No. 1 Gonzaga's 17-game winning streak came to an end against WCC rival Saint Mary's. The Bulldogs were the seventh top-10 team to lose Saturday.
No. 7 Purdue (loss to Michigan State) and No. 9 Texas Tech (loss to TCU) rounded out a whirlwind day of upsets in the sport. Gonzaga is still well-positioned to garner the top overall seed on Selection Sunday, although unlike last year the 'Zags have lost several times. When you’re the most aggressive team and most physical team, probably nine times out of 10 you’re going to win.” It’s been something hard to get and we finally got it. Gonzaga, the clear-cut favorite to garner the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament on Selection Sunday, hadn't lost since early December, ripping off 17 straight wins before Saturday's setback. Matthias Tass (13 points), Alex Ducas and Logan Johnson (each with 10 points) joined Kuhse in double figures.
Tommy Kuhse had 14 points and six rebounds for No. 23 Saint Mary's, which beat No. 1 Gonzaga 67-57 on Saturday night to prevent the Bulldogs from completing ...

The top six teams in the AP poll all lost Saturday, and seven of the top nine; only No. 7 Duke won, rolling past Syracuse, 97-72.
Gonzaga entered Saturday's loss as the projected No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, according to CBS Sports Bracketology Expert Jerry Palm. Even with ...
Gonzaga's loss capped a historic day in college basketball that saw each of the top six teams in the AP Top 25 lose. All the attrition at the top gave Gonzaga a little bit of padding for the loss. With more than a week until they open play in the WCC Tournament, the Zags can get back to the drawing board. St. Mary's outscored Gonzaga 40-28 in the paint and limited the Zags to just 36.7% shooting. That sets up a potential rematch in the WCC Tournament title game on March 8. Nembhard and Bolton bring veteran savvy, but they will need to be better than they were Saturday. Freshman guards Nolan Hickman and Hunter Sallis played just six and five minutes, respectively, against St. Mary's. If Gonzaga was going to drop a game in WCC play, this was the most respectable place to do it, and perhaps the timing can work to Gonzaga's advantage. Rasir Bolton led the way for Gonzaga with 16 points and Andrew Nembhard contributed 15 -- but on 18 shots. After scoring 25 points on 11 of 16 shooting in Gonzaga's 74-58 win over the Gaels on Feb. 12, Zags' star forward Drew Timme struggled on Saturday. His 2 for 10 shooting night marked the second-worst shooting performance of his career. Saint Mary's entered as a projected No. 6 seed and could be in line for a bump after picking up a fourth Quad 1 win. But the Gaels (24-6, 12-3) proved tougher for the Zags in a road rematch than they were in a 74-58 Gonzaga home win on Feb. 12. Tommy Kuhse scored 14 points and Matthias Tass added 13 to lead the way as the Gaels snapped Gonzaga's 17-game winning streak.
It isn't March yet, but Saturday's college basketball slate sure had a maddening feel to it. In a day filled with upsets, five top-10 teams fell on the ...
A quick 3-pointer and layup in a minute’s time from the former Cyclone marked the first signs of life all night from the offense. Flustered, Timme failed to find any sort of rhythm against the hybrid look, as he missed his first seven shots from the floor before finishing with a season-low six points. Despite trailing for double digits throughout, a spurt from Rasir Bolton gave the Zags hope in the second half before ultimately falling short. The program will still be dancing in a few weeks regardless, with an opportunity to boost its current standing with a strong showing in the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed. If there’s any team in the WCC that isn’t afraid of Gonzaga’s playstyle, it’s Randy Bennett’s band of experienced and savvy bunch. After enduring the toughest true road stretch of the season, the Zags (24-3, 13-1 WCC) still holds all the cards heading into the conference tournament as the nation’s top team.
Ugh. Gonzaga didn't deserve to win this one. The Zags failed to show up while the Gaels and their crowd were in the mood for an upset right from the opening ...
It seemed like they were not quite recovered from their initial shock of how poorly they were playing in the first half, and were missing that killer mentality in the second half to make the comeback happen. It was disappointing to see the Zags make so many poor decisions in the first half of the game. In these types of match ups when you’re playing an opponent that is so familiar with what you do that they know exactly what type of passes you are looking to make in any situation, you cannot be lackadaisical in any aspect of your game. That is basic, fundamental stuff, and just indicative of the collective brain fart the squad was experiencing during the first half. We saw it happen in the first game in Spokane too. Hopefully it gets the Zags in the right mindset now that they’re playing elimination basketball the rest of the way, though I hate the talking point that late season losses can be good for the Zags.
Gonzaga's Chet Holmgren walked through the lobby of the team hotel Saturday morning carrying a basketball and a pair of basketball shoes. He signed in at a counter to use the hotel's expansive workout facilities, which included basketball courts, ...
