Michigan State basketball needed a near-perfect effort to beat Purdue on Saturday afternoon and it was all thanks to strong defense and hot shooting.
It was the fastest start the Spartans had gotten out to in weeks. And both Bingham and Hauser looked good off the bench, scoring a combined 10 points and playing solid defense. It was a gutsy win and it ties Tom Izzo with Bob Knight as the most wins as a Big Ten coach ever.

Purdue tied a season-high with 17 turnovers and watched Michigan State hit the game-winning basket with 1.4 seconds to play.
3-pointers: Purdue had one for the game and none in the second half. The Boilermakers slogged their way through the first half on the offensive end leaning on Edey to carry the production. Once again, turnovers hurt Purdue. It had seven in the first half after committing seven in the win over Rutgers on Sunday. But the biggest problem for the Boilermakers was the Spartans scoring in transition. The Boilermakers proceeded to fall apart. The loss knocks the Boilermakers out of the top spot in the Big Ten standings, ½ game behind Wisconsin, which plays Saturday night at Rutgers. With Tuesday’s matchup against the Badgers looming, Purdue can climb back in the top spot. The Boilermakers did tie the game at 63 after Jaden Ivey's free throw with 51.6 seconds left.
Tyson Walker may have cemented Michigan State basketball's NCAA tournament berth, canning a 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds left to beat Purdue.
"I just think our defensive effort, our energy that we brought from the beginning of the game and getting stops early on allowed us to get on in transition," said Hoggard, who had 11 points, six assists and three rebounds as well as a steal and a block. Edey made it a 7-0 run with the first bucket after halftime, another post-up pin of Marble on the block. And we needed to win a game the way we won the game," Izzo said. Hoggard delivered a perfect look-away alley-oop to Brown for a dunk and Mady Sissoko added some energy on the boards and floorboards diving for a loose ball. And I know I gotta bring energy, I gotta be the guy each and every night to encourage my guys and lead. They also got to the free-throw line often and went 10-for-13, while MSU was just 1-for-3. But the Boilermakers closed the half with the final five points, the first two coming on an Edey alley-oop. Williams tied it with a layup with 31.2 seconds left, on which Hoggard appeared to hurt his left leg and needed to come out of the game. Hoggard and Walker had MSU out and running in transition for the first time since scoring 28 fastbreak points against Michigan on Jan. 29. "We needed to win a game. "That shot right there, I've always done that move since I was a freshman in high school," said Walker, who finished with eight points and four assists. The Spartans led by 11 with 9:33 to play on Christie’s layup as part of an 11-2 run.

Wisconsin rallied from a 22-point deficit to win the first meeting two weeks ago, and Purdue nearly returned the favor Sunday. Terry’s final attempt was blocked, sending Purdue to the Big Ten tournament on a two-game losing streak. “We’re the underdog,” Ellis said. Gearlds has brought a renewed energy back into the program with her demeanor and coaching style and Hardin simply wants to be involved in what's happening. That’s what happened last game and we didn't do the best in adapting to that.” “I’ve got to be better.” “They can go backdoor and be open but if they can’t pass the ball, there’s no bucket. I don’t have a future in basketball after this because I’m going to medical school. Hardin wouldn’t have to guard the opposing team’s power forwards and centers each game since this year’s team lacks an inside presence at both ends of the floor. “I really believe in what they’re building here, and I knew I wanted to be a part of it for another year. This would be good news for coach Katie Gearlds, whose team won 16 regular-season victories in her first year and with the Big Ten tournament starting this week. “I want to keep that open.”
The Purdue Boilermakers have an opportunity to keep up in the Big Ten basketball championship race against Wisconsin.
Why is Wisconsin above Purdue in the standings? No. 9 (USA TODAY ranking) Purdue (24-5, 13-5) is coming off a deflating loss to Michigan State on a 3-pointer in the closing seconds. No. 10 Wisconsin (23-5, 14-4) leads the conference race and has won four games in a row.

Brooke Schramek blocked the Boilermakers' last second shot to secure the one point win.
Following a Purdue timeout, Brooke Schramek came up with the play of the night. Krystyna Ellew hit a jumper with 1:25 remaining to give the Badgers a 61-57 lead. Purdue opened the fourth quarter on a 8-0 run to tie the game at 48. After their once 14 point lead was cut to two, UW finished the third quarter on a 6-0 run, extending the lead back to eight points. The Boilermakers were able to cut the UW lead to as few as seven with 3:24 to play in the half. Purdue responded with a 14-2 run to bring the Boilermakers within one possession.
