Obi Toppin wins lackluster dunk contest; Karl-Anthony Towns triumphs in 3-point contest (unknown)

Obi Toppin, who went to college in Ohio at the University of Dayton, easily captured the AT&T Slam Dunk Contest in Cleveland.

The two teams with the combined highest scores after the first three rounds duked it in a final round of… The skills challenge operated under a new format with three teams of three players competing in shooting, passing, and relay contests. Toppin’s best dunk was his last, when he moved the ball through his legs, banged it off the glass and slammed it home with his right hand for a 47 from the judges. Towns is the first post player to win the 3-point contest since former Timberwolves star and current Cleveland Cavalier Kevin Love did it in 2012. The son of former Knick Greg Anthony also switched out of his own Magic jersey and into his dad’s old Knicks jersey. Big man Karl-Anthony Towns made some history in capturing the 3-point contest and a trio of hometown Cavaliers won the revamped skills challenge.

Karl-Anthony Towns, Obi Toppin win big (unknown)

Here are the highlights from the Skills Challenge, 3-Point and Slam Dunk Contest.

He is the third Knick to win the Slam Dunk Contest. The two players with the highest combined scores for their first two dunks — Toscano-Anderson and Toppin — advanced to the final round, where they attempted a second pair of dunks. The second round was all about passing. Two "MTN DEW Zones" that held one green ball worth three points sat six feet behind the 3-point line. The 20-year-old Green was up first for the second round of dunks, coming away with a score of 45. The three highest-scoring players from the first round — Kennard, Towns and Young — advanced to the second and final round, where big man Towns was crowned the winner with a record-setting high score of 29.

He wadded up a bunch of cash and put it in the pocket of his jacket, took the jacket off, laid it over the guy and went on his way. He helped develop those players into Hall of Famers, who then in turn helped Pop grow into a coach who has now won more games than any other coach in history. He was a central part of the Spurs intelligence that drafted Kawhi Leonard in the middle of the first round, Tony Parker at the end of the first round and Manu Ginobili at the end of the second round. When I hired him, I met him for the first time when he flew in to get interviewed. The first thing he did when he got to Golden State, he set up a summer league for young kids to play in and stay off the streets. I was going through a separation at the time ... my boys were living in Colorado with their mom, I was [in San Antonio]. I will never forget, they were out here for about a week and my sister was about to take them back because we were about to go on the road. On Tuesday, ESPN published a great series of Pop stories told by some of the players and coaches closest to him over the years, and the central theme of so many of them was how giant and sincere this guy's heart is. I called Pop [and said,] 'I am going to be there, I am at the airport, my kids are having a tough time getting on the plane to go back. We love to romanticize the greatest coaches as these mad scientists scribbling genius on a napkin, but if your players don't play hard for you, if they don't trust you, if they don't care about you, you can draw up plays like the "Good Will Hunting" guy banging around on the MIT chalkboards and it won't matter. If you are one of the many people who believe Gregg Popovich is the greatest coach in NBA history, you can add another bullet point to your argument. Throughout the years, Popovich has always deflected credit in the direction of those around him, players and coaches, downplaying one of the most decorated coaching resumes in all of sports. The NBA just named Steve Kerr one of the 15 greatest coaches in history.

Cavs trio shines in All-Star skills challenge (unknown)

NBA All-Star 2022 continues in Cleveland with one of basketball's most exiting nights.

The three players with the highest scores will go to the final round. The two teams with the most points after three rounds will move to the final to determine a winner. That meant the Rooks advanced to the finals, while the Cavs and brothers had to face in a tie breaker. The three teams of three will participate in a four-round competition, which tests shooting, passing and dribbling. Topping went off the backboard, under the leg and into the hoop to take him to the finals with Toscano-Anderson. The Cavs won the shooting part to get 100 challenge points.

Obi Toppin wins Dunk Contest; Towns captures 3-point crown (unknown)

NBA All-Star Saturday Night results, takeaways: Obi Toppin wins Dunk Contest; Towns take 3-point Contest crown · 1. Karl-Anthony Towns breaks record in 3-point Contest · 2. The dunk contest just isn't what it used to be · 3. The NBA should have a 1-on-1 ...

The NBA can hype up the matchups leading up to the event, and just let the trash talking and competitiveness ensue. But perhaps looking outside of just NBA players and bringing in other guys who are considered professional dunkers who have thrown down some truly jaw-dropping dunks would bring some interest back into the event. It seems like every year we watch the dunk contest we get ourselves psyched up for the event, only to be immediately let down within the first two minutes after the first contestant misses three or four attempts in a row. The win Saturday night was a cool moment for Towns, who has been quietly leading a Timberwolves team that looks like they're starting to figure things out after several years of toiling away at the bottom of the Western Conference. Ending the night, as always, was the Slam Dunk Contest, which featured Cole Anthony, Juan Toscano-Anderson, Obi Toppin and Jalen Green showcasing their skills and athleticism for the top honor. The 3-Point Contest followed and included eight participants -- Luke Kennard, Patty Mills, Fred VanVleet, Trae Young, Zach LaVine, Desmond Bane, CJ McCollum and Karl-Anthony Towns -- facing off for this year's shooting crown.
