13 million people from Oklahoma to Maine under winter storm warning from 'dynamic' system (unknown)

A powerful storm threatened to dump snow, spark flooding and whip up tornadoes across much of the Midwest, South and Northeast on Thursday.

Damaging winds and hail could also form, the Weather Service said. Meanwhile, heavy rains in the warmer areas of the storm are also expected, dumping between 1 to 2 inches from the mid-Mississippi Valley to the Great Lakes, the Weather Service said. In northern Indiana, southern Michigan and far-northwest Ohio on Thursday evening, snow could fall at a rate of 2 inches per hour, the Weather Service said. The Weather Service said the storm was expected to bring a "quick-hitting burst of snow" across affected areas from Thursday morning into Friday. The storm could bring up to half a foot to a foot of snow in the narrow stretch from the south-central Plains to the Great Lakes, the Weather Service said. A swath of 1,500 miles from western Oklahoma to northern Maine was under some form of winter weather alert, with more 13 million people under a winter storm warning, the National Weather Service said.

Winter Storm Warning Issued for Parts of Chicago Area Thursday Ahead of Snow, Ice (unknown)

Wednesday and Thursday are shaping up to be wild weather days across the Chicago area, with an unknown combination of rain, ice and snow potentially causing ...

The latter part of the storm is where the biggest uncertainty still remains. That rain could continue to fall through Thursday morning, but it could depend on how quickly temperatures begin to drop. That rain, along with the warm temperatures, could cause ice jams to break up, leading to even more flooding concerns in the coming days. The system is expected to move rapidly into the area from the Great Plains on Wednesday, but the track that it is going to take will ultimately determine how quickly the precipitation changes from rain to snow, and then how much snow could potentially fall in parts of the Chicago area. In the other scenario, the storm could veer more to the south, primarily impacting central Illinois and Indiana. The far southern suburbs in Kankakee County, along with parts of northwest Indiana, could also be impacted by this storm, which could drop plenty of rain and snow on the region before moving out. Weather officials warned small tree limbs could be blown down and power outages are expected.
