Zion Williamson situation symbolizes growing problem for the NBA (Pelican Debrief)

Zion Williamson has not played a game for the New Orleans Pelicans this year, yet still wields a lot of leverage, which is a growing problem for the NBA.

Player empowerment is great but there also has to be consideration given to the fans, who ultimately fund this whole league and are sick of seeing star players flee for the same five destinations. Zion Williamson has played 85 games in the NBA and missed 117 and counting so far. He hasn’t won a playoff game, or even been to the playoffs, has not stepped up as a leader of his team and has disappeared completely this season, leaving fans and the media to fill in the silence with speculation, which hasn’t helped the situation.

Brian Windhorst: Pelicans and Zion Williamson are 'distant ... (TalkBasket.net)

One of the biggest young stars of the NBA, Zion Williamson, has been at the center of attention for the last couple of days.

This is an awesome piece of video, I loved it at the time I still remember it today. He still thinks that New Orleans wants to keep the player though. It started with his new teammate CJ McCollum revealing that he had not talked to the 21-year-old forward since joining the Pelicans.

Opinion: This Team Should Trade For Zion Williamson (Sports Illustrated)

Zion Williamson has yet to play in a game this season for the New Orleans Pelicans due to injury, and while he is in his third season in the NBA he has only played in 85 games so far. When he has played he has proven to live ...

At the end of the day, the Pelicans probably want to keep Williamson for his entire career, but in the NBA a trade is always possible for any player. Zion Williamson has yet to play in a game this season for the New Orleans Pelicans due to injury, and while he is in his third season in the NBA he has only played in 85 games so far. If the Pelicans were to ever trade Williamson, they already have Brandon Ingram and C.J. McCollum, so some of the Knicks veterans could be a good fit in New Orleans

The New Orleans Pelicans appear to be done marketing Zion ... (Pelican Debrief)

The Zion Williamson drama continues for the New Orleans Pelicans, who no longer appear to be marketing their injured star to fans.

That seems like five years ago at this point, and also like a cruel joke to fans who shelled out big money for season tickets, partially because they wanted to see Zion. It’s easier to just leave him off the marketing materials and hope for the best, but I don’t think this is a sign that Zion is going to be traded or that his extension is in jeopardy. The drama with Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans never seems to end and has taken a weird turn in recent days.

“This is now another incident, another example, of that pattern of behavior [that suggests he wants out],” Redick said. You’re fully invested in your body, you’re fully invested in your work and you’re fully invested in your teammates. “The Pelicans yesterday sent out an email about season tickets for next year and guess whose name wasn’t in the email? “This is something I addressed with Zion in front of the team, okay?” Redick said. “This is a pattern of behavior with Zion that we are seeing again and again. but as a teammate, there is a pattern of behavior. As a fully invested individual in New Orleans, there’s a pattern of behavior. This just shows a complete lack of investment in your team, in the organization, in the city. I was his teammate; I can describe him as a detached teammate, that is an accurate statement. JJ Redick hasn’t been a full-time NBA analyst for long, yet he has already emerged as one of the most insightful broadcasters in the industry. I get that he’s hurt and away from the team, but you just traded for one of the 50 best players in the league — a guy that’s supposed to be paired with you. There’s a general decorum of behavior that you should apply as a teammate,” Redick said on First Take. “Look, I wasn’t the best player on any team that I was on…

These are two teams that play in similar ways. As discussed, Phoenix will need to score consistently and efficiently from the mid-range to counter how many three-pointers the Warriors will get up, and Paul is at the center of that. Of every player in the NBA this season averaging at least 20 minutes per appearance, only two – LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar Derozan – score a higher percentage of their points from the mid-range than Paul. Golden State also attempts the second-highest percentage of three-pointers – nearly 46 per cent of all of their shots come from long range – while Phoenix is way down at 27th in the league, taking 65 per cent of their shots from two-point range. Both teams are bottom-five in percentage of their total points coming from the free throw line, both teams are top-five in percentage of two-point baskets coming from assists, and both are top-three in fewest blocked shots. While these are undoubtedly two of the premier teams in the West, the real story is about how the Suns have been in a class of their own this season, eight games clear of the second-best record in the league.

Zion Williamson Situation Should Be Learning Experience For NBA (Forbes)

This season marks the third of Williamson's career, and up until now, the 21-year-old has played in just 85 games for the Pelicans, a frighteningly low number ...

Make them public and normalize the fact that players have a vesting interest in where they end up. At the end of the day, the NBA is a business that operates under the entertainment umbrella. If players and teams wish to keep earning more money than they know what to do with, they have to make sure they're satisfying the need of the consumer. If a team picks an unwilling player anyway, it's on them for not reading the room or not doing their research. On the surface, there's logic in the concept of a long-term partnership. The league is serving teams, meaning they of course want to give these teams the power to hang onto players for as long as possible. In the end, it should help save franchises time. The optics of the league being the big white whale, with players reduced to the role of Captain Ahab, are at best flawed and at worst an institutional failure to even out power balances. They're the best players on the face of the planet, and the league needs them just as much as they need it. As if his physical woes weren't bad enough, there's also the matter of Williamson's dedication to the team, or lack thereof. Coming into this year, the 6'6 Williamson reportedly checked in at 330 pounds, which is a concerning number for a multitude of reasons, chief among them being his future health. Given that they’re projected to miss the playoffs, it’s fair to say the situation is quickly becoming tenuous.
