Republicans leading 'pro-family revolution,' Kim Reynolds says in State of the Union response (Ames Tribune)

Kim Reynolds argued in a high-profile, prime-time speech Tuesday that Democratic President Joe Biden has taken the country backward for working families like the ones in Iowa. “Instead of moving America forward, it feels like President Biden and his ...

“By that most important measure at least, the State of our Union is indeed strong.” "I’m blessed to be the Governor of Iowa, where people are humble, hard-working, and patriotic,” she said. “She does what the national Republicans want her to do, whether or not it's in the best interest of Iowans,” said Iowa House Democratic Leader Jennifer Konfrst, D-Windsor Heights. “And she's being rewarded with a prime-time speaking slot tonight. And yes, we are, as they say, Iowa Nice. But you don’t have to be from Iowa to see that those are the values of America at its best — all of America.” “I was attacked by the left; I was attacked by the media. “Unfortunately we have a governor who is declaring war on teachers,” she said during a Tuesday afternoon call with reporters. On the issues that are affecting Americans, Republicans are leading.” “From across the checkout counter, I saw the pain of inflation on my neighbors’ faces,” she said. “That’s why Iowa was the first state in the nation to require that schools open their doors,” she said. The Republican-controlled body quickly passed a bill, and Reynolds signed it in February 2021. On Tuesday, she used it to hammer Biden over the way inflation is impacting working-class Americans. The opportunity has already boosted Reynolds’ national profile as she prepares to formally launch a reelection campaign.

I encourage this President to do the same. Republicans may not have the White House. But we're doing what we can to fill the leadership vacuum. What happened—and is still happening—to our children over the last two years is unconscionable. I was attacked by the left; I was attacked by the media. With Texas and Arizona leading the way, I, along with Republican governors from several states have sent resources to the border. And we actually listened to the science, especially with kids in masks and kids in schools. Families also have every right to live in a safe and secure community. But we honored your freedoms and saw right away that lockdowns and school closures came with their own significant costs; that mandates weren't the answer. But we shouldn't ignore what happened in the run-up to Putin's invasion. The President tried to paint a different picture tonight, but his actions over the last twelve months don't match the rhetoric. We would pass in the yard as he was coming home and I was leaving to work evenings at the local grocery store. In response to President Biden's first State of the Union address, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds delivers the Republican rebuttal.

"It's important to appreciate that the risk is just as high as the reward," said Brendan Buck, a former House Republican leadership aide. The speakers from the opposing party get to introduce themselves to a national audience who may have never heard of them. "She's really adhering to the Republican playbook where we're getting copy-and-pasted bills rammed through and passed in the state of Iowa," said Deidre DeJear, a Democratic candidate for governor. Reynolds, 62, described herself as a governor, "a mom and grandmother of 11 who's worried our country is on the wrong track." Reynolds is bound to be on the short list of running mates for the 2024 Republican presidential nominee. Reynolds has opposed mask mandates in schools, styling herself as a parents advocate.

Kim Reynolds Delivers Republican Rebuttal to State of the Union (The New York Times)

The governor's speech foreshadowed Republican arguments ahead of the midterm elections.

Whether any of this will pay off for Ms. Reynolds politically remains to be seen. “Keeping schools open is only the start of the pro-parent, pro-family revolution that Republicans are leading in Iowa and states across this country. “Iowa was the first state in the nation to require that schools open their doors,” she said. But to critics, Ms. Reynolds represents the contradictions and hypocrisies of a Republican establishment trying to project a moderate image while bowing to the whims of a former president who has little regard for the party’s mainstream past, or its future without him. Ms. Reynolds hammered the Biden administration’s response to the rise in inflation, accusing the White House of elitism for initially downplaying the issue. In Iowa, Ms. Reynolds has pushed policies championed by a conservative base and motivated by opposition to government efforts to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

Gov. Reynolds presents ‘an alternative’ to Democratic policies in State of the Union response (unknown)

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds emphasized personal freedom during her GOP response to President Joe Biden's State of the Union address.

“While Democrats in D. C. are spending trillions, sending inflation soaring, Republican leaders around the country are balancing budgets and cutting taxes,” she said. “Inflation is robbing them of the gains they might otherwise feel.” “Weakness on the world stage has a cost,” Reynolds said. “Her response failed, and it’s a big part of why there are fewer Iowans in the workforce today than when she took office.” “And now President Biden’s decisions have a whole new generation feeling that same pain.” “We can end the shutdown of schools and businesses,” Biden said in prepared remarks. Reynolds and Biden pointed to inflation as a major issue, though they proposed different solutions. “We honored your freedoms and saw right away that lockdowns and school closures came with their own significant costs; that mandates weren’t the answer,” Reynolds said. She took a similar approach on mandatory masking in schools: At the close of the 2021 legislative session, Reynolds held a midnight bill-signing to forbid schools from requiring face coverings. A federal judge issued a temporary injunction against the law in October, allowing school districts to allow mask mandates. Biden declared America had entered a “new moment in a fight against COVID-19,” pointing to new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance that most Americans can remove masks. On behalf of Republicans, she criticized Biden’s approach to crises in Ukraine and Afghanistan.

“I think it was a sad day for history in America,” the Republican governor of Iowa told the Des Moines Register in 2019. You'll be startled to ...

As MSNBC’s Joyce White Vance puts it, the fact that nearly the entire GOP unreservedly shielded Trump from accountability throughout that sordid saga is “the authoritarian elephant in the room.” This isn’t to compare today’s Trumpists with supporters of Adolf Hitler. It’s to argue that there are historical echoes in the broader dispute over how aggressive an international response should be mounted in defense of democracy, and against autocracy. “We’re looking at an expansive nationalist in Putin, and the nationalists in this country are sympathetic to that cause,” Rauchway told me. Republicans like Reynolds want us to pretend none of this exists. As CNN’s Stephen Collinson put it, Biden’s speech suggests “a hinge in history to compare with other great presidential moments.” “It feels like President Biden and his party have sent us back in time — to the late ’70s and early ’80s,” Reynolds lamented.
