Renée Zellweger Stars In The NBC Docudrama <i>The Thing About ... (TIME)

The NBC docudrama offers a tongue-in-cheek look at a stranger-than-fiction story of murder, greed, and deception.

She claimed to police that Gumpenberger had tried to kidnap her at knifepoint to get “Russ’ money,” a reference to Betsy’s husband that was believed to be Hupp’s attempt to frame Faria. She may have also been looking to take attention away from her own involvement in the case. Lincoln County Prosecuting Attorney Mike Wood said he would seek the death penalty for Hupp. “I do not take lightly the decision to pursue the death penalty,” Wood said in a press conference. During the trial, Schwartz wasn’t allowed to talk about Hupp’s possible motives in Betsy’s murder because the prosecution had successfully argued that she had “no direct connection” to the case. Hupp was the beneficiary of her mom’s life insurance. The following year, Lincoln County Prosecutor Mike Wood said that his office was investigating possible police and prosecutor misconduct in the original Betsy Faria murder investigation. She was also the one who pushed the narrative that Russ was an abusive husband who was out to get Betsy’s life insurance money when she died. “Whatever car she thought Russ was driving, she’d say she saw in the drive,” Schwartz told St. Louis Magazine. The third of four children, Hupp was described by friends as a “boy crazy” cheerleader with a big personality and an even bigger laugh, according to St. Louis Magazine. By the end of her senior year, she had gotten pregnant and then married, a turn in her life that, according to friends who spoke to the magazine, made her resentful of those who went on to college. And she was very adept at office politics.” But he also said that there were some “weird things” that happened during her tenure at the company. The first cop who arrived at the scene of the crime said Russ seemed visibly upset, but “had limited tears coming from his eyes,” according to St. Louis Magazine. It was important to Zellweger, who is also an executive producer on the series, that they stuck as close to the bizarre, and often infuriating, details of the case as possible. Zellweger, however, said she felt that “in the case of telling this story, it was really important to as closely resemble Pam Hupp as we possibly could, because she seems so familiar.

'The Bachelor' Fantasy Suites & 'FBI' Dominate Tuesday; NBC ... (Deadline)

'The Bachelor' and 'FBI' were the standouts for Tuesday primetime, which also featured season finales and a series premiere for NBC.

In the 9 p.m. hour, This Is Us (0.6, 4.10M) dipped in both measures from two weeks prior (0.7, 4.28M). The NBC drama’s latest episode also marked season lows. To Tell The Truth (0.3, 1.87M) closed out the evening for ABC. Wednesday welcomes a number of premieres amid ABC’s half-hour family comedies and NBC’s Chicago slate. FBI (0.6, 7.54M) was the night’s most-watched program. The Bachelor returns next week for yet another two-night event, leading up to the Season 26 finale. Despite that, This Is Us still topped FBI: International (0.5, 5.79M), Naomi (0.1, 0.44M) and the season finale of I Can See Your Voice (0.3, 1.46M). The Fox competition series was steady in the demo from its Season 2 premiere in January (0.3, 2.18M) and the Season 1 finale (0.3, 3.36M). Excluding The Bachelor, FBI was the highest-rated program of the 8 p.m. hour, besting The Resident (0.4, 3.08M), Superman & Lois (0.1, 0.78M) and the finales of NBC freshmen American Auto and Grand Crew. American Auto (0.3, 1.91M), the latest workplace comedy from The Office writer-producer Justin Spitzer, was down from two weeks prior and just slightly below its series premiere in December (0.4, 3.03M). Similarly, Grand Crew was slightly down in its season finale (0.3, 1.37M) from its series premiere in December(0.4, 2.29M). Both NBC comedies are awaiting news about a potential season 2. CBS premieres Survivor Season 42, Fox brings back The Masked Singer and debuts Domino Masters. The CW’s welcomes back the Shen family for Kung Fu season 2. After opting for a repeat amid State of the Union coverage last week, FBI was steady with the preceding non-repeat broadcast two weeks ago (0.6, 7.10M). The finale hour of primetime belonged to FBI: Most Wanted (0.5, 5.43M), which topped the series premiere of NBC’s The Thing About Pam (0.4, 2.79), starring an unrecognizable Renée Zellweger as Pam Hupp. Most Wanted bit farewell to Julian McMahon and his character Jess LaCroix. Read Deadline’s converation with executive producer David Hudgins about McMahon’s exit here. ABC’s The Bachelor and CBS’ FBI were the standouts for Tuesday primetime, which also featured season finales and a series premiere for NBC. The Bachelor with its dramatic Fantasy Suites episode was the highest-rated program of Tuesday evening, earning a 0.7 in the 18-49 demo rating and 3.37 million viewers, per fast affiliates.

Renée Zellweger Makes The Thing About Pam Inexplicable (Vulture)

A review of 'The Thing About Pam,' a fictionalized adaptation of a true-crime story and podcast covered and produced by newsmagazine 'Dateline.

“For the first time, Pam wasn’t in control of her own story,” Morrison intones, but The Thing About Pam is so disparate in its methods and so mistaken in its centering of Zellweger that it loses its own sense of control, too. Brightly colored, chipper fantasy sequences in which we see how the narcissistic Hupp views herself (dressed in all white like an angel and adored by her family and friends or performing every role in a courtroom better than the actual judge, jurors, or bailiff) tip The Thing About Pam toward comedy. Instead, this fictionalized miniseries is partially a meta-experiment in the newsmagazine format’s reliance on dramatic reenactments, partially NBC patting itself on the back for Dateline helping to release an innocent man, and partially Zellweger doing the most, and The Thing About Pam cannot sustain all three. Betsy’s friend Pam Hupp was the last person to see her alive, and she points directly at Russ — around whom she spins accusations of abuse that the police accept without a second thought. But The Thing About Pam isn’t a documentary because that approach has already been done for this story by NBC itself in a podcast of the same name and five Dateline episodes. That is an actual line from my notes on The Thing About Pam, the NBC miniseries premiering tonight about the 2011 murder of Betsy Faria that the network’s long-running newsmagazine Dateline has covered for years.

Renée Zellweger's fat suit is getting all the press, but Judy Greer and Josh Duhamel also get a chance to shine.

Greer’s Askey gleefully and repeatedly emphasizes to Schwartz how far away from the Troy inner circle he is, but Schwartz is undaunted, believing he has the truth on his side. So often unfairly sidelined to the best-friend-in-the-rom-com role, Greer is uncharacteristically wily as Askey, refusing to admit that she may have fingered the wrong guy and crafting any number of implausible theories to make that accusation stick. Like the podcast, The Thing About Pam is narrated by Dateline correspondent Keith Morrison, which adds a strange but compelling folksy flavor to an increasingly disturbing story.

But her role in "The Thing About Pam" required a special sort of commitment: Zellweger began her days on set with up to four hours in the makeup chair. The team had seen images of Faria sporting a perm and straight bangs, and replicated the look almost exactly, per Variety. "In this era of peak TV, having an artist of Renée’s caliber is an incredible advantage. Renée Zellweger is no stranger to transforming for a role. But what really is "the thing about Pam" that has inspired such fascination? In 2011, Hupp allegedly murdered Betsy Faria, a woman she claimed was her best friend, in a bid to collect insurance money.
