Cam Johnson fulfills bet with lemonade stand for hundreds of Suns fans (Arizona Sports)

PHOENIX — Monday afternoon for Phoenix Suns forward Cam Johnson had lined up to be fairly straightforward. The 25-year-old and the Suns would be hosting a lemonade stand in central Phoenix at a park to fulfill a bet he made with teammate Mikal Bridges.

“No one can,” Johnson said with a smile. I’ve loved living here and these people are a big reason why.” “Just for lemonade, it means a lot to me,” he said. Johnson, a third-year forward, didn’t even get through his full rookie year before the COVID-19 pandemic began. That area you see fans surrounding was where two-way wing Ish Wainright signed autographs and took pictures for just about everyone who wanted one, something Bridges and Payne did as well. Not here.’ And then I hear, ‘CP! CP!’ And of course, CP rolling through is like the president rolling through. He received the support of his teammates. About 15 minutes in, it became clear that the time it took to let everyone get an autograph and picture along with their beverage and/or snack was going to have Johnson there into the night. Didn’t know what to expect but it’s a big honor to be out in the community.” “People catch wind of it, maybe a couple more. The bet, made on ESPN’s NBA Today with Malika Andrews the week of the game, was set in stone. Bridges made sure to ridicule Johnson and remind him to get his stand ready once the final result was set.

Mitchell, Gobert lead surging Jazz over Suns, 118-114 (ESPN)

Donovan Mitchell scored 26 points, Rudy Gobert added 16 points and 14 rebounds and the Jazz stayed hot with a 118-114 victory over the NBA-leading Phoenix Suns on Sunday. “We've got so much talent, it's hard to lose when we play that way,” Gobert said.

Suns: Made 10 of their first 11 shots, scoring 24 points in the first six minutes of the first quarter. The Suns have a 1-2 record in those games. Ayton had 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting before the break while Mitchell scored 11 for the Jazz. Phoenix had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but Jae Crowder threw the ball out of bounds. I should know what to do and what not to do in that situation.” ... Gobert blocked three shots. “I have to be better at that situation,” Crowder said. It stayed tight throughout most of the final minutes but the Jazz were able to keep their lead, helped by Mitchell's banked-in 3-pointer with 1:50 remaining that put them up 10. Jordan Clarkson had 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting — part of the Utah second unit that played well and outscored Phoenix's bench 43-11. When we play that way, we're going to be in good shape every night.” “We've got a group that's willing to accept that,” Snyder said. Utah has won eight of nine to improve to 38-22.

5 takeaways from close loss to Jazz as Suns drop second in a row ... (AZCentral.com)

The Phoenix Suns blew a 14-point, first-half lead in Sunday's loss to the Utah Jazz as they dropped two in a row for only the third time this season.

They'll rise up for the good to great teams. Ayton's 23 looks nice, but only four came in the fourth. Paul is major on defense because he not only gets steals, but puts everyone in the right spots in real time. That's a no-no against the Jazz. Follow him on Twitter at @DuaneRankin. The Suns (49-12) probably top the Jazz for a seventh straight time Sunday if Paul is out there. Make that now four straight games Ayton has had single-digit rebounds. It's only natural to call upon your best player when things get sticky. Utah racked up 43 bench points. He can remind the Suns what to do during the timeouts in street clothes, but it's not the same as when Paul is in the game. After giving up 42-points in the third quarter of Friday's loss to New Orleans, Phoenix allowed 38 in the third quarter Sunday. The Jazz closed the quarter on a 16-3 run in the last 3½ minutes of the third to take a 94-89 lead into the fourth. Crowder tried to make a play for Booker, who had scored 13 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter, but threw the ball out of bounds.

Phoenix Suns show improvement but not enough to beat Utah Jazz (Arizona Sports)

Time to dial those expectations back if you were expecting smooth sailing for the Suns without Chris Paul (and, for the meantime, Cam Payne).

But Williams said their success with that type of inbounds play earlier in the game led to the thinking of going for a timeout. These are big moments for us, and I think later in the season and when it comes playoff time, all these moments are going to help us. Close game situations, learning how to close a quarter, controlling the pace, controlling the ball without Chris in the game if teams ever try to take him out when he comes back. … Everybody’s getting comfortable, everybody’s getting used to it and they’re trying to find ways to get me off the ball and not have to work so hard.” It was just too much of a bang-bang situation in less than four seconds for the Suns to properly execute. Mitchell was incredibly active, playing with an intensity that indicated he was sick of losing in Phoenix for the Jazz’s last three trips. Booker played 40 minutes, which is still too high for this stretch, but his workload was lightened slightly by Holiday’s presence in the rotation and more possessions of Crowder and Johnson bringing the ball up. Out of that break, the designed look for an on-the-move Jae Crowder 3 was contested so Crowder passed out of it directly to his left, where Booker stood. Johnson was trapped at half-court, which is the point where any chance of a solid look at a quick 3-pointer to avoid the Jazz fouling up three essentially ended. “I’m a veteran basketball player,” Crowder said of the play. Ultimately, Utah played slightly better, but not enough to make it a clear-cut case of who should win or be in control of the game. To rinse and repeat the theme from Friday, the wiggle room for a Paul-less Suns to come out with wins is cut off dramatically.

Is there a ceiling on Phoenix Suns wings as initiators? (Bright Side of the Sun)

In the meantime, head coach Monty Williams and the Suns have been especially reliant on the wings – Mikal Bridges, Jae Crowder and Cam Johnson – to pick up some offensive slack, to complement the regular production of stars Devin Booker (28.3 points ...

New to the starting role, Johnson’s had two games of 5 assists and is averaging 3.7 over this stretch, up from his 1.7 during the season. The coolest aspect of the larger dose of wing initiation is just the pure nature of it. For reference, a 40% three-point shooter earns about 1.2 points per possession (PPP). Especially with Bridges and Johnson, wing initiation most often takes the form of off-ball activity, including cuts, kickouts to shooters, and even isolation scoring. To get even more into the weeds, let’s look at some on/off court data, courtesy of FantasyLabs, Each of these will be the individual on the court without Booker, Paul, and Payne, so situations where the wings are forced to initiate. Suns are 1-2 in the three games since coming back, which can essentially be chalked up to the point guard rotation of Chris Paul, Cam Payne, and Aaron Holiday playing only one of the possible combined nine over this stretch.

So much went wrong on Sunday, leaving the Suns a lot to clean up (Bright Side of the Sun)

After losing their national TV game on Sunday to the Utah Jazz, the Phoenix Suns are 49-12 and still have a 6-game lead on the next best team in the league. Playing without the injured Chris Paul (avulsion fracture in right thumb) will take some adjustment ...

The starters outscored the Jazz by 7 in their 25 minutes, while every other lineup combination got collectively outscored by 11 in the other 23 minutes. It’s a game of runs, there were a lot of them today, and just being better when they’re going on one and cutting that off, and getting back on one of our own.” The third quarter defense has to be a lot better.” Only Landry Shamet recorded less than a -12 scoring differential while in the game. There’s a lot to learn and we’re going to do that.” The team as a whole looks discombobulated in their rotations. “But all of this stuff is going to make us stronger.” They are struggling to find consistency since losing Draymond Green (back, calf) with a 14-10 overall record since he has been out of the lineup. They have lost their galvanizer — the guy who sets them straight on every play on both ends of the court. The surprise, I guess, is how much the defense has suffered. Playing without the injured Chris Paul (avulsion fracture in right thumb) will take some adjustment, with every player moving up a step on the ladder. The Suns are scoring more per possession but so is everyone else.
