Unlocking this Horizon Forbidden West trophy also plants a real-life ... (Polygon)

Horizon Forbidden West launches on Feb. 18, and Sony has partnered with Arbor Day Foundation to plant trees when players unlock a specific trophy.

The game’s themes heavily touch on the subject of climate degradation and ecosystem balance. As part of an initiative in line with the game’s themes, Sony has partnered with Arbor Day Foundation to plant a tree for every unlock of the “Reached the Daunt” trophy. The 30,000-acre Sheep Fire Private Lands, in California, has suffered burn damage — reforesting will help support grey wolves.

The time I've spent with Horizon Forbidden West has been an absolute blast. Game Review. Review Platform: Sony PlayStation 5. Genre: Action RPG ...

This is the kind of game that you ideally want to play in 60FPS, and with a few rare exceptions, I almost never noticed subpar visuals while I was out and about. Structures — or even just parts of structures — occasionally appear out of nowhere when you get close, and every now and then the screen goes black for a second as the game loads while you move through the world. Combined with the new expanded climbing system — you can’t climb everything, but you have a lot more freedom to clamber up surfaces however you choose — Aloy has a lot of options when she needs to reach the top of a cliff or mountain. Add in great performances by the main cast and much more cinematic camera work overall, and Forbidden West is a real looker of a game both in and out of cutscenes. Motion and facial capture are used much more extensively throughout the game, and the result is that characters animate and emote in a much more lifelike manner. I’ve lost track of how many gorgeous pieces of music I’ve heard while roaming the wilds, and combat themes sound much improved compared to Zero Dawn. Ambient noises and sound effects are also top notch, and I appreciate that the game gives some granular control in this area, as explosions can be quite bombastic. As you level up and complete quests, you gain skill points that can be used in any of Horizon Forbidden West’s six skill trees. Skills and modification slots on armor are especially interesting because they can also improve the skills you unlock in your skill trees. One of the other most improved aspects of Horizon Forbidden West is also the one that will likely be most immediately obvious to players: the visuals. There are still a few duds here and there, but I often found myself thoroughly distracted from whatever main quest I was supposed to be working on thanks to all the secondary content in the game. Her personal journey in the first game was about learning who she is and where she comes from, and in Horizon Forbidden West, it’s about learning to share the burden placed upon her by virtue of her birth. After spending so much of her life as an outcast in one form or another, it’s hard for Aloy to let other people in, but getting to know her companions once she does is a real treat, and the process serves as the emotional core of the game.

Lego's latest video game collaboration is a fantastic looking Horizon ... (The Verge)

Lego notes that it created a new, custom headpiece for Aloy that includes her Focus accessory, in addition to creating a Lego version of her spear (sadly, there doesn’t seem to be a bow included.) Horizon’s multi-layered, armor-covered robots translate remarkably well into Lego, which makes sense, given the game’s modular approach to design that encourages players to dismantle their robot foes piece by piece in combat. Lego is teaming up with Guerrilla Games on a Horizon Forbidden West set, which transforms the overgrown wildernesses and robotic dinosaurs of the games into a new, Lego form.

Horizon Forbidden West PS5 Upgrade Criticized by Lawyer (Game Rant)

Hoeg Law attorney Richard Hoeg criticizes Horizon Forbidden West's PS5 upgrade practices, as currently displayed and marketed by Sony.

Although he suspects some difficulty may tie into licenses across the PS4 and PS5 generation, the easiest solution, he suggests, would be to make the PS5 version the same price as its PS4 counterpoint. For example, on the PlayStation Store, the main pre-order button is for the $69.99 PS5/PS4 version, with it being later mentioned at $59.99. Hoeg describes Horizon Forbidden West’s pre-order options as Sony “offering a PS4 version with a ‘free’ PS5 upgrade for $60 and a PS5 version with a PS4 copy included for $70. Same package. Sony rectified this situation by saying the upgrade would be free, but it would be the last free upgrade for any upcoming PS5 games.

This New Game Is So Good, It's Worth Buying a Whole System Just ... (Slate Magazine)

The premise of the 2017 video game Horizon: Zero Dawn might sound a little silly to the uninitiated: It's the story of a teenage girl Aloy, an outcast with ...

Early on in Forbidden West, as Aloy explores a ruin looking for a copy of that terraforming AI, the game reminds you of a minor detail from Zero Dawn. Long ago, we learned in that game, a group of old-world tech billionaires attempted to escape the dying Earth for a new world, only to have their ship explode on the way. If Horizon Zero Dawn was a game about Mother Earth, then Horizon Forbidden West is a game about Father Time. It’s not concerned with uncovering the hidden origins of the world, but with living through the cyclical nature of human conflict, and how running away from one’s problems dooms us to repeat them. It’s a reminder that though the hope of the American West may seem infinite, it too is bound by geography and the vastness of the Pacific. Our world has its limits too, and if you run west long enough, far from escape, you’ll be drowned by the current. Playing the game on PS5, this attention to detail extends to every part of Forbidden West. It’s hard to overstate how tremendous every facet of this game looks. For Aloy and the companions that join her throughout her journey, their concerns are focused on how to survive in an abandoned world mired in degradation and flux. It assumes a certain amount of familiarity with Zero Dawn’s lore and gameplay, and though it reintroduces many of its big ideas and characters, there are aspects of both the story and gameplay that you’ll miss without some familiarity with the previous game. Out for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on February 18, it picks up just a few months after the end of Zero Dawn: As a blight spreads across the land, Aloy seeks a backup copy of the massive terraforming AI known as Gaia to help restore the ecosystem to balance. I was also beset by occasional glitches while playing my pre-launch copy of the game, both minor graphical problems and more significant game-breaking bugs—like when I was fully locked out of fast-traveling to previous locations. The tribes that populate the West feel apiece with the world. The premise of the 2017 video game Horizon: Zero Dawn might sound a little silly to the uninitiated: It’s the story of a teenage girl Aloy, an outcast with no parents in a post-apocalyptic world filled with giant robotic dinosaurs known as “machines,” which are terrorizing the tribal populace. While the sound design is strong (I especially love the snap of Aloy’s bow being pulled back), the music itself is the weakest element of the game’s aesthetic package. All prices were up to date at the time of publication.

Horizon Forbidden West Reviews Say It's Really Good (And Really ... (Kotaku)

The latest PS5 sci-fi open-world RPG from Guerrilla Games has critics falling in love with Aloy more, even if the game isn't too original.

In a lot of ways, Forbidden West is pretty much the same as Zero Dawn, but it follows the common sequel ethos of “more and bigger,” and a lot of the systems have been improved and expanded. I didn’t much care for Aloy, the main character of Horizon Forbidden West. I think she’s the least interesting person in the cast of characters who surround her, and her serious-yet-aloof nature doesn’t really endear her to me. Beyond that, the sense is of a game where Guerrilla has cobbled together RPG building blocks often without making them work within the context of its own game, and in some cases actively worsening Horizon Forbidden West as a result. Mixing and matching to make sure you have all of the different types of elemental damage you need on your weapon wheel is key; the next step is being skilled enough to hit your fast-moving targets. Forbidden West picks up six months after the events of Zero Dawn. Aloy’s discoveries have only brought more questions and dangers her way, forcing her to head west for answers. With a few returning characters and plot tie-ins from the first game, Forbidden West isn’t ideal for newcomers who want to embrace the narrative.

Horizon Forbidden West plays just fine on a PS4 (The Verge)

Horizon Forbidden West launches on February 18th on both the PS4 and PS5, and it runs well on both PlayStation consoles.

Last month, Sony released the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, which bundled two PS4 games — the excellent Uncharted 4 and the even-better spinoff The Lost Legacy — for its new console. It should also be noted that both Forbidden West and its predecessor were built using the same engine, which was also used for games like Death Stranding. The current generation of consoles, ushered in when the PS5 and Xbox Series X debuted in 2020, has been a messy one in many ways. Like many games on the platform, Horizon Forbidden West has two graphics options: one that favors resolution, another that offers a higher frame rate. Really, on the PS4, Forbidden West looks and feels a lot like its predecessor. The consoles themselves have been hard to find, and — with the ballooning costs of game development — few publishers have been willing to go all in with fully exclusive titles.

It’s hard to get sick of shooting those dinos. After playing for nearly 20 hours, I feel comfortable saying that the game is fantastic. It’s difficult to imagine, but it’s true: If video games had never been invented, we might have never known the joy of pulling back the string of a bow, slowing down time and shooting an arrow right into the glowing skull of a robot dinosaur.
