The Spartans came out guns a-blazing and got off to a hot start. Michigan State came back and Bingham hit back-to-back 3-pointers. Michigan State needed a big win on Senior Day and the seniors delivered.
Michigan State basketball leapt out to a 14-0 lead, then hung on in the regular-season finale, a 77-67 win over Maryland. on Sunday in East Lansing.
"The message (at halftime) was we have to do a better job of winning the fight..." Maryland interim coach Danny Manning said of the Spartans. "Their team was at too high of a clip for our liking. And that was the difference," Izzo said. "Defensively, we were better most of the game. MSU’s defense, a persistent problem in recent weeks after a dominating start to the season, returned in abundance. "They won a couple championships, they've gotten to a Final Four, and then they've been through the pandemic. After winning the tip, Bingham cut off a screen and elevated quickly. By the time Bingham and Hauser went to the bench at the 16:29 mark of the first half, the three seniors had already left a footprint in the sand, as Izzo says annually about his seniors. Hauser gave a big hug to assistant coach Doug Wojcik’s wife, Lael, who was the honored veteran before the game. "The First Four experience (last year) wasn't great, but (the seniors) have been through a lot," Izzo said. All of a sudden, the 25th-ranked Spartans found themselves in another dogfight with less than eight minutes to play. Michigan State basketball scored the first 14 points against Maryland on Sunday, and Breslin Center was rocking.

The Terrapins are firmly outside of the NCAA tournament field and will need a Cinderella run next week at the Big Ten tournament to join the field. Hauser transferred from Marquette in search of a bigger stage and has become an integral part of MSU on both ends of the floor with his normally-consistent play. The losses have sent MSU tumbling in the Big Ten standings and Bracketology and now they are hanging on in the NCAA tournament by the skin of their teeth. Hauser and Peterson both transferred to Michigan State in search of different things. The biggest problem in the losses has been the loss of MSU’s identity over the past month. Now, the duo is the face of the team trying to keep its head above water.

Maryland started the game 0-for-14 from the field and didn’t make a shot until the game was nearly nine minutes old. The Spartans will open the tournament with a rematch against No. 10 seed Maryland at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday in Indianapolis. Bingham finished with a career-best three 3-pointers en route to a 12-point, 11-rebound performance. Prior to Sunday, the Spartans had lost seven of their last nine games, including back-to-back road games last week by 10 points or more. Michigan State recorded five turnovers in that stretch and allowed the Terrapins to heat up from 3-point range as they stormed back Malik Hall added seven straight Spartans points of his own to close the game out.
