The Packers are not letting Davante Adams walk in free agency. The chase for a multiyear extension, however, continues. Green Bay on Tuesday placed the ...
Gutekunst recently asserted Green Bay is still in position "to compete for championships," adding that Adams plays a big factor in that equation. Though the club hasn't been able to satisfy its Super Bowl hunger, the two-time All-Pro has feasted in the postseason. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst expressed in late February his desire to strike a long-term deal with Adams. The two sides have until July 15 to reach agreement on a contract that would supersede the projected $20.145 million tag for Adams, per Over The Cap.
Shortly after the news of Rodgers' return, the Packers on Tuesday tagged their star wide receiver just before the deadline. The Packers were going to tag Adams ...
He's the only player in NFL history with three seasons (2018, 2020-21) of 110-plus catches, 1,350-plus receiving yards and 11-plus receiving TDs and one of just three players in league history with 650-plus receptions, 8,000-plus receiving yards and 70-plus TD catches in his first eight seasons in the NFL; Marvin Harrison and Larry Fitzgerald are the others. The Packers agreed, but the sides could not agree on what defined the highest-paid receiver. When asked late last season about the possibility of being tagged, Adams said: "I'm not sure how to answer that safely right now. That contract averaged $14.5 million, which put him at No. 17 on the receiver pay scale last season. The Packers were going to tag Adams regardless of Rodgers' status; he was set to become a free agent on March 16. This allows the Packers to continue negotiations on a long-term deal until July 15 but also have the safety net of retaining Adams via the tag.
Aaron Rodgers is back with the Green Bay Packers, and so too is All-Pro Davante Adams, the most prolific receiver in the NFL over the past several seasons.
So, to hear something like that out of the blue – there was no conversation that led up to it or anything like that, it was just strictly from his heart, something he was thinking about – it means a lot to me as a player.” I was just thinking about him and having a lot of gratitude for our friendship and the fact I get to play with him for so many years now. “He texted me that before he said it; I think after the game was the first (time he said it publicly). But, yeah, it catches me off-guard a little bit just because I feel like what we don’t do enough as men in general is express the way we feel about one another or about the way he feels, whether it’s good or bad. Based on his ridiculous resume from the past several seasons, Adams is worthy of being the top-paid receiver. “I really feel like he’s the best player I’ve played with, and I said that to him the other night, actually. That not only would ensure Adams remains in Green Bay for the long haul but it would greatly reduce Adams’ Year 1 cap charge – a critical element with the team starting the day about $26 million over the cap. In 2010, then-general manager Ted Thompson placed the tag on defensive tackle Ryan Pickett as a way to buy time to sign him to a long-term deal. Late last season, Adams bristled at the prospect of being tagged. “Obviously, we do a lot of studies on those metrics and different things,” Gutekunst said. The actual franchise tag for a receiver is $18.149 million. In terms of average pay, Arizona’s Hopkins’ two-year contract is worth $27.25 million. It will be 68 touchdowns and counting when the 2022 NFL season kicks off.
That's because, as long anticipated, the Packers are expected to apply the franchise tag to arguably the best wide receiver in all of football -- per NFL ...
I'm playing with the best quarterback to play the game. If no long-term deal is struck with Adams by July 15, he'll be forced to play under the fully guaranteed franchise tag that will pay him $18.419 million in 2022. Davante Adams is now locked in with the Green Bay Packers in 2022.
The Packers will have to be under the salary cap by March 16th, when the new league year begins—although that extension for Aaron Rodgers will help clear quite ...
The franchise tag for Adams will be $20.12 million, now roughly putting Green Bay about $47 million over the cap when added to the $26.4 million deficit they already had. It’s also important to note that I just don’t see Adams playing out the 2022 season on the franchise tag. With that said, as Ken Ingalls pointed out, there is some risk as well for Green Bay beyond having to clear that additional cap space.
The two biggest puzzle pieces for the Packers are in place. But what's next? A lot of salary cap work for GM Brian Gutekunst and Russ Ball.
The fringes of the Packers’ roster might take the biggest hit as the team tries to reassemble the roster and stay in compliance with the salary cap. The Packers aren’t going to be able to bring back everyone. Like the others, converting base salary could lower his cap hit this year. Converting around $4 million in base salary to a signing bonus would reduce his cap number. The Packers won’t get cap savings from trading, but getting back a Day 2 draft pick could help Brian Gutekunst build out the rest of the roster with another cheap asset. Even with a market-resetting deal, it’s possible for the Packers to get his cap number down around $30-35 million. WR Davante Adams: The Packers can’t have him counting $20.1 million on the cap all year, and Adams won’t want to play the 2022 season on a one-year deal. After tagging Adams, the Packers are back around $46 million over the salary cap in 2022. The Packers would save almost $15.3 million in just one move. OL Billy Turner ($9.2M cap number): Turner can play almost every position along the offensive line, including both tackle spots. He has around $6 million worth of base salary capable of being converted into a signing bonus. CB Jaire Alexander: This one is in the works.
Regardless of whether Rodgers reveals his intentions today, the Packers will need to make the call on Davante Adams by 4 PM ET.
Edmonton Journal Ridley reportedly bet on parlays that included his own team while stepping away for mental health reasons. Kirk Cousins got a fully-guaranteed deal from Minnesota a few years ago, so what other revolutionary qualities can the Packers put in this offer?
