If Purdue goes down, we’d get a good hedging opportunity in the final. Moreover, Iowa is still underrated in the Big Ten hierarchy. Plus, the unit is led by Keegan Murray, who led the league in scoring (23.3 ppg) and was second in ORtg (129.9). It’s nice to have a stud like that in big moments like this. The Hawkeyes are my favorite future in this tournament. But this season has been a different story, as the Big Ten features five teams that rank in the top 20 in adjusted offensive efficiency — more than any conference. Illinois earned the top seed after a wild final week of games.

Eli Brooks is then stripped, which leads to a dunk at the other end that makes it a 10-point game. The Hoosiers, meanwhile, come into the Big Ten Tournament with a similar outlook — although, their resume right now probably would leave them on the outside looking in. Eli Brooks finally gets to the foul line on a driving layup that misses. Indiana's Xavier Johnson has 8 points with two 3-pointers as we enter the first media timeout. After getting some buckets from Xavier Johnson early, the Indiana offense has gone silent. Indiana already has nine personal fouls in the first half. He hits his first to tie the game. Michigan keeps it, but then turns it over with a poor inbound pass. Michigan turns up the heat on defense, and it appears to be working. Indiana keeps rolling out of the break. Michigan is out of the Big Ten tournament. What a complete and utter collapse by the Wolverines.
The final day of the Big Ten regular season may have proven that this week's conference tournament in Indianapolis should be quite the treat.

Over the same stretch, the Wolverines are 9-6. For both teams, this game has hearty NCAA Tournament implications, for Indiana even more so than Michigan. I don' ...
So, if Michigan beats a good team and then a bad team, the Wolverines can once again beat a good team. It all comes down to how you view Indiana and how the “good” team counter affects Michigan. Is it reset after the Wolverines beat a bad team? Well, here’s some calculus: Michigan can’t beat two good teams in a row as it has shown over the past month, but if you consult the schedule prior to that, the Wolverines can win multiple games in a row if their opponents aren’t all “good” teams. But the last time they won two in a row, one of the teams was Penn State — a bad team. But hear me out, the Wolverines can’t beat two good teams in a row, right? With the Wolverines set to begin play in the Big Ten Tournament against No. 9 seed Indiana on Thursday morning, The Daily’s men’s basketball beat predicts Michigan’s fate and who will take home the title.

The Big Ten Tournament is officially upon us and it's time to get bold regarding Michigan State basketball's path and potential matchups.
That changed a little bit toward the end of the regular season and it’ll continue in the postseason. When Walker scores at least 10 points, the Spartans are 9-2. Basically, when he’s on his game, Michigan State is tough to beat.

Something that hampered Maryland in both of its games against Michigan State this season has been 3-point shooting.
Michigan State meets Maryland in the second round of the Big Ten tournament on Thursday, March 10, 2022.
Maryland is looking to beat the Spartans for the first time this season, following a close call in College Park, Maryland back on Feb. 1 and Sunday's finale. Game notes: Michigan State and Maryland meet for the second time in five days, following the Spartans 77-67 victory over the Terrapins in Sunday's regular-season finale. Only this time, the two schools meet with a spot in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals on the line.
The Illini shouldn't have any trouble handling Michigan in the quarterfinals and Rutgers in the semifinals, but I do see Illinois losing to Purdue in the finals ...
With Juwan Howard back in the fold for Michigan, I expect Michigan to come out and play well against the Hoosiers with Hunter Dickinson making life difficult for Indiana star Trayce Jackson-Davis and getting strong perimeter shooting from Eli Brooks and Caleb Houstan. The Hoosiers have had a hard time sustaining offense as of late, with the exception of some strong play from Xavier Johnson as of late. The Illini will have a knack for making the winning loose ball plays, extra passes, and rebounds that they’ve relied on all year that may give them a slight edge over Rutgers and push them into the championship game. Frazier and Plummer will provide steady shooting to put the Illini ahead for stretches, and Kofi will continue to use his muscle inside for post seals and lane line passes for layups. The Illini make the Big Ten Tournament semifinals for the second time in 12 years, but they fall short of back to back championships. A rematch with the Hawkeyes looms, and Kofi Cockburn exploits his size advantage again; as I tweeted Sunday night, Filip Rebraca wants none of that smoke. As we saw on Sunday night, it took lots of missed free throws and some luck misses for the Illini to beat Iowa. Unfortunately, on Saturday the Illini aren’t as lucky and fall to the Hawkeyes in a close game. It’s incredibly difficult to defeat a team three times in one season and even more difficult to beat a team two times in one week. I do think I can pick Iowa to beat the Illini though. The Illini already attained the near-impossible goal of winning the regular season title, so I’m gonna go with my heart rather than my head here. The Illini shouldn’t have any trouble handling Michigan in the quarterfinals and Rutgers in the semifinals, but I do see Illinois losing to Purdue in the finals. Zach Edey seems to be Kofi Cockburn’s kryptonite, and I just can’t see the Illini beating the Boilermakers on a neutral court. Success over the course of months matters more than success over the course of three days.

Ahead of the conference tournament, the Big Ten announced its regular-season honors on Tuesday, which included three Indiana players. For Indiana, there is no cut and dry method to getting into the tournament, but based on where it currently sits, it will need a win Thursday to even be considered for the big dance. I was on the first-team last year, so it is what it is.” Jackson-Davis averaged 17.4 points and 8.2 rebounds in the regular season, which was down from his first-team All-Big Ten performance last season where he put up 19 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. They took advantage of it on both ends of the floor.” Michigan, on the other hand, went 6-4 across its final 10 games of the season. It was an uncharacteristic performance for the Hoosiers’ defense, who finished second in the Big Ten in opponent’s 3-point percentage at 32.1%. In a season full of highs and lows for Indiana, its first matchup with Michigan might be the lowest. “On both ends of the floor, our defensive coverages were awful. After a 9-11 finish in conference play, Indiana will enter the tournament as the No. 9 seed. “We know what we have to do in order to get where we want to go, which is to the NCAA Tournament,” senior forward Race Thompson said. “Again, we're going to Indy to win the Big Ten Tournament, and we all believe we can do that.
The Big Ten is loaded with star-power and lacks a definitive favorite heading into the conference tournament.
Game 12: Game 9 winner vs. following Game 9 Game 3 winner The Big Ten tournament will be all about a showcase of all-league stars. Illinois and Wisconsin split the regular season crown in the Big Ten, but there’s no doubt this field is completely wide open. It’s possible that no conference in America had a more impressive collection of individual talent in men’s basketball than the Big Ten this season.

(7) Michigan State — 25 min. (5) Iowa — 25 min. (11) Penn State — 25 min. (13) Nebraska — 25 min. (14) Minnesota — 25 min. It's Purdue and Iowa for the 2022 Big Ten Tournament championship. Game 6: (6) Ohio State vs. With that in mind, we'd love to get another matchup between the Hawkeyes and Fighting Illini on Saturday. Should that happen, it's payback time for Iowa. There's no reason to expect anything but another high-scoring, back-and-forth war between these two, but this time the Hawkeyes pull it out. With that said, I like the Boilermakers in this matchup. Ohio State has a clear talent advantage here, and the Buckeyes beat Penn State twice this season — 76-64 in State College, 61-56 in Columbus. Yet, Ohio State comes into this game a little banged up, and as mentioned earlier, Penn State has been a thorn in the side of many teams this season. Northwestern probably has the better team top-to-bottom, and the Wildcats won both matchups between these teams in the regular season (87-63 and 77-65). However, Nebraska got hot at the right time and will have the best player on the court. But it's hard to pick against Keegan Murray. Look for a high-scoring affair between these two teams in Nebraska gets through Round 1.

"When you put yourself in a position to be in the NCAA Tournament, and you have a chance like us in the Big Ten tournament to jump up a seed or wherever it may be, get some good quality wins on a neutral floor, it's really important," Purdue senior guard Sasha Stefanovic said. "Just keep things simple, take what the defense gives you, and let's have a lot of fun with it." Having a double-bye allocates the team two extra days to prepare, allowing it time to continue assessing its own weaknesses. "It makes them stronger in the end. Costly losses are often deflating, especially for a team that entered the season with colossal expectations. Lansing State Journal columnist Graham Couch breaks down the Spartans' first matchup and path in the Big Ten tournament and gives his pick.
This is the second year in a row MSU has faced Maryland to open the Big Ten tournament and fourth time the Spartans have been the seventh seed or lower. The key, though, for the Spartans begins with defending how they did for long stretches last Sunday. Sure, Maryland missed a lot of outside shots in the first half, but the Spartans defensively also got into Maryland’s guards and helped on penetration as well as they have in a while. That’s as favorable a matchup as MSU could ask for among the Big Ten’s upper crust. But pound for pound, the Spartans match up with the Badgers better than they do the others in that realm, as shown by by their 12-point win in Madison in January. Wisconsin star Johnny Davis says he’s good to go after suffering an ankle injury against Nebraska in the season finale. Maryland is 15-16 overall, finished 7-13 in the Big Ten and is unranked. • Records/Rankings: MSU is 20-11 overall, finished 11-9 in the Big Ten and is unranked. It’s not that Wisconsin isn’t deserving of its share of the Big Ten title. • A look at MSU's Big Ten tourney path: Should MSU beat Maryland, No. 2 seed Wisconsin awaits the Spartans for a 6:30 p.m. Friday quarterfinal. It’s only the sixth time since the Big Ten tournament began in 1998 that MSU hasn’t earned a bye straight to Friday’s quarterfinals. This is his first season as the interim head coach of the Terrapins, taking over in December when Mark Turgeon stepped down/was forced out. He was previously the head coach at Wake Forest for six seasons. • Coaches: MSU — Tom Izzo is 663-265 in his 27th season as a head coach, all with the Spartans. Maryland — Danny Manning is 126-153 in his seventh season as a head coach.
Here are the staff's predictions on what will happen over the next five days in Indianapolis.
It wouldn’t be completely infeasible for the Badgers to win in Indianapolis, but if they were to cut down the nets a lot of things would need to go right and a lot of players would need to step up. Ryan: Oh what the hell, I will say Wisconsin. We’re coming off of a regular season where they were supposed to finish near the bottom of the conference and they were a Johnny Davis injury away from being outright conference champs. Marcus Bingham, Jr. is a DUDE. Gabe Brown is as talented a player as you’ll see in the conference, and they still have Tom Izzo who seems to bust out the Devil Magik come March. Anytime you can avoid Michigan State it’s good to do so. If they can keep games within reach I think they get to the championship game and get another shot at Illinios. If you draw Purdue I think it might be difficult to beat them a third time, but I thought it would be tough to beat them twice and they did. I will say, I would love to see a title game between Illinois and Wisconsin to really finish off the year in the right way. Provided he’s healthy, I think the Badgers manage that first round matchup against either MSU or Maryland without a huge amount of difficulty- though the Spartans obviously have talent and split their season series against Wisconsin they’re in a massive down-slide and look like a shell of themselves. Davis could carry the Badgers to the final, but if they do make it a matchup nightmare in Illinois and Cockburn looms. They play with a ton of grit and push even the best teams in the conference until the very end. Both the Terps and Spartans are kind of reeling right now so I think the Badgers can come away with a victory in that contest. They have wins against each of the top seven teams in the conference but also dropped games to Minnesota, Penn State and Northwestern. In short the absurdity, as Tyler notes above, of the B1G this year can be neatly summed up via Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights have several players including Geo Baker and Ron Harper Jr. that are the epitome of streaky confidence guys. Coming into the year it was Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue and Illinois. In the end you get Wisconsin and Rutgers being in those top four spots instead and teams like Michigan and Michigan State barely hanging onto a tournament spot.

Then came Thursday’s win.
