Why George Washington has two birthdays — and neither falls on Presidents’ Day (unknown)

Was the first president born on Feb. 11, 1731, or Feb. 22, 1732? Both.

(Readers familiar with Norouz: Yes!) But when England and its colonies switched, they also moved New Year’s Day to Jan. 1 (except for Scotland, which was already using Jan. 1 for the new year). The calendar year 1751 was only about nine months long, going from March 25 to Dec. 31, meaning anyone born between Jan. 1 and March 25 had to start using a different birthday and a different birth year, or continue using an inaccurate birthday and birth year — even though the number of days they had spent on this spinning rock was unchanged. That’s what Washington and Benjamin Franklin — the tech geeks of their day — did, though most people stuck with their Julian birthdays and griped about having 11 days “stolen” from them. Tobias Lear alluded to this idea in 1790, when replying to a letter from someone who wished to know the president’s birthday. Pope Gregory XIII introduced his new calendar in 1582, and most Catholic countries followed suit. The Gregorian calendar, the one we have now, was designed to fix this. There’s no record of what he did between Sept. 3 and Sept. 13, because in 1752, those days did not exist. Leap days are added every four years, except in a century year that cannot be divided by 400. In the Gregorian calendar, the rules of adding a leap day are a little more complicated than how we usually think of it. Warning: The following paragraphs contain a little math. On Feb. 11, 1750, a young land surveyor named George Washington completed his 19th trip around the sun. New Year’s Day, the day the calendar year changed, used to happen in late March, as it was more associated with spring. He went to bed on Wednesday, Sept. 2, and woke up on Thursday, Sept. 14.

Though other institutions such as state and local governments and private businesses may use other names, it is our policy to always refer to holidays by the names designated in the law.” In 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Actto give workers more three-day weekends—the law refers to “Washington’s Birthday, the third Monday in February.” - President’s Day always falls betweenGeorge Washington’sbirthday (Feb. 22) and Abraham Lincoln’sbirthday (Feb. 12). It’s Time To Cancel Presidents Day (unknown)

By elevating myth over reality, the holiday does a disservice to history. An honor cordon is in place at the Lincoln Memorial in ...

From the right it seems obvious that we don’t need to be honoring the aggrandizement of Washington-based politicians. From the left it seems obvious that we don’t need a holiday honoring 46 presidents, all of them men. This, combined with the wishes of car dealers and mattress sellers, led to people transforming the holiday on the third Monday in February as an all-purpose “Presidents Day.” The name suggests we honor Lincoln and Washington no less than Richard Nixon or Warren G. Harding or Donald Trump. One hastens to add: The aim is not to “cancel,” in the contemporary sense of the word, any particular president. “Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God, and each invokes His aid against the other. There are two conceptions of what it means to learn history — always in tension with each other, and sometimes in flat contradiction. A month before the end of the Civil War, and his own assassination, Lincoln noted how neither North nor South had envisioned a conflict so violent: One kind of history aims to create national heroes. So while one style of history studies the past in search of moral clarity, the other is attuned to moral ambiguity. Is there a way that the center can find its voice in arguments about the presidency? Long-forgotten lives, like the dozens of people killed in the Tulsa race massacre, are being vaulted into public consciousness. Historical reappraisal has been especially vigorous in a particular arena: the U.S. presidency.
