The minimum wage is on the rise, at least for employees of one retail giant.

.In September of 2017, we told you that Target would be increasing its minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2020. Since other retailers have increased their wages to $15 an hour to entice people to work. Although the company pays $15 an hour at all of its locations, the $24 an hour bump will only be offered to employees in the most competitive markets, like New York for example.

Worker shortages around the U.S. during the pandemic have forced retailers to boost their pay.

In January 2020, pay for retail workers rose 4.2% from the previous year. The 49-year-old company in October 2020 raised its full-time minimum hourly wage to $17, with part-time workers earning an hourly base of $13. Walmart last fall boosted its minimum wage to $12, from the $11 hourly base it established in 2018. Amazon's starting wage is $15 per hour, and the e-commerce giant's nationwide average starting wage for jobs in transportation and fulfillment is $18 an hour. Target set a new marker for the retail industry back in 2017 when it announced it would increase hourly wages to $15 by 2020. The retailer also said that it was able to exceed its goal of hiring 100,000 seasonal workers at its stores and 30,000 in its supply chain network across the country throughout the 2021 holiday season — large companies looking to entice workers during the 2021 holiday season were doing whatever they could to bring in applicants.
