There were 9,900 reports of skin irritation (in the form of redness or rashes) and 250 reports of blistering. The company, which was acquired by Google for $2.1 billion in early 2021, has recalled other products in the past. Of the recalled products, around one million were purchased in the United States and around 693,000 were purchased in other countries. If you purchased one of these recalled watches, you can return it to receive a full refund or you can visit Fitbit’s refund registration page. These denote a burn that has affected the fat layer underneath the skin, resulting in black, brown, or white burn areas, “leathery” skin, and destroyed nerves. The company has sold roughly 1 million of the smartwatches, which are being recalled for a burn hazard, in the U.S..

"We received a very limited number of injury reports—the totals in the CPSC announcement represent less than 0.01% of units sold—of the battery in Fitbit Ionic smartwatches overheating, posing a burn hazard. Additionally, there have been 78 reports of burn injuries in the U. S., including two of third-degree burns and four of second-degree burns. (Internationally, there have been 40 reports of burn injuries.)

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Ionic smartwatches and contact Fitbit to receive pre-paid packaging to return the device.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use of thousands of types of consumer products. The prescription medications were distributed by third party wholesalers to retail pharmacies and could have been dispensed to consumers. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Ionic smartwatches and contact Fitbit to receive pre-paid packaging to return the device. This recall was conducted, voluntarily by the company, under CPSC’s Fast Track Recall process. Fitbit is printed on the front of the Ionic Smartwatch. For the Ionic device, the model number (FB503) is on the back of the device near where the band attaches.
