The Academy of Country Music's latest award ceremony highlighted the fun still possible within the frenetic pace of music's streaming future.
On Monday night, two artists who have yet to win an ACM Award -- BRELAND, a 26-year old African-American male singer-songwriter born in New Jersey and Brittney Spencer, a plus-sized, African-American female performer from Baltimore, Maryland -- shined. He's not an unlikely country superstar, but perhaps the godfather of a wild new era where 15-second choreography melds with hook-driven songwriting to define the highest level of industry success. "If there's a new place where you can get anything you create directly to the fans, try it out, test it out, and take advantage of it. More than anything, the 2022 ACM Awards represented a significant moment for established and emergent female artists. Kicking off night were Gabby Barrett and Jimmie Allen -- two of the event's three hosts, alongside Parton -- performing covers of two country classics with Las Vegas roots. The same can be said for Luke Combs, event co-host Jimmie Allen, and other established male country stars.

The "Jolene" singer, who also served as the night's host, came to the stage after the tribute, where she was greeted with a big hug from Clarkson. With the ACM Awards returning to Las Vegas, it only made sense that Allen and Barrett would kick things off with a celebration of the party city. While the song itself is dark, his incredible performance proved to be one of the most memorable of the night.

Many fans on social media were puzzled to see Bryan perform “Up,” as well as his hit “Buy Dirt” with Jordan Davis, given the “American Idol” judge had a big concert scheduled at the Houston Rodeo on Monday night. Church was introduced as a superstar with a 16-year career, and while he has plenty of hits, he decided to play snippets of more than a dozen. (The spokeswoman added it was mentioned in an earlier news release.) Any new version of an award show has to make adjustments, but there were definitely some bumps — it was jarring to see the show at a stadium, rather than its former home of the MGM Grand Garden Arena, especially because it was still light outside when it started. Stapleton released “Watch You Burn” — a rage-filled track aimed at the mass shooter at the 2017 Route 91 Harvest country music festival in Las Vegas — in 2020. The duo capped off the night with an electric performance of their song “Skeletons,” followed by a collaboration with fellow Maryland native Brittney Spencer on Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Were Made for Walkin’.” Rhett, long an industry favorite, continues to grow stronger as a live performer; he threw himself into his latest single, “Slow Down Summer,” starting at the piano. “I was backstage trying not to cry my false eyelashes off!” Parton exclaimed. Hosting is often a thankless job, and Allen and Barrett gamely hung in there, though they clearly knew that their roles were to serve as Parton’s sidekicks. In a rare move for country music award shows, which normally prefer that you don’t talk about anything topical, Parton kicked things off by bringing up Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “I don’t want to be political, and this is not; I’d rather pass a kidney stone than do that,” said Parton, who often shies away from politics. Clarkson’s attempt at a country music career didn’t really work, but the pop superstar turned daytime talk show host proved that she can continue to crush any vocal from any genre. But producers made sure to bring in the star power, enlisting country icon Dolly Parton to co-host with rising stars Jimmie Allen and Gabby Barrett.

This October marks the five-year year anniversary of the tragedy. That proximity made the performance all the more powerful, as Stapleton, backed by the 16-member All Voices Choir, roared through his indictment. Chris Stapleton delivered one of the most powerful live performances of the 2022 ACM Awards when he sang his ferocious song of revenge “Watch You Burn.” Stapleton wrote the track, off his 2020 album Starting Over, as an open letter to the gunman who killed 60 country music fans at the 2017 Route 91 Harvest Festival shooting in Las Vegas. On Monday night, Stapleton sang the song onstage at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas — a short distance from the site of the massacre.
