New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama, took center stage in celebrating Mardi Gras after the COVID-19 pandemic put a damper on last year's celebrations.
Becoming an instant hit with tourists, Mardi Gras fans soon started decorating themselves in the beads to celebrate the occasion. The Rex’s King of the Carnival chose purple, green and gold to be draped over balconies, but it’s not clear why those specific colors were chosen. People bring them to the office. The return of Carnival season has been a much-needed boost for business in New Orleans, where the famed restaurants and music venues were restricted or closed for months. Revelers decked out in traditional purple, green and gold came out to party on Fat Tuesday in New Orleans’ first full-dress Mardi Gras since 2020. But music already was blaring downtown hours before the first Fat Tuesday parade as families used lawn chairs to stake out spots behind police barricades on Government Street, a main drag through the city.
The Carnival festivities are in full swing, and parades will be rolling throughout Louisiana for Fat Tuesday.
The Krewe of Crescent City parade will start at Napoleon Ave and S. Claiborne Ave in New Orleans at 11 a.m. There will be hours of floats, costumes, and crowds by the thousands. The Krewe of Elks Orleans parade follows and will start at Napoleon Ave and S. Claiborne St in New Orleans.
The New Orleans Police Department joined by Mayor LaToya Cantrell took to the streets for the ceremonial Bourbon Street sweep at midnight.
Mardi Gras is over, and many are recovering from a busy season, multiplied by the lack of parades last year.
There was a mentality I think for some people that said ‘we’re going to make up for last year,'” said David Rasp, the owner of Heroes and the Royal Scam. The Mobile Downtown Alliance says just one of their stores, the Urban Emporium, saw an increase in sales this year. The sales are tremendous. But we’re busy now getting orders placed with our suppliers overseas to get merchandise in,” he said. More than 118,000 people descended on downtown Mobile for Fat Tuesday alone. “Wiped out both physically as well as inventory wise,” said Stephen Toomey, the owner of Toomey’s, a Mardi Gras specialty store.
