President Biden brought a cheerleading tone to a normal-ish address for very abnormal times.

The flags being waved were Ukrainian blue and yellow. But the unified country that he spoke about was Ukraine, united for the horrific reason of its brutal invasion by Russia. The standing ovations were for its people. When he took office, President Joseph R. Biden Jr. likely hoped that a year later, he could begin his first State of the Union address with an inspirational exhortation about a united country rejecting authoritarianism, provoking standing ovations and flag-waving from both sides of the congressional aisle.

Fox News leads the pack with 7.2 million viewers, the most ever for a Democratic president on the network.

Biden’s address to Congress on April 28, 2021, was watched by 26.9 million viewers. Fox News said it counted 3.8 million streaming “starts” of the speech on its digital properties. Fox News launched in 1996. The stream of the speech on YouTube showed 1.7 million views as of late Wednesday. President Biden’s State of the Union address Tuesday was watched by more than 37 million TV viewers, according to Nielsen data, higher than his speech to Congress last year. The speech was probably seen by millions more people beyond the TV audience, as the event was streamed online across a wide number of platforms.
