Over a decade after the first film hit theaters, "King Richard" star Will Smith is set to appear in and executive produce a sequel to 2007's "I Am Legend."
The theatrical cut of "I Am Legend" sees Dr. Neville sacrifice himself in order to save a cure for the future of mankind. "I Am Legend 2" was still in early development by the time the 2022 Oscars rolled around. As of this writing, nothing has been stated about the status of the sequel (via People). When Deadline first reported on the development of the movie, a director wasn't even attached yet. As of this writing, it is unclear if "I Am Legend" filmmaker Francis Lawrence will also return to helm the sequel, or if it'll be another filmmaker who ultimately sits in the director's seat for the follow-up. Now, over a decade after the first film's release, Will Smith is set to star in an "I Am Legend" sequel, but he isn't the only notable actor attached to the project. As of now, no plot details about the film have been released, but, of course, that leaves plenty of room for speculation.
Did Will Smith's character die in 'I Am Legend'? And if so, how is a sequel film possible? Here's everything we know about the original and the sequel.
In 2008, a two-disc special edition of the film on DVD provides an alternate version of I Am Legend's ending. In I Am Legend, Robert ends the movie heroically saving two immune teens, Anna and Ethan. At the climax of the film, he is in the process of creating a cure to the Darkseeker mutation, which makes all the infected vampiric but vulnerable to sunlight. Anna and Ethan then arrive at a survivor's camp in Vermont and hand over the cure, narrating Robert's tale of heroics. In 2020, coronavirus deniers argued that the plot of the film was unfolding before their eyes, but in 2022, I Am Legend is popular for a different reason. Didn't Will Smith's character, virologist Dr. Robert Neville, die in I Am Legend? If so, how will that lead to a sequel? The 2007 post-apocalyptic thriller film I Am Legend continues to be a timely conversation piece.
Oscar-winning writer Akiva Goldsman, who adapted the Richard Matheson's 1954 novel for the original 2007 movie, is on board to pen the follow-up as well.

Will Smith is returning to the zombie apocalypse, and he's bringing Michael B. Jordan with him. Warner Bros. has announced plans to make a sequel to 2007's ...
In case you forgot, I Am Legend ends with Smith sacrificing himself to save fellow survivors Anna (Alice Braga) and Ethan (Charlie Tahana), who then bring his cure to a military-run survivor’s camp. Are you excited to see Jordan and Smith team up? Oscar winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind, Picard), who penned the first film, is returning to write the sequel. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, I Am Legend was a huge hit at the box office, grossing $585.4M worldwide. Warner Bros. has announced plans to make a sequel to 2007’s smash hit I Am Legend, with Smith reprising his role as Dr. Robert Neville, a U.S. Army virologist who finds himself alone in a deserted Manhattan after a worldwide plague that wipes out humanity. Those who do survive the plague are transformed into Darkseekers, vampiric mutants who cannot survive the sunlight and prey on the scattered survivors.
I Am Legend 2 is bringing back Will Smith's Robert Neville, but how? Using I Am Legend's alternate ending and cloning are just a few theories.
There is also the potential for I Am Legend 2 to reveal that Will Smith didn't die in I Am Legend's explosive original ending and has become a prisoner for the Darkseekers. This would be a big retcon to the original ending, but I Am Legend not showing his body makes it a viable option. While this exact story isn't needed for I Am Legend 2 necessarily, the sequel could show Neville as the Darkseekers' prisoner. This would be a way to bring parts of the alternate I Am Legend ending to the sequel without completely making it canon. There aren't many details known about the specific story the sequel followed in this fashion, but viewers would start the sequel with Neville and eventually come to learn that he is a clone. Cloning Neville isn't exactly the most creative way to bring Will Smith back for I Am Legend 2, but it is an intriguing and plausible option at this stage. While killing Will Smith in a heroic way was divisive, the darker I Am Legend alternate ending for Neville is now widely viewed as the better way for the story to end. This provides some wiggle room for Will Smith to return in I Am Legend 2, but the question is how this can happen. Akiva Goldsman came up with this idea, and although he said in 2014 that he didn't believe this version of the sequel would ever happen, he still also liked the concept. Will Smith is returning for I Am Legend 2, and here are some theories about how he can come back despite Robert Neville's death in I Am Legend's ending. Due to his increased understanding of the Darkseekers and the development of his cure, he could be a prominent figure in whatever society he is now part of. Despite reports that original screenwriter Akiva Goldsman is also back to write the script, there are no official plot details for I Am Legend 2. It now seems that the long-awaited sequel is finally happening after 15 years, as Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan are set to star in I Am Legend 2.
