Where do the Atlanta Falcons and suspended WR Calvin Ridley go ... (Blogging Dirty)

The NFL has suspended Atlanta Falcons receiver Calvin Ridley for betting on NFL games. A surprising turn in what has been an odd.

Despite Ridley’s promise to come back healthier the best move for Atlanta in this situation is to move on. Sports gambling is a fast-growing industry you don’t have to be a sports fan to be aware of that fact. From Atlanta’s perspective, this is a huge loss for a team that is now definitively going to be without Calvin next season. That is an admirable decision but in the midst of a good decision, Ridley made one that will haunt him for the rest of his career. Pete Rose is the headline example of a player whose great career was changed in the fact his career is often remembered not for the great career he had but for the horrible mistakes he made. Ridley was suspended for betting on NFL games after leaving the Atlanta Falcons during the season.

Obviously, the Falcons would be better off with Ridley in 2021, but are they really prepared to offer him the lucrative contract extension his agent will want after the 2022 season? There has been no word from either the Falcons or Ridley’s camp on what the plan is for the former All-Pro. Whatever the future holds, the Falcons could really use the draft capital in a potential Ridley trade to bolster the roster, given the bevy of holes littered across the roster. Ridley may need a fresh start, and Atlanta may be better served with future draft assets.

The reality is that Ridley’s situation doesn’t impact Watson at all. So is that why the Houston Texans haven’t traded Deshaun Watson yet? The Falcons may have known that this was coming, and as a result, they did not trade Ridley due to acting in “ good faith.”

It’s a terrible look for the NFL to have one of its players betting on games, and a terrible look for Ridley to be making some NFL wagers on an app when everyone knows the NFL has a rule banning sports betting. 6. The latest SI Media Podcast features an interview with Jim Miller. The author, reporter and podcast host shared his insights on all the recent NFL broadcaster madness. But in the Twitter world, you’re definitely not allowed to be on the owners’ side. 2. We live in a time when you have to take sides during a fight, but I don’t understand why anyone would take sides in the owners-vs.-players dispute in MLB. I’m not on any side. ESPN and fans rightfully expect me to be objective, and my record shows I’m extremely committed to representing all sides of a story. Calvin Ridley has an $11 million contract with the Falcons. He’s not going to fix a game in order to win a few thousand dollars when he’s already making that kind of money. Pat McAfee match at WrestleMania and more. In this instance, I fell short of that standard.” Ridley is also not being a top-level star. Here’s where common sense comes in: You know why a player betting on his own team is considered “bad”? Because you don’t want the player “fixing” or “throwing” the game. Troy Aikman to ESPN. Joe Buck to ESPN? What is going on with Al Michaels? Where will Fox turn for a No. 1 NFL booth? They don’t need the money.

Since 2018, when the Supreme Court cut down a 1992 federal law that had limited sports betting primarily to Nevada, the thick walls that have long separated the N.F.L. from the gambling industry have crumbled. The league provides training to more than 17,000 N.F.L. personnel, including workers on game days and stadium employees. Shaw, who was on the injured reserved list at the time, was suspended for the remainder of the 2019 season as well as the 2020 season. Players are, however, allowed to bet on other sports. Bell suspended Hapes, who admitted having been asked to throw the game but did not report it to the league. “This will help me be the best version of myself now and in the future. Bell said that the police found that the players had not taken any bribes, and so allowed Filchock — who had denied being approached by gamblers — to play. Ridley placed three parlay bets between Nov. 23 and Nov. 28 on the Hard Rock Sportsbook mobile app while he was in Florida, according to a person with knowledge of the matter who was not authorized to speak publicly. Genius Sports, which monitors sports betting data for the league, alerted the N.F.L. that a player might be behind those bets. The team exercised his fifth-year option for the 2022 season last spring. The Falcons said in a statement that they first learned on the league’s investigation on Feb. 9, and that they “support the league’s findings and actions.” “Nor was there evidence suggesting any awareness by coaches, staff, teammates, or other players of his betting activity.”
