasant surprise, an utterly charming, kind-of deep comedy/thriller/romcom set in a video-game world that seemed as fresh as it was hilarious. Sadly bypassing movie theaters, the vibrantly animated 25th feature the Emeryville-based studio is an energetic deep plunge into the topsy-turvy pubescent mindset of 13-year-old Mei (voice of the East Bay’s Rosalie Chiang). She’s is a straight-A student and does everything just so; that is until she transforms into an enormous red panda when she can’t reign in her changing emotions. The murder of Ptolemy’s nephew propels the narrative forward, but it’s the exchanges between Ptolmey and street-smart teen Robyn (Fishback) that make you stay with the story, even when it lags at times. Author Sarah Alderson adapted her own novel, and the screenplay is made slick with clues, dead-ends and sinful temptations that don’t materialize to much. Topping that list are the exceptional performances from Samuel L. Jackson as the titular 91-year-old character who undergoes a radical, kind of shady treatment, to subvert his Alzheimer’s, and Dominique Fishback, playing the de facto caregiver and protector of a guy who has something buried underneath the floorboards. Reynolds pulls a “Back to the Future” in the opening moments as his character tries to unsnarl a past misdeed by meeting up with his younger self (Walker Scobell) who goes on to annoy the hell out of him.

Unfortunately, Netflix doesn’t offer a free trial and the film is not being released in theaters so Netflix is your only option to watch this flick. And Adam Project similarly expresses a kind of warmth and nostalgic feeling that were films that we grew up watching. Goonies,” Reynolds explains.“It just felt like it sort of harkened back to that kind of filmmaking and in the period we live in right now, it felt timely.” The Adam Project is being released on March 11. On this mission, both Adam’s also recruit, their dad (Ruffalo), who is dead in the time that Reynolds is from. Here is what you need to know about The Adam Project, its release date, and how you can watch it.

Its retro-futuristic stylings are kept in check by a laser-sharp script and some truly wonderful exchanges between Reynolds and his younger self, Scobell. Throw in a handful of epic action scenes and an almost-lightsaber and The Adam Project gives us a sci-fi epic that will really take you back. The Adam Project also tells a story about reconciling our past and really coming to terms with the life we’ve lived and the choices we’ve made. On the surface, The Adam Project is another attempt to hook us with nostalgia. and while future Adam may not admit that his energy stick weapon is a lightsaber, it really kind of is. He's the perfect young Adam to Reynolds' future Adam, and he’s definitely one to watch. Their back and forth is truly inspired, giving the film a humorous edge as future Adam rediscovers what a dork he used to be.
Reteaming with 'Free Guy' director Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds plays a time traveler who reconnects with his preteen self and late father.
Also because he’s cuddly Mark Ruffalo. He’s too pure to have any idea of the chaos that time-travel will unleash in the future, which Big Adam describes as like Terminator, on a good day. Back in 2022, 12-year-old Adam (Walker Scobell) is an ace gamer but also a small-for-his-age kid who’s not too intimidated by Ray (Braxton Bjerken), the middle-school thug who regularly beats him up, to respond with a mouthful of smart-assy sarcasm: “Who talks like that? We know Louis is not really a neglectful dad because he has the rumpled hair and distressed denim look of an artist on a Sundance fellowship. When young Adam is threatened with expulsion for the third time, his exasperated mom Ellie (Jennifer Garner, doing what she can with a thankless stock part) warns him: “Do you care about your future? The addition of T. S. Nowlin, Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin on the screenwriting team here presumably was intended to punch up the sci-fi elements and tailor the humor to Reynolds’ strengths. That’s as hard to buy as the film’s awkward mashup of time-travel mayhem with sudsy melodrama about a fractured family’s path to healing.
The production minds at Netflix clearly hold a massive affinity for nostalgia. Well, nostalgia for cinema from the 1980s and early 1990s.
But The Adam Project eventually wears thin in a VFX-heavy final confrontation that isn’t nearly as fun as the film’s world building. If The Adam Project has a flaw, then it’s that it must eventually provide closure to the time-travel narrative. The Adam Project stars Ryan Reynolds as Adam Reed, a future pilot who flies through a wormhole to travel into the past. As good as he is, Ruffalo’s role sometimes falls prey to the sillier aspects of the film’s time-travel plot. But trust in Ryan Reynolds. The audience doesn’t necessary need to fully subscribe to everything in the film because he does. Now add Shawn Levy’s (Stranger Things, Free Guy) The Adam Project to that ever-growing roster of thankfully fun throwback entertainment, marrying elements of such 1980s classics as E. T., Flight of the Navigator, Back To the Future, and even hints of Peggy Sue Got Married.

What makes “The Adam Project” unique is its grounded aesthetic, the woodsy, organic landscape of the Pacific Northwest offering a backdrop for the super high-tech futuristic weapons of invisible planes and light saber bow staffs. “The Adam Project” is clearly inspired by films like “Back to the Future” and “The Terminator,” both directly referenced in the script. “The Adam Project” is doubly quippy with the presence of Walker Scobell, who plays Young Adam to Reynold’s Big Adam, and matches him beat for beat when they meet in their respective timelines.

The Adam Project buries a heartwarming story under generic sci-fi tropes and Ryan Reynolds schtick.
To balance out The Adam Project’s sci-fi ideas is an occasionally sweet and kind film about the older Adam reckoning with how he treated his mom as a kid and the frustrations he had with his father, while the younger Adam becomes aware that the way he considers his parents as a child will have a long-lasting effect both on himself and his family. Even in these touching scenes, The Adam Project tries to bite off more than it can chew. Each of these sections allows for lovely moments between Adam and those people in his life, but the way the film mostly drops them once their time with Adam is done is strange, especially when these segments end on major emotional moments. In the scene, Adam has to come face-to-face with the trouble he gave his mother, while also trying to explain that despite her son’s attitude, he still loves her deeply. It’s almost as if Levy and the writers want to address the questions audiences will have with a time travel story so that they know these questions were at least considered, but then makes sure the audience knows there is no reason to even care. When asked about the enemies who explode after they are supposedly killed by Adam, he shrugs off the implications with a variation of “it’s complicated!” When the younger Adam or Adam’s father Louis (Mark Ruffalo) asks any serious questions about the impact that Adam’s time travel might have in the larger world, he tells the person to shut their mouths or to stop asking so many questions.

Pretty much everyone in the audience would agree that "The Adam Project" is nothing if not special. Ryan Reynolds piped in to praise Levy. "You sit in the audience when you're making the movie," Reynolds said. Karger asked about the process of seamlessly mixing genres from family drama to sci-fi in "The Adam Project," and Shawn Levy said, "Well, mixing comedy and action, that's not easy, but that's easier than mixing comedy, action, and emotion. While the film may seem like a typical sci-fi movie on the surface, it becomes instantly clear that at its heart, "The Adam Project" is a film about family, grief, and love — with a time travel twist. Netflix invited Looper to an early in-person screening of "The Adam Project," followed by a Q&A with Reynolds, Ruffalo, Scobell, and director Shawn Levy. Dave Karger moderated the event, including a question about the movie's genre-bending plotline. "The Adam Project" stars Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldaña, Jennifer Garner, and young star-in-the-making Walker Scobell. With a cast this incredible, it's no surprise that the film has received overwhelming accolades from critics.
The Adam Project has been given an age rating of PG-13 meaning most younger audiences can watch either by themselves or with family. More details, here.
Even still, if you would like to watch something a little tamer in nature, we suggest watching Next Gen, We Can Be Heroes, and The Mitchells vs. This rating was given mostly because of a few scenes in the Netflix movie where mild violence and strong language can be seen and heard. With how much excitement Netflix users are feeling because of this movie, you definitely aren’t going to want to be the only one who doesn’t watch this sci-fi film.
Netflix's latest sci-fi movie is a Ryan Reynolds original that seems crafted to please pretty much everyone. So why did I hate it?
Still, I’m not sold on Ryan Reynolds. And The Adam Project isn’t the movie to change my mind. Halfway through the movie — which tells the story of a man from the future who travels back in time and teams up with his younger self and their dad (Mark Ruffalo) to save the world — I could feel my eyes rolling to the back of my head as my spirit left my body. Every movie he does feels the same, and every character he plays is interchangeable. And yet, with the exception of Deadpool (the smart-alecky superhero he was born to play), I can barely force myself to sit through any of his movies. Multiple scenes devolve into impenetrable conversations about fixed origin points in time and “echoes” across competing timelines, while Mark Ruffalo’s character exists solely to spout sci-fi mumbo jumbo. I thought Free Guy was a snoozefest made worse by its leading man.

There are others when it’s a cross between Star Wars and Top Gun. It’s got all of the emotional heft of a Steven Spielberg movie and the sheer unadulterated fun of a Robert Zemeckis one. That self-aware, sarcastic, smart-ass schtick was always a part of his charm and likability, but the mileage he gets from it really depends on who is behind the camera. Why reinvent the wheel when you can refer to another time travel movie in order to explain the significance of what’s happening in yours? They too know that all of that Van Wilder stuff is becoming a little tiresome and found a way to make it feel a lot less grating. He doesn’t pretend like The Terminator and Back to the Future don’t exist. But also that sense of anxiety and wonder that comes from lying on your back and staring up into the endless night sky. The Adam Project is the kind of movie that you obsessed about if you grew up in the 1980s. At this point, it feels like Ryan Reynolds is just doing a version of himself in every movie. It’s movies like this that make you feel seen, that make you feel like you aren’t alone. If you are seven right now, this is the kind of movie that will likely change your life the way The Goonies, and E. T., and Star Wars, and The Last Starfighter changed mine. Ryan Reynolds plays the older Adam Reed, a time traveling fighter pilot from the year 2050 who accidentally ends up in the wrong year while trying to save the future from being a downright terrible place to live in. Spend any more than a minute thinking about The Adam Project and it is entirely possible that its plot contrivances would just crumble before your very eyes.
