Aaron Rodgers' decision, Russell Wilson trade (unknown)

Aaron Rodgers signed a four-year extension to stay in Green Bay, while the Seattle Seahawks agreed to trade Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos.

As much as people wonder how San Francisco could deal Garoppolo after the way he led this team -- while battling through injuries -- the reality is the 49ers are going to have no trouble finding a favorable deal for their quarterback. After nearly a year of so little movement on these investigations, Watson's civil deposition is scheduled for Friday, the same day the district attorney investigating Watson plans to present her case to a grand jury, which will decide if criminal charges will be brought against him. While Watson's legal troubles create a hurdle in that situation, the main knock on Garoppolo these days is a shoulder operation he underwent this week.

QB Aaron Rodgers returning to play for Green Bay Packers (ESPN)

Four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers announced Tuesday that he will return to play for the Green Bay Packers.

Rodgers said he did not want to be part of a rebuilding process. So Rodgers must have received assurances from Gutekunst that he would be able to put together another contender. When offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett was hired as the Denver Broncos' coach in January, it fueled speculation that Rodgers could end up there. Coach Matt LaFleur said the team would "be crazy not to want him back here." Gutekunst brought wide receiver Randall Cobb back to Green Bay at Rodgers' request, and it was the beginning of improved relations between the quarterback and the front office. It was Gutekunst's decision to draft Love in 2020 that put Rodgers' future with the team into question.

Rodgers was also considering joining the Broncos before opting for a return to Green Bay, per NFL Network.

Aaron Rodgers says he will remain with Packers next season (Manhattan Mercury)

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Aaron Rodgers is planning to come back to the Green Bay Packers for an 18th season, a move that keeps the reigning MVP off the trade.

“I think we’ve got as good a shot as anybody to win a Super Bowl next year (with Rodgers),” Gutekunst said. So, it’s important as we go through this and the puzzle pieces we have to try to make fit. “It’s a big piece and a domino that kind of has to fall before we go down the other avenues. Rodgers also dealt with a fractured left pinky toe for much of the year, but continued playing at an All-Pro level. Rodgers said he got the sense there was better communication this season and that “I feel like my opinion mattered.” Rodgers had a tumultuous 2021 season in a number of respects, particularly for comments he made about his vaccination status. Rodgers reported for training camp on time but acknowledged his future with the organization was uncertain. NFL Network reported that the 38-year-old Rodgers had agreed to a four-year, $200 million contract that includes $153 million in guaranteed money. Rodgers said on multiple occasions over the last few months that his relationship with team officials had improved significantly. Rodgers’ plans had been the subject of much speculation ever since the Packers traded up four spots to take Utah State quarterback Jordan Love with the 26th overall pick in the 2020 draft. The reports of his decision surfaced the same day the Packers placed the franchise tag on All-Pro receiver Davante Adams. Unless Adams signs a long-term deal before July 15, he will make just over $20 million in 2022. “YES, I will be playing with the Packers next year,” Rodgers said.

What Does Aaron Rodgers' New Deal Mean For Russell Wilson's Future With Seahawks? (unknown)

With two years left on his current contract, it won't be long before Wilson and his agent will be pushing buttons for a massive extension.

For now, Wilson will earn $37 million in 2022 and his contract still remains in the top five for highest-paid players in the league. Then in 2018, Rodgers and the Packers agreed to terms on a four-year extension worth $134 million with nearly a $60 million signing bonus. On the other side of the coin, if the franchise sputters to another last place finish and misses the playoffs again, Seattle may officially enter all-out rebuild mode next offseason. If Seattle bounces back next season and returns to the playoffs behind a strong season from Wilson, both sides may want to re-up their commitment to one another. Two years later, Wilson came close to matching that contract from an annual salary standpoint by agreeing to terms with the Seahawks on a four-year, $87.5 million extension to become the second highest paid player in the sport. Though it ensures that a long-time rival in the NFC will remain a top Super Bowl contender for the foreseeable future, the news of Rodgers' massive extension doesn't impact the Seahawks directly.

Their championship window remains intact, centered around the pursuit of getting Rodgers his second Super Bowl title. He'll become the first Packers quarterback to play 18 seasons with the franchise, already surpassing Brett Favre's and Bart Starr's record of 16 this past season (2021 was Rodgers' 17th year with Green Bay). MVP Rodgers 'Very Excited' to Return to Packers (Sports Illustrated)

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Aaron Rodgers is returning to the Green Bay Packers, the four-time NFL MVP announced through Pat McAfee on Tuesday morning.

A lot of times it goes to the best player on the best team, and we’re the best team. It’s that middle letter – the “V” for Valuable. The Packers were the second-most-impacted team by injuries this season, according to ManGamesLost.com. In terms of the value of the player and the amount of games missed, David Bakhtiari was the most important injury of the NFL season, Za’Darius Smith was second and Jaire Alexander was ninth. Rodgers put his stamp on the MVP race with a sensational finishing stretch to the season. It’s that transition that provides comfort that Rodgers will be worth whatever contract extension is coming his way and will keep the team among the NFL’s short list of championship contenders in 2022 and beyond. Whatever he needs to go through to make the best decision for himself, and certainly we would love for him to be a Packer and be a Packer to the day he decides to retire.” Peyton Manning is the only five-time MVP and Favre is the only player to win three consecutive MVPs. The offseason opened with Rodgers having an untenable cap charge of $46 million for the 2022 season, the final year of the contract that was restructured upon his return before training camp last summer. I’m thankful for the relationships – with Brian as much as anybody – because there was obviously some things that were voiced in the offseason, privately between him and myself, and I’m just thankful for the response. With Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady’s retirement and the lack of draft capital for the Los Angeles Rams, the path in the NFC isn’t insurmountable. Instead, Love’s struggles in those games, combined with Rodgers’ vastly improved relationship with Gutekunst, have set the stage for Rodgers potentially starting and ending his career with the team that drafted him in 2005. While it didn’t translate into playoff success – the Packers have been shut out of the Super Bowl since 2010 – his presence and performance at least give the Packers a chance to contend, something that might not have been true with Jordan Love. The next “domino,” to borrow the word used by Gutekunst, will be to use the franchise tag on Davante Adams by 3 p.m. (Central). That probably would have happened, anyway, but keeping Rodgers means the Packers will use the tag as a way toward hammering out an extension with the All-Pro receiver.

The four-time MVP proved exactly how much teams should be willing to do to keep their stars happy, and everyone should take notice.

For Saturn and a few of its rings, and demand that Pluto be reinstated its planethood just because they feel like it. For realizing that no one was going to tell him “no.” And for showing another generation of players just how valuable they are and how desperate those who employ them can get. Theoretically, they were armed with absolutely everything they needed to walk away from Rodgers during the most fitful moments of this passive-aggressive power struggle. That they would have to be listened to. He did what Brett Favre couldn’t do, establishing his value to the point where it was the understudy, not the entrenched MVP, who would have to go. In vacillating between hero of all jaded employees and suspect Reddit Thanksgiving uncle, Rodgers was essentially forcing the Packers to make a plaster mold of his personalities, desires, preferences and talents for him to comfortably fall back into.

Aaron Rodgers Says He Has a Deal to Stay With the Packers (The New York Times)

The quarterback, a four-time N.F.L. most valuable player, had been locked in a conflict with the team over his influence in personnel decisions.

Facing salary cap concerns, and a host of unrestricted free agents, Gutekunst can now turn his attention to the free-agent market, which opens March 16. Before that game, Rodgers told reporters that his future with the team was a “beautiful mystery.” On the first day of the 2021 draft, one year after the Packers selected a quarterback, Jordan Love, in the first round, reports surfaced that Rodgers was upset with team executives and that he did not want to return. The N.F.L. fined him $14,650 for violating protocols for unvaccinated players, which included not wearing a mask during his weekly news conferences and attending a Halloween party. In July 2021, on the first day of training camp, Rodgers held a 31-minute news conference. Rodgers’s return nails down a major part of the Packers’ off-season puzzle and forces other teams searching for an upgrade at quarterback to look elsewhere. For the first time, he explained his frustrations. Adams is expected to receive Green Bay’s franchise tag this week. “If you can’t commit to me past 2021, and I’m not a part of the recruiting process in free agency, if I’m not a part of the future,” Rodgers said, “instead of letting me be a lame-duck quarterback, if you want to take a chance and move forward, then go ahead and do it.” Rodgers had completed one of the best seasons of his career, and was the league M.V.P., but he balked at not having enough say in building the team roster, a gripe that culminated with the team drafting his potential successor. Rodgers’s statement batted down that account. While Rodgers turned in a second consecutive M.V.P. season, the tension between the men amplified scrutiny of Rodgers’s off-field missteps last season, including his admission that he misled reporters about his vaccination status after testing positive for the coronavirus in November and his lashing out at “cancel culture” in an interview with McAfee in the same month.

Aaron Rodgers' return keeps open Green Bay Packers' three ... (USA TODAY)

Seven months ago, Aaron Rodgers aired his grievances with the Packers. Now, the four-time MVP is back for another run with Green Bay.

No move Gutekunst made over the past year was as significant as Tuesday’s announcement Rodgers will return for at least another season, and likely more. Gutekunst showed enough earnest in seeking Rodgers’ opinion for the quarterback to feel not only empowered, but appreciated. For years, he felt shut out of personnel discussions, a frustration considering his influence on the franchise’s success on and off the field. Rodgers had no input on the process that led the Packers to hire head coach Matt LaFleur. The opportunity just to be in conversation.” Rodgers pointed to a conversation with Gutekunst following a walkthrough early in camp as the genesis, comparing it to when he shook hands with former teammate Brett Favre at the NFL Honors in 2015, the turning point in a once-sour relationship. The rules are the same for most people, but every now and then there are some outliers, guys who’ve been in organizations for 17 years and won a few MVPs, where they can be in conversations at a different, higher level. Still, Rodgers needed proof of change, not merely the optimism for a different relationship. “I’m definitely not closing the door on anything,” Rodgers said when asked if 2021 would be his final season on camp’s opening day last July. “I’m always optimistic toward the ability to change. His extension will carry into his early 40s, an age Rodgers always said he wanted to reach as a player. He held the leverage, a rarity for any NFL player, and wasn’t about to show his cards. Rodgers is no longer a lame-duck quarterback after securing his second straight MVP last season, becoming only the fifth player in NFL history to win the award in consecutive years.
