In real-life Nashville, Parton brought her words to the studio. And a book may not be the only way to experience AnnieLee's story. "When he told me he wanted to write something about Nashville, I thought, 'Well, how hard can that be?'" Parton said. "For her to come from the hills of Tennessee — with all the talent she had — but still to make it, the odds were huge that she wouldn't. When I first came from upstate New York to New York [City], same thing: No way am I going to get to be a best-selling author. "I always thought I'd write a novel, or a mystery, at some point in my life," Parton told The Tennessean, "because I do love to tell stories. Parton continued, "The young one? In turn, Patterson — who before Parton worked on a pair of books with former U.S. President Bill Clinton — enlisted a co-author he described as fair, funny and down-to-earth.
